New Waterpark: Earthquake Lake Waterpark

Havn't posted here in a while, but had the idea to continue with Disney's waterpark theme and come up with Earthquake Lake Waterpark. I thought it would be a great park for The Disneyland Resort, but it could also work great at Walt Disney World.

The theme is based on a small town & neighboring national park which just happens to lie in the middle of a fault zone. The town has experienced many earthquakes throughout the decades all the way back to its gold mining days, but this was the big one turning the town into chaos and has left the nearby dam in dangerous shape. The quake resulted in underground water sources bursting into the old mine shafts leaving the area full of mudslides, waterfalls, and more.

So, there's a little backstory for you. It could use some work, but I trust that you get the general idea. Basically the park is built like a mountain valley with two peaks (Mount Schake & Raddle Ridge) on either side.

The middle of the park contains Aftershock Bay which is the parks wave pool. The waves are created at the oneset of aftershocks which take place every so often. The backdrop of the wavepool is a dam which has been damaged to the point that it could burst at any moment. Cracks spew water and the pressure behind the damn is very evident.

One of the family raft attractions Rictor Road Rapids is based on a 2 lane mountain highway full of curves that has turned into a fast paced water chute. The slide will be themed to a highway with double yellow line down the middle, guardrails for sides, and road signs along the way.

The children's area will and neighboring area will featuing town buildings with broken water pipes everywhere. Every so often the aftershocks in the area will dump the town's watertower full of water onto the kids below.

The Tremor River is the park's lazy river that travels around the majority of the park. It provides scenic trees through past boulders and pine trees. It also features the occasional waterfall. Of course, when the aftershocks hit the area, a portion of the lazy river turns in a torrent river with waves. The highlight of the lazy river is the long themed tunnel that it passes through which provides a similar experience to the earthquake scene in Big Thunder Mountain with shaking boulders and sound and lighting effects.

Other attractions at the park are your typical tube slides which have various earthquake, gold mine, and national park themes. Two tallest slides from the park sit at the damaged Ranger Station at the top of Mount Schake. One final attraction will be similar to a halfpipe water attraction called Mudslide Dive. It will obviously be themed to a mudslide...without the actual mud.

In all, the park will be relatively small due to space constraints at the Disneyland Resort. It could be placed in the ever famous strawberry fields there, but I think that it although it would be a tight squeeze that it just may work in the parking lot adjacent to Katella Ave. and the Paradise Pier Hotel. The parking lot would be replaced by a parking garage located elsewhere on the property that would also make up for the parking lost with the Carsland Expansion.

At the Walt Disney World Resort, it would go great with the Wilderness Lodge theme and would help fill the void that River Country left.

Comments, suggestions, and additional input on ideas are welcome. I have sketched a few drawings, but havn't had the chance the scan them. They arn't much anyways.

Thanks.

i like it, its got enough of the old and enough of the new to make it legit only thiing i might say is that for some reason there is an extremely consistant formula for waterparks it all revolves around a peak of some sort, i know water has to flow down and its the best way to achieve a great theme and disney has a long history with mountains but i think it would be cool to break the mould a little. i like the idea of the lazy river, how about paint the floor of it red, and when in the cave make the lighting red under the water with red lit spouts etc from the ceiling you can pull off a lava effect. and the bit about flooded mines is awesome, imagine slides through the mines, dark in places etc sounds wicked :D

Yeah, I agree about Disney Waterparks always having mountains, but it really does make sense, because Disney would rather hide the supports for all the water slides.

I guess with this idea, you could also fit it into a big city theme and use buildings and skyscrappers to mask the slide supports, but I would guess that big city is too realistic for folks. Disney is known for taking people out of reality while they visit their parks.

You have the beginnings of something really good here. Why don't you try to incorporate some of the newer water rides/slides that are being used in other water parks across the nation that aren't at Disney parks yet. WDI is all about technology and being the 1st, so why not come up with a new type of water slide that no one else has??? Right now you have some killer ideas, you just need to plus them. Create a better back story and work on your technology!!!

I see you're at PU, well done indeed. You should enter WDI's imaginations contest for college students with this idea. . .

Went to BSU, entered the contest with an idea of mine, won 1st place and have freelanced for WDI on and off for 2 years!!!

Cool! I want more! How 'bout a fast paced (jet propelled) ride that rushes around... a fallen water tower? Hmm.. need to think about that more. It'd be cool if you could see lava (red glowing cracks) in the slides. Keep up the great work!

P.S. terp79 - Hey! Never seen ya before! We always welcome members of the Disney family back (if you left. 'Cuz I never forget an Avvie, and I've never seen you before...hmm.). Well, glad to meet ya!

Not too sure that is an original idea though. I have read the exact same park name and attraction names mentioned before including on this board.

A quick search did not show any threads discussing Earthquake related waterpark ideas, so it must have been a while ago. There are posters coming and going all the time, so it's unusual to see ANY totally new discussions. ;)

Yeah, I did my research to see if anyone had attempted this idea, including WDI. Obviously, the closest has been Typhoon Lagoon where an earthquake, tidal wave, typhoon, and more? all took place at once. I even found that there is a real Earthquake Lake in Montana which goes along with a national park type feel and sleepy mountain town.

I'd love to submit this in, but I think my time to do so wouldn't work for me. I planned to do the Imaginations contest my senior year of college, but college keeps you busy. I never got around to doing it.

I am trying to also improve my backstory. I know what I want, I just don't know how to narrate it.
