When my wife and I went one October, it was when Hurricane Isabelle was churning off the coast and we received some rain bands. It was heavy wind and rain, but it was only for a couple of days. We went to Disney Quest and did indoor attractions. It is what you make of it. There are lots of things to keep you busy. :)

I would not worry either. We flew down to WDW in 1994 and started our decent through the eye of Hurricane Gordon.

No offense intended, but I find that very hard to believe, mostly because of the fact that passenger jets don't fly through hurricanes. Also, it wasn't a hurricane when it crossed over Florida, it was still only a tropical storm.

Usual Florida summer weather pattern:

Possible rain early morning hours....no rain in the morning and early afternoon....thunderstorms start to hit in the afternoon after 3:00pm....and then mostly no rain at night.

Also I believe local kids will be in school by next week...which means even less crowds...

Have a great trip (to all those going next week).

Okay, someone has to say it.....Hakuna Matata !!! I lived in Ormond Beach ( just north of Daytona ) for eight years. Everything else said here about Florida weather is true. In the summer it will rain pretty much every day. That does not mean from morning to night. with the ehat being what it is, a light shower is often a welcome relief !! Also, I can't remember ever hearing about a hurricane even affecting Disney - its smack in the middle of the state. I lived on the mainland and my parents were on the beachside of the Halifax River. In the 8 years we lived there they were evacuated once for a pending storm that ended up switching direction and they were able to return home in less that 24 hours.

Hurricanes are obviously devastating when they hit, but you shouldn't worry unless your vacation also includes a beachside stop either before or after Disney !! If anything, the storm may bring cooler temperatures and some rain to the parks. Rain can be torrential at times, but almost always brief. Just duck inside an attraction, shop, or restaurant. By the time you come out odds are the rain will be over !

Enjoy.

Sorry to differ from you, but the pilot did announce this as not to scare us because of the turbulance. He said we were taking that opportunity to land and we started descending. Our flight was almost cancelled because of it and I remember exactly the airline saying they would time it correctly to get us landed safely in Orlando. I was not trying to say I was flying in one of the official "Hurricane Hunters"... Technically, Gordon is still classified as a hurricane for 1994 because it did reach 75 mph, check the websites. Not sure the exact wind speed when it crossed Florida, I am not a meteorologist. The point I was making from the thread was to help him out that just because there is a storm out there, he may not be affected by it. By the way, I never said I flew into a hurricane. I am not stupid. I am right here on the coast and have lived through many hurricanes myself.

Hurricane Kim
Heavy winds knocked down some of the New york skyline in MGM. and the parks were closed for either half or one day.

I've lived in South West Florida all my life (17 years this month) and the chances of you encountering a hurricane or even a tropical storm are not likely. I can say that it will rain at some point during your vacation. It's August in Florida, and that's just the way it is, but I don't think it'll get any more severe than an afternoon thunderstorm. The news always blows hurricanes way out of porportion. Usually they only blow up the coast anyway. The gulf stream catches the storms before the eye can move inland. No worries, enjoy your trip!

I stand corrected. When was that ? I would guess it must have been after I moved back up north which was 1991.

I think it was around 1993 or 94. Hard to rember exactly.

As for the original thread.

What will be will be. Worrying if a storm is going to hit during the one week of the year is like wondering if you are gong to win the lotto. Just make your plans and go.

Man, this is our first trip to Disney in August, and it certainly did not cross my mind that we would be right in the middle of freaking hurricane season. At first, Hurricane Alex had me worried; however, it moved away from the Florida area. Now, here comes what may become Hurricane Bonnie. Early estimates expect South Florida to be affected. Man oh man, should I expect to see the worst of the worst weather wise next week?

As a Louisianian, you shouldn't have any problems. Personally, I'm not afraid of Hurricanes; I sat outside for Lilly. I live about an hour or so from the Gulf, and we didn't have it that bad. Like others said, Orlando is in the middle of Florida; so you're protected. At least you're going now not in September or early October. That period always has the stronger hurricanes.

Louisiana?

You're from Louisiana and not comfortable with Hurricanes?

As folks have said, central Florida rarely has a problem, even if a storm hits. I've been there through a few minor ones, wind and rain for about half a day followed by some of the most beautiful days you could imagine.

Do bring a poncho, and just roll with the weather!

Only real problem is the flight in/out. I've had some rides that could be an E or F ticket.

the one time it did have an effect on the parks was in 1999 for Hurricane Floyd, they closed all the parks. In fact, all of LBV was closed. Even the toll booths for two days. They prepped well, but, all they got was wind and rain, nothing of any real note. It was a hoot. We had overslept the morning of our departure (my s/o set the clock for pm not am, which is amazing cause he is sooooo careful about this stuff). We got to the airport and the flight to Orlando had been cancelled. We managed to get rerouted to Tampa via Cincinatti (sp?). Alamo changed my car ressies and the cost for the change was minimal. My kids, who did not oversleep, were in Orlando from PVD.
We landed in Tampa began the drive to MCO and the traffic heading OUT of Orlando was horrible, our ride was hassle free. Dee's, my S/O, kids got lost on the way to Manchester, NH and missed their flight. We got to MCO, the place was deserted, found my kids and got to WDW to find EVERYTHING closed.
WHAT A DAY that was. :)
At any rate, I believe that Floyd had a significant effect on all of the Orlando area in 1999.
The ironic thing is they got it worse in CT while we were gone.

Well let me be the first to say that Charley haunted me and I was dead wrong by all my postings here. I hope all our local friends are safe and secure and those visiting made it back home (albeit a little late).
