A movie's success or failure always is always pined to the director. If the director has no passion for the subject, it will show.

And how do you know if a director has passion for the subject? I can't remember to many filmmakers giving interviews saying they don't like the subject of the film they were directing.

You don't, unless they have been vocal about it in interviews and such. We all know Kevin Feige is a huge star wars guy. He's talked about it a lot. Other than that, it is up to the person in charge to figure it out. And sometimes that's tuff when the person in charge seems to not have all that much knowledge of the franchise.
