Fortunately (?), that’s also when rates began to become insanely expensive,

Where’s the fun in paying gobs of cash to stay in a hotel with the same subdued, minimalist aesthetic found in any other upscale hotel?

If you choose to pay cash to stay at a DVC resort, the rates will be exorbitant. Even more than staying at one of the non DVC deluxe resorts.

And I think only the Gran Destino Tower has been a new non-DVC resort since AoA?

Since everyone can have their own opinion I’m neither attacking nor defending the design. I said way back that the room interiors were too “samey” colour wise for me, whilst still appreciative of the design features. I would have preferred more contrast. Same applies to this exterior design feature.

But ultimately it’s the point chart that will deter me from staying there, not the design of the building or rooms.

While this may be true, I was using as an example of the fact that I've just been to the place this is based on. And while the PCC may not be entirely accurate, the architecture is at least somewhat accurate. And my point is, at least in Oahu, the Island Tower would be perfectly fine.
You used it as a design reference. You didnt have to name the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Why would the Island Tower fit in perfectly fine? Is it because it reflects a unique vernacular style or because Oahu has been cluttered with the same sort of placeless contemporary design? Is highlighting vertical circulation a distinguishing feature of Polynesian design?

I stayed in the 3br grand villa at riviera and I think it is the nicest room in all WDW. Looks to me like poly Island Tower is going to be similar. Excellent interior and average exterior

The rooms are alittle too uncolored for me but if the lobby is beautiful I’d feel better about my upcoming stay. Problem is I wish I could get a glimpse beforehand so I can have the option of switching my booking out of there if I dont like the look. All comes down to the lobby and the feeling of being under 1 roof.

While I am no fan of the Riviera, I will agree, we also had the 3 br villa and it was huge and beautiful... It absolutely did not feel like a Disney hotel... and especially did not reflect "The Riviera" theme. It was a very nicely designed apartment. the view was nice, and it was nice to look out over the lake and the Skyliner...

I do think the rooms vs. lobby/architecture is an important distinction. The rooms in the newer projects are quite nice and I would argue more aligned with modern audience needs/wants. While the artwork is a little ChatGPT (in what's represented, not style), the finishes in the Riviera rooms are very nice. It's the resort itself, common areas and pools that really seem lacking for a deluxe (even DVC) Disney property. Island Tower seems the same.

Destino I actually don't mind, but that's because the unique theme was carried out so well in the lobby and rooftop - so it became it's own thing. Plus, Coronado (my personal favorite of the moderates before and after Destino) always felt like a convention hotel, so I find the current iteration to be a much better Swan and Dolphin or Marriott World Center than a typical Disney hotel.

Is The Baylake Tower common areas and pools deluxe and DVC represented. BayLake doesn't need an enormous lobby for it shares with The Contemporary. Can be said the same thing with The Villa Tower at Grand Floridian except it's little building lobby is very nice with the Penguin fountain and mimics the other resort buildings. BayLake if you were to enter from the lobby check in feels small like a dead end. The Riviera lobby was really shocking contrast to Gran Destino's enormous lobby high ceiling at first why the difference especially one is moderate other is deluxe. I wonder if it was under the same people that did Gran Destino Tower would they striked it up a bit more.

Location seems to appropriate itself as something considered to be Deluxe along with it attached to the Skyliner. Had the Skyliner not existed would Riviera be a Deluxe still or would it be a Moderate which I doubt it nor would exist there because really isn't anything of the location accessible to Epcot and Hollywood Studios prior to The Skyliner!

Sorry but your posts don't seem to leave any room for engagement. They are aggressively dismissive and disrespectful of different opinions.
The initial post to which you responded is in no way “disrespectful.”

Posters on these boards, myself included, offer opinions. You can agree, disagree, agree in part, elaborate - whatever you like.

Please, let’s talk about the thread topic.

So I just toured the island tower!

The building and facilities are ready, there’s just a bit of outdoor work remaining. Landscaping particularly facing the monorail side and then they are putting in the remaining pathway work under the tree like exit structure on the lagoon side.

It’s very, very nice. Still on the beige end of things, but there is a lot of aqua marine notes woven throughout. The lobby also has giant green plant cylindrical structures and the paddles for lack of a better term overhead do have some colour splashed into the characters.

Artwork is beautiful and understated; less Disney characters smattered around. Maybe they are hidden but it doesn’t jump out to me. The only real prominence is Moana elements that you’ll notice mostly on the feature wall when you approach that all the characters (sans Moana) are etched into it. Only the giant crab is really evident from the main level.

Really nice finishing. Everything is textured. Tiles in the lobby are pretty. There’s four conceptual artwork of Poly, including the classic original tower design on the second level. Pool deck is the most phoned in feature; whereas everything outside of the pool deck is textured or some of the pathway is styled after lava pocketed rock.

The water feature in the restaraunt is an infinity feature. So constantly flowing over. The restaurant is going to be super popular.

The pocket gardens are really, really nice and probably will have to stay limited to the Island Tower guests only until the end of time. I think people who don’t love the tower will like the pocket gardens. They feel the most original Poly with a lot of indoor plants and more colour. They’ve made a big deal of the views and begrudgingly they are amazing views. A lot of the less desirable infrastructure like the transit authority, Tron or roadways etc happens to be fortuitously blocked out by the barrier island and it’s basically just the castle well aligned. I mean there’s probably a reason the Wedding pavilion is where it is.

I don’t think anyone dug in will change their minds, but this is definitely not a resort where quality is inherently lacking. Nor is it sterile white. There’s no ambiguity which building you are in (unlike looking at the renovated Boulder, vero etc, that all kind of look the same with different soft good elements splashed in).

Sizewise, how does the lobby compare to the original poly? Hopefully not as small as Riviera’s.
