Nanea Volcano feature pool at Disney's Polynesian Resort closing in August for extended refurb

Keep Moving Forward
A boy died in a pool at Pop Century whilst swimming when lifeguards weren't on duty, despite signs stating swimming was at own risk (http://edition.cnn.com/2013/03/13/us/florida-disney-death/). Unfortunately some accidents happen and also some parents mistakenly think that Disney is "safe" and they don't need to monitor their children. Expect to see more fenced in pools, so they can be locked off when no lifeguard is on duty, particularly the pools with slides etc.
Fences can alsp keep non resort guests out since you need a key/MB to get in.

I'm a Darwinist do dumb stuff get eliminated from the gene pool. Dumb stuff includes not watching your kids in potentially hazardous locations like giant tubs of chlorinated dihydrogen monoxide.

It also includes jogging on the road with music blasting in your ears so you can't hear the car which is about to run you over. Americans suck at situational awareness.

"Dumb stuff" also includes failing to protect your company from massive potential civil liability.

Guest Stupidity != Negligence

A fence is a logical and reasonable precaution but one would think that Disney could come up with something nicer looking than the Home Store vinyl 'value' fencing they are using. The green cyclone fence used around the tennis courts is more effective and less visually obtrusive and you can put an anti-climb section at the top.

IF Disney wanted to really eliminate the liability they would immediately close all pools and fill in holes and replace with sun lounges.

Where exactly did disney use this "Home store vinyl fencing" you speak of?

The beach has not been butchered. It's all still there and will be completely reopened after the refurb. Only the most eastern portion won't be prime fireworks viewing, but over 24 years, people didn't use that very much. The highly used area will be back.

As for the lobby, they had little choice on that. There were significant problems that were causing issues with the building. And I can say after bring there last week the experience isn't bring lessened, changed yes but not lessened.

When Disney puts bungalows as the new view from the beach and many long houses, that is butchering. I have used that portion of the beach over the holidays to view the fireworks so another minus. The lobby fountain is in no way equivalent in imagineering. Yes the old one had issues, doesn't mean Disney could not build a better water feature, yet they chose a puny little fountain that they can roll in with a forklift. Nobody will be sitting and relaxing around that fountain. The kids loved the volcano pool, a unique feature for the Poly. Unique is going by the wayside during this refurbishment.

Bet Disney Imagineers would love to create a new amazing fountain. Unfortunately Disney is going in this direction....

Precisely - I guess all these hotels which have room rates which are a third of the Poly and used by business travelers are all not for profit operations.

An appropriately themed fence would have been wrought iron or a reasonable facsimile and it would have been far less visually obtrusive.
That was a temporary fence that was installed due to fabrication delays with the intended fence so that the pool could reopen. It was shortly after replaced by a custom metal fence.

Pool looks fine, I'll miss the cabanas and am grateful we got to experience them many times in the past. I still don't understand why they had to change the look of the volcano.
