New Horizons Idea ;p

A one of a kind, state of the art world first rollercoaster.

However, the track may have been a world's first but it wasn't designed by WED. It was by arrow dynamics. WEDjust came up with the simple of idea of a roller coaster (carnival) and let arrow dynamics design the track (world's first). So M:S was designed by WED the from the start as a carnival ride souped up. Just like Mattehorn was. A carnival ride with a state of the art track.

I never rode Horizons. However I've seen a lot of videos and IMO it looks very boring and dated.

"Boring" is in the eye of the beholder, so either you think it's boring or you don't.

"Dated" is another matter. Of all of the Future World attractions of EPCOT Center, NONE of them showed the possible future like Horizons did.

So if you say that it's dated, do we have undersea cities? Colonies and massive space stations for civilians to live in? Crops planted in former desert wastelands?

If all of those things have already happened, then I'd be glad to say that it's "dated", however that merely means that it could use an update.

Mission:Space really doesn't show anything futuristic. Yes it's supposed to be about a newer space shuttle, but the technology inside certainly isn't anything new or special.

...and Horizons wasn't date back in it's time! Even now you can look at Carouse of Progress, Country Bear Jamboree, Jungle Cruise, and all the othe disney classics and say their dated! But, they're still very popular. I mean, if they still had Horizons right now, i'm sure they would refurbish it about once every few years.

Mission space however, if you could compare it to Body Was and Star Tours, it sucks. I mean, at least they took a very good bit of time in making Star Tours and Body Wars. But M:S is nothing special. You get in an un-comfortable enclosure probably impossible to get out if there was a fire and it wouldn't come un-done for some reason, press buttons, spin, and watch a screen. Half of the time the pilot won't be there and it'll just do it anyways, what fun is that? At least the narrator could say: "Ok fine, i'll do it" -BEEP-

I made my point.

What do you mean by "once every few years"? Universe of Energy hasn't gotten an update in 16 years andthe Imagination! pavilion has been as cold and empty as Walt's cryogenic freezer for the past 12 years, just as two examples. To assume that they would update the attraction constantly is a false hope. Heck, they can't even update Carousel of Progress after 16 years, and that's not close to the scale and scope of Horizons.

Mission: Space may not be as cohesively themed as Body Wars or Star Tours, but to call it "nothing special", is in my opinion, a bit of an overstatement. Disney spent over $100 million on the attraction, but it is outstanding in technical design, and quite a revolutionary ride concept, just like the Kuka arm.

I prefer carousel of progress in it's original stage and don't want it to change. It hasn't been 16 years for universe of energy! Only 14 years! :lookaroun

Also if they have the time to refurbish it's a small world, rockin' roller coaster, and all that junk i'm pretty sure they would refurbish Horizons. Ellen's Energy Adventure in my opinion doesn't need a refurbishment. It still attracts guests, and it's not really THAT dated yet. 100 million dollars? That's nothing compared to when they built Test Track, and Spaceship Earth. Heck, building horizons costed more money than that. I'm sorry but it's just my opinion that M:S is just a good carnival ride.

Yeah, I'm not real impressed with M:S. And it has nothing to do with taking the place of Horizons. They actually had me excited for M:S for a minute. I thought I was going to be riding this great experience and it ended up being a big whoopie cushion.

And how anyone who rode through the begnning of Horizons could say it was boring is beyond me. The whole immersive experience was the best of any Disney ride. EVER. PERIOD. The invisioned "futures of the past" was one of the best parts of any ride. The themes, scenes (even the simple ones like the 50's) was pure fun and art, right down to the music and the smells.

Yeah, the ride was so boring that WDI ripped off its 20-year-old ending and put in SSE for it's "new exciting and fun" finale. :lookaroun

For the record. It was going to be updated if it had stayed but it was killed off instead. And when it was going to be built in DLP as a pavillion it was going to contain 2 thrill rides! Actually it was going to be a Space Mountain 2 pavillion and an updated Horizons was going to be a part of it, but stilll...

