The Disneyland Version of ToT occurs entirely in one shaft. There are 2 cars for each shaft. One car moves out and loads while the other one is going through the ride. Because of this there are 3 shafts.
The WDW version of ToT works with 4 loading shafts that contain the show elements and story scenes but once the cars reach the top of the load shafts, they move out of the shaft and merge with to form 2 horizontal track segments that contain a scene the Disneyland version does not contain. (the disneyland version however contains a mirror effect room with lightning and heat vision stuff) The WDW Exclusive scene is the 5th Dimension which has quite deteriorated since it opened. (a lot of the effects no longer work). But the WDW version is supposed to have a new scene replace the 5th dimension in 3 years.
For the drop, the WDW version is in a large mirror door with pixie dust effects. Once the car loads in, it waits a few seconds for the next car to leave the shaft before a lightning effect goes and the car goes through one of the 4 drop sequences.
The Disneyland version's drop sequences begin in the hallway with the passengers and unlike the WDW version there is a door instead of a window at the end of the halway. WDW, window breaks, guests go to next floor. The Disneyland version, the door drops as well as the car.
But there are many other things that differ the rides. One is the line. The Disneyland version's line occers on a stone plaza where switchbacks take up the whole area. The WDW version's line takes guests through a pathways around a dead garden with many turns. Infact, the WDW version is much more highly detailed in many ways. I would consider the WDW's ToT the perfect Disney Attraction.
But of course reports are saying that ToT at Disneyland has done nothing for CA, and well, I am not really surprised. Even at WDW, the line for ToT never seems to get past 5 minutes unless it is a week before or after a holiday. (Scary Christmas lines, scary 4th line, been to WDW at those times and it is scary, at least MK was open until either 12 or 1 on the 4th last year)
