We are going to book a last minute holiday to orlando from roughly august 18th for two weeks. We are going to do a cruise one of these weeks.

Can you give us advice when the schools return in the USA and which week is most likely to be less busy in the themeparks.

Thanks...

From past posts, I get the impression that the American schools go back when there are still a couple of weeks of August left, so it looks like you've picked the best time.

I believe the last week in August wont be best for summer months. Southern US schools are back in school in August but most northern schools are September.

The later the week in August.. the better the crowds at the parks. I agree with previous posters that southern states schools go back into session on the third week of August.

Have fun on your trip

Ok, we are now not gonna do a cruise and be in Orlando for two weeks due to the cruise prices being too high for us. My parents say they would prefer a villa for two weeks.

When you say the parks will be busy does that mean really busy like xmas/new year because we went over the xmas and new year holidays last year and it was pretty bad.

Going the last week of November/First of December is usually a great time, plus you get to see the Christmas decor. Crowds aren't terrible, as most schools are still in session, including colleges. I also like late January. I went that time this year and the weather was great and crowds very minimal.

Crowds will be nowhere near what you experienced over Christmas week. As others have said, some schools will be back in session when you visit and others will be preparing to go back, with all in session the week of September 4. There will be a bit of a local surge the weekend of Sept. 1-4 due to the Labor Day holiday. That will mostly effect MK.

Days will be very warm, but if you get to the parks around opening, you will have relatively short waits and easy access to FP times to allow for the hottest part of the day.

Enjoy

Just be fore-warned (and others have already said), it's going to be VERY hot. But with people going back to school, and people getting ready to go back, it shouldn't be too bad. We went the week preceeding Memorial Day, and it wasn't NEARLY as bad as people made it out to be!

Work around the heat

If you are going in August, plan so as to minimize the effects of the heat. Heat will be your biggest problem. Get to the parks early, when they open, then leave during the middle of the day. Come back in the afternoon and stay late. That way you avoid the hottest part of the day and also usually the most crowded times. :animwink:

I'll parrot what others are saying as true.

In mid-August, many-but not all-schools are back in session. The major holdout is schools from the Northeast. The parks won't be deserted, but considerably less-crowded than the rest of the summer, and almost-certainly nothing like you would experience during a holiday like Easter or Christmas...

Now, having said that, the first Monday in September is a national holiday-Labor Day. It's usually the "last hurrah" of the summer. Usually, all those still-closed schools in the Northeast open one or two days after Labor Day. Many families take advantage of the three day weekend and go to WDW.

Here's my guess:
You're arriving approximately on the 18th. It's a weekend, so there will be lots of locals there as well as vacationers. Plan on going to Epcot; it tends to be the least crowded park on weekends (except for the big guns like Soarin' Test Track & Mission Space, but even then that doesn't often mean large crowds everywhere else).

When Monday rolls around, and until Thursday or Friday, the crowds will seem really really light. Indulge as best as you can.

The weekend rears its ugly head, go back to Epcot, or just hang out poolside and re-energize.

The following weekdays will be busier than the week before, and will get busier the closer you get to the weekend, as more people arrive for a 3, 4, 5 or even 6 day Labor Day Weekend. The crowds should still be tolerable, but not as sparse as your first week.

The major wrench in those plans could be the fact that it'll be Hurricane Season. It could keep people from coming in, so fewer crowds. But they might have to close the parks, too. If you're getting a villa, be on the safe side and at least stock up on some foods and movies in case you're stuck inside one day weathering the weather. And, again, plan on breaks from the weather, which will probably be absolutely brutal.
