Can Disney open up a comic book store in say DHS featuring these and classic character comics or is it prohibited by the agreement?

I think that is prohibited. Now, they can open up a comic shop in DTD and have no repercussions, unless I'm mistaken. Speaking of, anyone know when the Avengers Vinylmation line is going to drop, if it hasn't already?

I saw Marvel Vinylmations in my local Disney store last week.

There are a number of good comics out there that are not based on Superhero characters, although the Marvel label directly tends to only do that. Image Comics produces the Walking Dead, Vertigo produces Fables which is an amazing comic about fairy tale characters who have been kicked out of their fairy tale lands and now live in secret, in New York. If the stories and characters are good, it can be successful. My only fear is that they'll try and make them too family friendly and aimed at kids which Fables and Walking Dead are not. Kid based comics have a much harder time as the primary market for comics now is adults who have the money to spend on tons of them as they can get quite expensive.

Something like this?

All very possible. However all I have very seen quoted here and other sites is Uni right to the characters, east of the Mississippi, not the Marvel name?

There is a clause in the contract limiting the use of the Marvel name:

iii.East or West of The Mississippi - permitted uses shall be limited to the use of specific Marvel characters and Marvel may not permit a licensee to use the name “Marvel” as part of the attraction name or marketing.

Even opening a Marvel shop in DTD could be a little tricky. The contract refers to "The Marvel Action Universe" which was a retail concept that Marvel had planned to develop. The contract allowed them to build these east of the Mississippi, but not within 60 miles of Uni.

Sure. When Marvel characters are cultrually irrelevant. Of course, we'll all be long dead by then.

No. I read somewhere an online editorial that made the case why both Disney and Uni might eventually come to some sort of arrangement. The fact is is that Universal is paying money to Marvel/ Disney to use all of 3 or 4 characters; some suit is going to look at that eventually and decide it's not worth it, especially when you consider that they're effectively paying to advertise a competitor's films, television shows, and merchandise.

Yes, but the agreement was made in 1994 at which point the licensing fee was set and only to increase by the rate of inflation. The value of Marvel has gone up astronomically since then due to the success of the movies so the licensing fee Uni is paying is probably a bargain.

True, but they can only use the comic versions, unless I'm mistaken. If they wanted to update the Hulk ride to bring it more in line with the Avengers film franchise, for example, then they're poop out of luck. The Dr. Doom ride is another example, as his name value among Marvel villains has dropped considerably since he's had less media exposure (I'd peg Loki as the most popular Marvel villain right now, due in no small part to Tom Hiddleston, because he's awesome).

Eventually, Uni is either going to want a new property in there or expand on another one ("What's that? J.K. is working on a Potter spin-off series set in the '30s? Cha-ching!").

Lets go one step further.....................it is not beyond the realm of possibility for Disney to flat out buy Uni in Fla or even Uni world wide

Hi Matt,

I was thinking the parks only and rights to the marvel,HHOP and other Uni characters and movies.

Its a wild idea, imagine a Monorail from WDW to UNI!

Just thinking here, (this usually gets me in trouble)

And it's not out of the realm of possibility for Comcast to flat out buy the Disney Parks. Your point?

No as likely!. Disney is a company that works together. So many of the Disney movie projects end up in the parks to a much greater degree then Universal movies do. You also have DCL working with WDW. Add it the DVB and the resorts on and off WDW property. Buying Disney would be much more expensive.

My point was this debate about marvel contract limitations, Disney buys Uni parks, Fla, Calif and the far east, ends the debate.

I would think that that is far more of a likelihood.

Sorry I disagree, WDW alone would command a amazing price.

Lets face it any company that drops 4 Billion on SR only, spending 2 billion on new attractions in WDW, just spent 1.5 billion on redoing CA with amazing success, and is in deep talks to buy LOTR, which will not be cheap, would easily be able to buy Uni.

But to each there own opinion