Doh! I thought EEA opened in 1994.

If you're referring to the upcoming IASW refurb, it's nowhere near on the scale of what would have had to happen to refurb Horizons. Ditto for Rock 'n' Rollercoaster.

For the record, the Horizons show building did not cost $100 million. Also, I believe that Test Track and Mission: Space are on par with each other in terms of complexity and scope.

At this point, I'd be fine with them just overhauling Mission: SPACE. Right now the story is really unexciting. We are sent into a capsule for space training. We're not actually going to Mars. We're just pretending. And we're going to talk really slow and boring in the process. Why don't we actually feel like we're on an exciting, optimistic, Epcotty adventure?

What about teens however? They need something to do also. It seems Disney forgets about this group.

Honestly, this group is so dumb and fickle that it begs the question, why tend to them? What is "popular" with teens one day, is "gay" to them the next. Teens don't know what they want or how the want it. Mostly they just want to hang out behind the 7-11 and not conform with society. Maybe if Disney built a 7-11 then, I dunno.

If teens need something to do they can appreciate what's going on around them, not having everything crafted to their special little needs.

Horizons is still my favorite for current and past attractions. It was fun to think that we could actually have a the bright and advanced future that was portrayed. This was definitely not a temporary thrill ride, but more a "worlds fair" type inspirational presentation.

Mission Space is ok, but I think it could have been great if they would have made it more of an "immersive" experience. They should have made the queue line more of an experience, rather than a static display. Give people the feeling that they are booking space travel to Mars....kind of a "Spaceport" theme.

The post ride show should have been a re-creation of a Mars Outpost station with "windows" that show Martian landscape, activity, etc. Give riders the feeling that they actually traveled to Mars.

You cannot compare M:S to Horizons, you just cant. And to say "o well this is better then that" is unfair and impossible. The attractions offer two distinct things, and have two totally different purposes.

All the people that enjoy Horizons so much seem to down talk M:S, reason being, and the only reason being is because it took away the beloved Horizons. Please understand it was not Disney saying, "lets take Horizons away, they love is so much lets make them suffer" Dont you think there was a reason they got rid of Horizons, quite possible the cost to run was not worth the amount of people riding. Horizons might be a classic in your eyes but in truth by the end of its run it was not getting enough traffic to justify keeping it open. The other classics another poster mentioned besides Country Bears gets quite a bit of traffic.

Was Horizons a good dark ride: yes

Did I enjoy it: yes

Should it still be around: maybe, I would have liked it to have been, but i dont wear the fanboy blinders, i know that this would not be positive for Disney

Do I like M:S: as a whole no, as a ride, yes, but the space could be used for something better.

Im more worried about the space left by Wonders of Life than a Horizons 2.0 IMO, M:S is fine. (for right now)

Hmm, a Spaceport theme, like traveling past maps of other star systems and places to visit, then interacting with some pre-flight games, maybe take your trip and after the ride, end up on a moving conveyor to show you destinations you can visit, and a futuristic home or something...

if they could tear down horizons and make Mission: Space, then no it's not impossible.

if Universal hollywood can turn E.T. adventure into the mummy, then no it's not impossible.

if disney is all about magic, then no it's not impossible.

nothing is impossible :)

"Impossible is nothing" - Adidas

Seriously though, they shouldn't get rid of Mission: SPACE. They should either get rid of the Imagination Pavilion or whatever that dome thing is next to the Universe of Energy.

As far as i'm conserned you make the most sense. Is it really that people just want the classic rides back? Is that why they hate the new rides? (dare I ask) If the science version of Imagination was first would you hate dreamfinder? Or ETAE being hated to stitch? It goes all the way from the enchanted tiki room down to The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh!

Now that I think of it, Stitch's great escape isn't all that bad to me. Heck, my children loved it! But just to let you know, I just dont like M:S for whatever reason.

i know that i make no sense. but based on youtube, Horizons seemed alot better than M:S, i hate how they replace dark rides with thrill rides.
