My Trip Report(s) Thread

Since everyone hates my negativity, I thought I'd start sharing some positive things about my experiences at the parks, offering constructive criticism and basically recounting my trips!

I went to DLR late yesterday afternoon with the intention of getting drunk at Hearthstone Lounge and doing Haunted Mansion as many times as I could. It was extremely windy, so I tried to time it so I'd arrive when the wind died down. That was mostly a success. I stopped by Lee's to get a couple #12's. I drank Napa Smith Hopageddons at Hearthstone in the outdoor smoking section with the fireplace, which I couldn't recommend more. It's my favorite beer and I can only find it at Disney. I love that smoking section! It's so relaxing and it feels like you're at Hogwarts or something.

I headed into the parks shortly before dusk, using the Grand Californian entrance to DCA, which I promptly exited. For many months now, as far as DCA goes, I've only experienced the redone Condor Flats and Buena Vista Street as I travel from the Grand Californian entrance to the park exit. I don't dislike the new Condor Flats by any means, but I think my issue with it comes down to the original design and how little was actually done with the redo. It looks nicer for the most part, although the removal of the Soarin' Over California sign on the building stinks, and I'm not exactly sold on the choice of colors. Ultimately, it's just an awkward little area with a bathroom taking up most of one side. I prefer the old area music loop. Jerry Goldsmith's score with be dearly missed in a matter of months.

DL wasn't too crowded! Main Street was lovely as always. My favorite thing about that area of the park is walking down the middle of the street with the knowledge that in the summer of 1985, a Return to Oz Main Street Electrical Parade float traversed the same path! My Star Trek shirt got some compliments, which was shocking since I usually get death stares and borderline threats. Seriously.

Anyway, I opted to exit the hub through the Frontierland entrance and walked along the stagnant Rivers of America where those great vessels are sadly moored and nothing is happening. It's horrible during the day, but you do reap benefits in the evening in New Orleans Square with the lack of Fantasmic crowds and that ruckus. Not to hate on Fantasmic or anything.

There it was: The Haunted Mansion. I've said it before, I'll say it again. If Disneyland/Magic Kingdom was only comprised of Haunted Mansion, that'd be fine with me! It's just perfect. Better than everything, except Star Trek and John Williams. I did it 15 times in a row. Only got the blast-up ghoul in the graveyard a couple times. Many e-stops were had! Most of the crowds were okay. It was walk-on status the entire time.

You know, one of the things I love about Haunted is the simplicity of many of the effects/illusions. I mean, come on, the automatic door knockers in the Corridor of Doors? Super charming. The pop-up ghouls that are just heads on sticks? So cheap. So mega charming. The sheet with a spirit painted on it being blown by a fan, just kinda like rippling towards the end of the ride? Ultra charming. Amazing. Better than everything. Love it. Mmm.

The park seemed deserted, especially after nightfall. It was very strange for a Sunday, for any day at DL. On my 15th time through the graveyard, I decided I wanted to watch Star Trek: The Motion Picture. You know, that film was directed by Robert Wise, who also directed The Haunting, which influenced The Haunted Mansion. There's your Haunted Mansion/Star Trek connection.

So, I'm heading out of the park, and as I pass by the Pirates of the Caribbean, I see absolutely no one. It's a walk-on. I couldn't resist. Boy, is this one in great shape these days. Everything is working. No missing characters. Tons of fireflies in the Blue Bayou Lagoon. Clouds working. It's at 100%. The new boats are kinda rough when they collide with one another. The 20 greatest minutes you can spend in a boat later, I'm displaced in the middle of New Orleans Square. I have to pee, so I head to the bathroom behind French Market. When I'm finished, I realize I'm once again right next to The Haunted Mansion. I couldn't resist! I did it again!

On my way out, I grab a Matterhorn Macaroon. What a great evening. DL is the greatest place on Earth.

You had me through the get drunk part and then lost me for the rest.

You spend a lot of time on a Disney message board so I'm not buying that you're not a Disney parks fan...I mean if you aren't, then you're just here to troll. But if you are a parks fan...well, then you're just here to troll as well.

It's all good, I think most folks really don't take you all that seriously anyways. I mean, it's a message board about Disney not rocket science, should we really take anyone that seriously?

I wish Maynard still worked the Haunted Mansion.

Interesting you say that...I know that there are folks that absolutely cannot stand the guy, stating that he detracts from the show by purposely trying to get attention through his actions. I have no issue with him.

I'm definitely pro-Maynard. I think he almost always adds something to the experience vs. being any kind of a distraction. Love his Tiki Room intros. He's the only one that really displays any kind of enthusiasm towards it and gets into character for the show. Does his thing and then gets out of the way.

Only saw him at Mansion once, my very first visit back in 2000. When the lights went out in the stretching room, he pulled out these glow in the dark jelly finger puppets (like the ones below). I was an instant fan. :)

Nice write up. We always stay at CAHR (however you spell the acronym) and I always polish off the Napa Smiths and close down the bar er, lounge. Although Uva Bar is fastly becoming my second fave. The wife loves the smoking area by the fire pit too. For me, my HM is Steakhouse 55. They make me feel like a big shot everytime we show up and the prime rib I can do 15 times in a row! Oh, last trip I wore my Warhammer shirt and no one made a comment until we were picking up our bags and a CM lost it and was like, "You play Warhammer? What faction?!" Its always nice to get recognized! Hope to see you there sometime.

I only encountered Maynard once and did not enjoy the way he called attention to himself (for about a full minute) in the middle of the Tiki Room performance, kinda wrecking the whole atmosphere. I don't like the idea of him turning HM's stretching room into his own personal Pee Wee Herman show, BUT... I had every one of those exact finger puppets when I was a kid... so now it's impossible for me to dislike him.

Call me old, but I miss the good old days. Remember when visiting the Mansion how they used to let you into the foyer and close the door behind you. Then you would get to hear the entire prologue spiel before entering a stretching room. It was a more civilized time...

Some HM cast members close the doors, some don't.

I've seen Maynard at the Tiki Room.

You have to watch the special edition of Star Trek The Motion Picture that has more background noises (yeah and a couple more scenes). The bridge seems way less sterile in it.

I prefer the theatrical version. I just don't get why so many people think ST:TMP is boring. I love it!

Uva! I almost stopped there on the way out! I love it! I need to go back. I've been recommended Steakhouse 55. I want to try it. Maybe next time.

Weird! I've seen him do Tiki about a half dozen times and, aside from the intro, he keeps to the background throughout the entire show.

I'm not really sure what you mean. I am a Disney parks fan. I've been going since I was a little squirt. However, I am a Haunted Mansion fan first and foremost. You have to understand that Disneyland goes 5 months with the classic version out of commission. Whenever it comes back, this is how I am. Couldn't it be said that you're trolling my thread?

If by "Disney parks fan", you mean a fan of Frozen, Star Wars, DCA flat rides and gaudy holiday overlays, then, well, no. I guess I'm not!

You have to admit that your tastes are pretty specific. Other than HM and Pirates I don't recall you expressing excitement about a Disney park attraction since I've been here. Maybe you don't realize it, but you also come across as being very cynical toward Disneyland Resort.
