New cruiser and motion sickness questions

Hello mateys,

My son and I want to take a cruise of 5/7 days. We are worried about motion sickness because last June we took an Amtrak trip from L.A. to Seattle (35 hours/sleepercar) and were shocked to feel our bodies still moving after we got off the train!

My son was not happy about that and we rushed to the hotel and jumped in bed and prayed it would be gone by morning..lol. Well, I felt ok the next day and my son felt better by lunch time.

We don't want to go through this again. Would you recommend Bonine or rx/patches for the best effectiveness. What are pros/cons?

Whatever you try, try it out before you go so you know what the effects/side-effects may be. Bonine (meclazine) is similar to non-drowsy Dramamine. I can't take the non-drowsy Dramamine because it makes me into a zombie but the Bonine I'm okay with. I have the patches but we've never used them so not sure of the effects. My father-in-law is veeeery prone to motion sickness and he does just fine cruising with the patch. Another suggestion is to take ginger tablets. Ginger generally settles the stomach hence the reason your grandmother wanted you to drink ginger-ale when you were sick at her house. Again, I'd try taking them at home beforehand just in case they don't agree with you. To keep from experiencing motion after you get home I've heard you should keep taking whatever you're taking or leave the patch on a day or two after you get off the ship. Both my sons and I could still feel the motion for a few days after we got home. It's not bothersome for us, just makes us sad because it adds to the cruise decompressiong sadness. LOL! Oh! And then there's the sea-bands. I've never used them or know anyone who has. I've read things where others have and they swear by them. Not much help, I know. :D

I get motion sickness but I do okay on ships. I take non drowsy Dramamine every morning as a preventative measure.

Sweetpee is right, try it before hand! I had a very bad reaction to prescription Bonine on the first morning of our first cruise.

And she's right again about continuing to take it when you get home. It helps so much with the "land motion"! :)

I will thanks! Nothing worse than feeling nauseous.

Before our first cruise, we basically bought every motion sickness remedy from the drugstore. What ended up being indispensable for me was ginger gum. It was so convenient and effective for soothing nausea. I kept it with me and used on land for a few days after if I got a little woozy.

I also found that the only time I was nauseous was if I got even the tiniest bit hungry. As long as I steadily ate throughout the day, the nausea stayed away. There are lots of options to eat throughout the day, and warding off motion sickness is a good excuse for an ice cream cone every time you walk by the station ;)

Where do you find the ginger gum? I would like to try some when I go fishing offshore.

The first days you have to her used to the movement of the boat! I u ever start to feel sea sick never ever go back into your cabin and lay down its only going to make things worse! There all pills that people say work great' and for getting off the ship atbthe end of the week you will start swaying for no reason on dry land! Your body is used to it and it still does it from time to time max 2 days!

We experienced motion sickness for he first time on our last cruise...terrible. We were prepared with patches and gravol (Canadian version of Dramamine) The gravol didn't help because you really need to take it before you start to feel sick. The patches did take the nausea away, however, I felt awful while wearing it. No one else, in the family, had the same reaction I did, but it was almost worse than feeling sick. Needless to say I took it off after about 24 hours. I did more research once we returned home and understood why I had such a bad reaction. Shame on me for not doing the research first. On our upcoming cruise we will be armed with mounds and mounds of ginger, in every form imaginable. It's the only proven cure for nausea without the common side effects of medication. I will make sure I have other remedies for the rest of the gang but I'll be sticking to the ginger (it helps that I love ginger anyway)
Just make sure you do you're research on any medication before you go. Have a great time! Even motion sickness didn't keep us from having a blast!!

The ginger gum is on Walgreens.com. I'd post a link but I was looking at the mobile website from my phone. I haven't looked but drugstore.com and other similar websites will probably also carry it. Cool! I'll have to get some, too.
