Just a quick story here:

So today I was driving from Massachusetts back to my house in NJ.
I was driving on the Merritt Parkway somewhere around exit 48 (Trumbull, CT) and my GPS said I had 100 miles to go before reaching home.
And my mind just went "Holy ____%t, this is how far Nick was going to run in his NJ ultra". I still had close to a 2 hour drive and Nick was going to accomplish this distance on foot in 24 hrs. It honestly blew my mind.

When you measure from landmark to landmark, instead of just saying "8 miles" it really puts things in perspective

Yeah, that really is mind-blowing for 100 miles. I remember driving from NY to Massachusetts when I was training for the NYC marathon, and when we arrived I thought to myself, "Wow, the length of time I was just sitting in that car driving will be about the length of time I will be running on foot soon."
Puts it into perspective.

I like being able to say, "I run half marathons to warm up and full marathons just about every day to train for my races..." :D

The 100 miles doesn't phase me because I know I can run it. 200 milers are a little intimidating though.

It really does kinda blow my mind.

If it was run 5 miles then complete an obstacle course, then another 5 miles and swim for distance, then another 5 miles and do some climbing, 5 miles and rowing, etc....I would love it!

But 100 miles of nothing but running?

I honestly can't even imagine it.

The NJ 100 back in March was fun, and a really flat course. I can't wait for the 2012 race.
My 50 miler solo-ultra is coming up August 13th, Manasquan to Sandy Hook (Jersey) and back, so if you're around (Coryna, Dave, Jill...) come out and run a cuple of miles wih me...and bring water!

I'll be there! And what do you need water for...just take a leap in the Atlantic. :animwink:

My commute to work is 25 miles. I couldn't imagine running to work every day. But I signed up for the January full. I'm a bit nervous.

You wouldn't be human if you weren't nervous before your first full! Preparation and planning are your friends.

These distances are all relative; the marathon doesn't phase me at all anymore, but Jill is right when she says prep and planning are key. Don't overtrain, but certainly over-prepare.

That being said about "distances being relative," I'm sure Badwater, UTMB, and Marathon de Sables runners skoff at my 50 and 100 milers. Though, the ultrarunner community is much more laid back and comforting from what I've experienced, so skoffing is probably left to the jerks. No one should ever put down someone else's goals or achievements (though I tend to joke, only to bust chops :D). 5k or 200 milers; at least we are off our a___s and moving. Cheers.

When is your next 100 mile ultra? The March one, your last 100 mile race, is that the one you had to stop at 50 miles? Sorry Nick, Im lucky to recall what I did yesterday right now.

When is the 200 Ultra?

My dad always said if you arent a little bit nervous, there is something wrong with you.

I was over prepared for my Full. I was ready in every aspect, but since all things running can be a little unpredictable at times, I thought of that scene in Days of Thunder. At the end of the movie, Robert Duvall looks at "Cole Trickle" and says, "You didn't know how this was going to turn out." That is what I felt all morning. Next thing you know, 1 mile to go.

Hey buddy! I'll FB you later to catch up. Yeah, every ultrrunner has a DNF somewhere...damn LCL. I have a brace permanently attached to my knee now! I'll just give you a list of what's to come:

August 13th: Irascible ______________ Ultra, 50 mile solo, unaided. I even had a beer bottle belt buckle engraved for the occasion!

September: Brielle 10k (HILLS like crazy...I love hills).

October: Possibly a NJ Trail Series ultra.

January: 2012 WDW Goofy Challenge.

March 2012: NJ 100 mile Ultra (trying to quality for the 2013 HURT 100 mile in Hawaii, 2013, as the wife and I will be there for our 5 year anniversary).

May 2012: McNaughton 150 miler or 200 miler. Not sure, but we'll see how I'm doing after the NJ 100.

That's all she wrote for now. I hope you and Sam are doing well, and my best to Rivers!

Ahhhh yes. That is right about the August 13th. I have that on FB. See the "What did you do" thread for why im so confused today.

Im going to do a 10K trail run in September. That should be fun. Mostly single track in the hills of Chehea State Park and another 2 weeks later in Oak Mountain State park. I love hills too. *wink* Love them. Just the uphill part. LOL
