Rumor New Monorails Coming Soon?

I've been wondering about all the different ways they could utilize the AR technology, if it's actually coming. One possible thing I thought of is they could use the MagicBand personalization like on IASW and RnRC, and Tinker Bell spells out someone's name on the window in pixie dust, or it shows their name in fireworks over the castle, or whatever other random effect they decide to use. People might get freaked out as to how Disney knows their name, but I haven't heard anyone complain about IASW, so.

There's plenty of other things they could do with AR as well, but that was just an idea of mine.

For what it may be worth, we were on two different monorail trains last week and both were clean and odor free. There did seem to be an awful lot of rattling in the couplings between the cars though. I wonder how many miles the current fleet has on them?
I do hope the proceed with a new fleet though.

I just read an article that said they might use video technology for the windows. How cool would it be if they projected opening day of Epcot Center on the windows as you went around the park. Lets hope this rumor turns out to be true. The technology is way cool having experienced it at HP in Universal. https://www.orlandoweekly.com/Blogs...rails-might-include-augmented-reality-windows

Not the same. This would be augmented reality - meaning you see things inserted into the regular view out the window.

Actually augmented reality wouldn't work, just regular video would be the only real practical use. Perhaps maybe popups with facts or something. Placing things in the view outside while everyone has drastically different perspectives simply wouldn't work. I'm pretty sure this will never happen though anyways.

The monorail is having more problems than usual this week... I've seen a lot of complaints being sent to WDWToday on Twitter..

Reactive maintenance = people get mad

Proactive maintenance = people get mad

It's the same illogical response the public has to road construction projects and attraction refurbs. Inconvenience everyone else, just not me. I'm guilty of this thought process at times.

People get mad regardless of what is or isn't done in these instances so might as well just do what you think is right.

I don't see anyone getting mad when they cycle the extra ride vehicles out of attractions and take them to Central Shops for their full refurbishment. There's no impact to the operation and most people don't even know or realize it happens.

Depends on what they do. The IASW stuff is neat but I wouldn't consider it AR (augmented reality). The windows on the Monorail trains could work if you could see the outside as normal but then maybe Dumbo flies by but he'd have to react to the weather/conditions. He can't be fully lit at night or dry when it's wet outside.

If they did what they did in the HP train over at Universal, I think it could wreck the Monorail experience because part of the coolness is riding up on a beam in the air. If you take that away it may as well be an industrial people transport with a well themed interior (a moving show building).

The Hogwarts Express isn't even augmented reality, though. AR is taking the real-life environment and overlaying computer-generated objects onto it. HE is just a video screen, like most of Universal. If that's what they're considering to be "augmented reality", that's just sad.

That technology doesn't exist. There's no way it would be anything more than flat video on the windows while still allowing you to see outside. It can't be overlaid onto the outside world. So yeah the Hogwarts Express method is probably the only way to create anything realistic looking outside a window with multiple vantage points. The only way to use the screens in an augmented reality way would be to make it appear as though things where happening on or near the window.

Lot's of different terms & usages for AR. AR would work from the sense that Stitch or Tink could be flying along with the monorail. Some effects like that would work from every angle. But I get what you're saying and agree that the effect would not work in any adequate quality to justify the insane cost of install & maintenance.

Also, some have suggested projection technology which would not work due to standing people on the monorail. They'd have to use see through LCD panels like you see on the modern slot machines or some PC Mod'ed cases. Such LCD panels would be very expensive and very likely that they'd be prone to failure due to the Florida sun melting the LCD. ...and before anyone else says "But they work at Universal", NO. Universal's system is internal to the car to create the illusion of a window. What I am stating would be an overlay to the window.

This will never happen.

I think we were typing at the same time, but yeah that's pretty much what I was getting at in the post just above yours. Also as you mentioned these are very expensive and with about 1,000 windows in the fleet of monorails plus ongoing replacements I think we can pretty much rule this whole thing out altogether.
