The acceleration tires run off of the cable so there are no powered wheels at the IG station. Will be very smooth and quiet.

Isn't there a 'woosh' as the cabins accellerate and displace all that air? I guess it's reduced by the fact it's all open air... but there is still a lot of tire contact being made, and a large block of air being displaced by this big mass being accelerated into 10-12mph.

I just got done touring the first American D-Line lift today. I think you'll be surprised how smooth and close to silent the Skyliner is. Those are two of the big selling points of D-Line. You will be able to have a conversation at a normal volume right underneath the stations.

No hum and clicky clack as they run though the towers?

Well I never thought it would drown out conversation... just that it will be a large volume of noise in a space that normally only has background music to be pleasing. My point was they can’t use distance to mitigate the noise when the walkway (and only path) in the area is so walled in by the skyliner.

Noise tolerance is a relative thing... it’s like the monorail... it’s quiet relative to other transport.. but not silent. And here the cabins will be passing by much more frequently.

The proximity is still quite interesting to see how it pans out.

This will be brand new and is the premiere 'top of the line' offering, but I'm my experience usually vibrations from like the windows on the station or the cabins rattling as they go over the towers are the loudest parts of a lift.

Sometimes towers can get noisy and have this sort of metal vibrating sound but I'm sure Disney will be more on top of fixing those things especially being closer to or above hotels etc. whereas a ski lift is out in the woods and nobody cares.

I do think it will be somewhat noisy inside the CB station where the three drive terminals are, but that is out by itself.

Not sure if you have ever been to the IG, but I believe the major concern some are expressing is surrounding the potentiality for any increased noise in this area.

It’s pretty quiet for the most part, with the background music and the occasional horn from the friendship boats filling the air.

The smells waft in from England and France, and it’s there are usually lots of birds chirping in the surrounding trees.

It’s just a peaceful area in an otherwise very busy place.

The concern is born out of the potential noise and racket due to previous experiences with lifts.

As with most concerns with this project, only time will tell.

I don't want to minimize people being allowed to have concerns, but the concerns on these things are not generally being expressed by people with actual relevant experience.

If anyone who has actual experience with more than a few handful of chair lifts, let alone a D-line wants to validate the concerns, we need to find them.

The actual concern I'd express is the huge increase in guest traffic through the IG, that's what will actually ruin the ambiance, not the hum.

I do not have a lot of experience with lift systems, however I believe a properly operating one should be near silent. Only once have I encountered a lift, many years back, that had a exceptionally loud generator at its base. There was no peace for 100 yards surrounding that beast. Disney would never accept that.

Fortunately, as others have mentioned, all of that heavy equipment will be at CBR, though those hotel rooms closest might not like it if power goes out in the middle of the night before the Skyliner closes...

Our backup generator at work occasionally kicks in due to the local utility being unable to keep the lights on, and it sounds like a jet roaring down the runway.

If you’re out in the back parking lot or within 2-3 football fields of the thing, it sounds insanely loud.

The back up generator is contained in the CBR hub, not in the towers next to the CBR guest rooms. So, no one is going to be jolted out of their sleep if they kick in. And when they do kick in, they'll only be running another 10 minutes to clear guests off the lines.

It is very likely Disney bought the option with interior lighting, which is recharged during the day by solar panels. There won't be anything on the towers... just like there isn't anything when the monorail goes through areas away from buildings or roads.

The boat from DS to PO:R is scary dark at night.

I'd actually be more interested or concerned with the noise level that has potential to increase due to the number of people in the area more than the sound of the Skyliner itself. Obviously it won't be like the front gate prior to park opening, but that area is incredibly loud as you have so many people packed in and it does become a shouting situation at times, especially in the echo filled area under the monorail station. I'm hopeful the pace of the gondolas does not outweigh the bag check and touch points, but that could be dubious of me and if a bottleneck forms and it becomes a sand through an hourglass situation, it could get a bit chaotic, unlike the calm, casual place it is most of the time now.

How often does power go out at WDW? Does anyone who works there have an estimate of how often it happens? I remember hearing about people going there to ride out several hurricanes and the hotels had food and entertainment going on and obviously power. Do the hotels have backup generators too? If so are they loud? Maybe since the power lines are mostly underground there’s not a huge need for backup generators.

The gondolas won’t run when the power is out, they will only use the backup generator to clear the people already on the line so likely not for more than 10 minutes. If it happens every night or even as often as once a week then maybe it’s a concern, but if total loss of power is much less frequent (which I suspect it is) I don’t think it’s a big deal for guests in the nearby hotel to hear the generator. You are also talking about a period of maybe several hours at night for people with really little kids or who just turn in early.
