Nervous 'bout Braces

I've thought about it, and I can think of several people that I would just LOVE to shoot a rubber band at. :fork: But I don't go to the same school they do anymore... My brother would make a good target though... :D

No, don't worry! I panicked when they first said I couldn't have any gummies or popcorn  but I have them alot, and really nothing happens! Trust me!

I had braces for three years (6th, 7th, & 8th grade) and I hated them. The monthly ortho visit to get them tightened left me in pain for at least two days, unable to eat anything but soup and mashed potatoes (even that hurt!). Food gets stuck in them and it's a pain to get it out. They look bad. Ugh. I hated braces. Hopefully you'll have a better experience than I did.

woah... you didn't have the big, clunky, twenty year old braces, did you? Those are the ones that are really supposed to hurt.

i had braces before . not that bad after you get used to them. give up doritos, HA not me. since we are talking about teeth, can somebody give me some insite on what to expect after I get my wisdom teeth taken out July 30?! one is already coming in and it hurts (on top of the sinus headaches i'm having right now too)

I had mine out 2 years ago. I enjoyed it because I got to lie on the couch for a day and be pampered. I went all the way under for mine and woke up feeling more relaxed than I've ever been in my whole life. I felt like I could sleep forever!

You have to be careful about eating chips, things with seeds, etc for a little while afterwards and you will be a little sore. But it's not bad.

Be sure to follow their directions to avoid a dry socket. That's the last thing you want. No straws and no smoking!

Whilst not technically braces I don't think it too big a thread drift, I had my lower jaw shortened back in the eighties. This involved having it surgically broken then sanded down and put back together. To keep it in place until the bones knitted I had solid braces stuck to upper and lower teeth, wired in place through the jaw and clamped shut.

I was on liquid food and the most fowl tasting mouthwash for six weeks. But I got to look like Jaws out of the Bond films for that time :D

I've had a few teeth pulled out but I was fine the next day. This time I'm having all 4 wisdom teeth pulled because they are growing sideways into my other teeth and now one is coming in and it HURTS :fork: I'm going crazy. I've heard all these horror stories about your wisdom teeth and would like to have a general idea on what to expect. when the pain started yesterday, the first thing I said was I have to book an appt. with the oral surgeon SOOnN
because I'm going to disney in 4 weeks and don't want to be in pain! I have to deal with the pain for a week and then those suckers are coming out and I'm off to disney. :sohappy:

Bottom wisdom teeth are more difficult than the tops. The bone is a lot denser on the bottom, whereas on the top it's spongier and the teeth are easier to remove.

As far as the pain goes, lot of it depends on the state of your teeth/mouth. There are factors nobody can control. But the better your oral surgeon, the less pain and difficulty you'll have. Good luck :)

I have braces now and I'm 24. I have the clear ones on top and metal on the bottom. The worse part for me was the spacers in the beginning. I had to have all 4 wisdom teeth removed and two top teeth out before I could start the braces process. About two weeks after the extractions they put the spacers in.

(The spacers look like little rubber bands that they put between some of your molars to make room for the bands that anchor the braces in place.)

Anyhow, the spacers pushed one of the molars into one of the cavities that was left by the wisdom tooth removal and my jaw wound up being swollen really bad. :( So after they removed that one the swelling went down and the braces have been smooth sailing ever since. You get used to them pretty quick and they are only sore for a few days after an adjustment. I think it is completely worth it for the results you get! If you have any questions just let me know, I'd be happy to answer them for you.

Also, a great website is www.archwired.com , they have a lot of info and some nice people that are always helpful.

I don't know what all of you guys are talking about, when I got my braces they hurt like hell and I couldn't eat for over a week! Not to mention everytime they had to tighten them or made you wear those rubber band thingies or the "sea chains." My teeth just hurt thinking about it... :(
