Next D23 Expo in August 2011

Only 3 days next time. That's too bad. I really enjoyed having 4 days for the first expo. And even then I didn't have time to see everything that was there. I wonder if this means that they'll be cutting back on a few things?

“The first D23 Expo surpassed all of our expectations, and our 2011 Expo is already shaping up to be a jaw-dropping, not-to-be missed showcase of the best and brightest Disney has to offer,” said Steven Clark, head of D23.

Can't wait! Though a bit disappointed they cut it back to 3 days.. I too wasn't able to get everything done - too many presentations going on at the same time! I'm sure it'll be still be great though. Also read on Twitter that they're holding a Destination D event this year. I wonder what that'll be about?

edit - Nvm, just saw this link. Looks like Destination D will alternate with the expo every year. This year's event will honor Disneyland's 55th!

sounds like a D23 Expo Lite, with "two full days of special presentations, panels, screenings and guest speakers that let fans meet and talk with key figures in Disneyland's history."

Good for them, "Darn it!" for us. :lookaroun

Come on out to SoCal for a visit! There's plenty to do, and a visit here in August will give you a nice break from Florida's summer heat, humidity, and rain.

You'll also be able to get a preview of The Little Mermaid attraction, which will be up and running at DCA by then.

As was hashed and rehashed endlessly in threads last year, it doesn't look like they'll ever be able to do a D23 Expo on WDW property without moving it to the Orlando Convention Center which is big enough to hold it all. But these smaller Destination D concepts, the first of which is at Disneyland this summer, could eventually show up at WDW at the larger convention facilities at the Contemporary or Saratoga Springs. Maybe a Destination D at WDW in 2012 at the end of FLE's first summer?

Something like this schedule might work over the next few years...

2010 - Destination D @ Disneyland for 55th Anniversary
2011 - D23 Expo @ Disneyland
2012 - Destination D @ WDW for FLE
2013 - D23 Expo @ Disneyland
2014 - Destination D @ WDW for ???
2015 - D23 Expo @ Disneyland

Would any non-socal-ers here consider going to the Destination D event? I think it sounds like a great time and looking forward to seeing what is on the agenda. I do think it sounds like it will be a little pricey. What would be the cap on price that you would pay to attend this?

Anyone outside of SoCal going to Destination D will need to be very familiar and interested in Disneyland, and have at least completed a Sophomore level class on Disneyland history. It looks to be a Disneyland geeks dream event.

But if you aren't fluent in Disneyland USA, and don't know your Bear Country from your Indian Village or your Flying Saucers from your Viewliner, then it might be a tad too scholarly for you.

I can't imagine the average WDW fan getting much out of this Destination D event.

It also looks like the Destination D event will have very limited space. Just read they only have space for 1,500 guests.. which is actually less than the D23 Anniversary Party at DL (2,000 guests at that event). gonna have to get those tickets early!

Eh. Unless you're one of the lucky few that gets a sneak peek at an upcoming movie or is able to find your way into one of the conferences (chances are you're going have to be in line HOURS prior to the convention doors opening to see any of that), you're not missing much. I went for 3 days last year and was bored out of my mind - and that's coming from a pretty big-time Disney fan.

Three days? I'd be bored too. I went for just one day. Walked up on that Friday and just paid for a single day ticket, and I had a blast. I skimmed a lot of the stuff in the exhibition hall (Disney Weddings, Baby Einstein, etc. and all sorts of bizarre little divisions of DisCo that I have no real interest in).

But my gosh, the Disney Archives exhibit up on the third floor, and the huge Parks & Resorts Pavilion in Hall B were worth the price of admission for me. Three days though, just spent in the Expo? I'd be bored to tears.

Please tell me you at least walked across the street to Disneyland, Disney's California Adventure and/or Downtown Disney for at least a break on some of those days.

I went three days as well and I wasn't bored :lookaroun Each day had different presentations/panels/etc - like the World of Color demo with World of Color. And I never waited more than an hour for each.. I had a great time.

Hehe. Well, the original plan was to go for a day, but we were given passes for all 4 days at the last minute by some friends who couldn't make it, so we figured we'd put them to use rather than let them go to waste. Everything was a-ok the first day, but there's only so much you can see that you haven't already seen when you're there for as many days I was. But to answer your question, I definitely spent a good chunk of time at the parks or DTD in between visits to D23. :)
