My Not-So-Scary Disney Vacation

Back to Life, Back to Reality….

Whew. Well I can’t believe it’s here and gone already! But in all honesty when I think about our first day down there it feels like forever ago. Here’s my trip report [I apologize in advance for the number of times I say the word ‘Awesome’ in the report.]

Saturday:
5am- On the road again. I live in Central Kentucky and we usually drive to Walt Disney World. In all honesty it takes about 14 hours including stops and when we leave at 5 we usually end up in Orlando around 7pm. So it’s not as bad as it sounds. The night before though, I did not sleep very good, I was pretty much like the kids in the Disney commercial “We’re too excited to sleep!”

7pm- We met our other friends who had flown down earlier in the day at the Saratoga Springs Resort. We stayed in a 2 BR, 2 BA vacation club condo. It was so NICE! The only thing that kind of surprised me was that the rooms had outside entrances. That was probably my least favorite thing about the resort—and I’ll explain why a little later in the report.

We really didn’t do too much that evening, we had dinner at Artist’s Palate (the Saratoga Springs food court) which was great and pretty much crashed.

Sunday:
We hit Disney MGM…I mean…Hollywood Studios. First thing we got a FP for Toy Story Midway Mania, and rode the Great Movie Ride. I didn’t really have any expectations about TSMM I thought it would be cool, but as I am TERRIBLE at Buzz Lightyear I wasn’t too pumped for another ride I can lose at. Guess who got the highest score? You guessed it, I did!!! It was probably my favorite thing from the whole week. [And PS- Thank you to whomever posted here the strategy and tips, when the ride first opened. They really helped!] We did the usual DHS stuff, nothing new to report there.

One of the things I really wanted to do was see the Narnia exhibit and have my picture with Prince Caspian. We were in line… la de da de da… and out of the backstage area walked 2 CM’s in dressy clothes for CM’s and behind them walked Matt Lauer and his family. We were so shocked! I couldn’t even take a picture. A few minutes later it was our turn to meet Prince Caspian, who was really great. He asked who we were and my BFF said “Oh I’m a Princess” and I said “Oh, I am just a peasant” so he made me an honorary Princess of Narnia for the day.

The other notable thing from Sunday was that I rode the TOT for the first time since my very first trip in 2001. I was a little nervous and of course the CM in the loading elevator sat us in the front and poked fun at me. Classic Samie though, I was all scared and screaming my head off and when we were done I was like “Can we go again?” After that we walked over to the 2nd Fantasmic show. Fantasmic was awesome as usual. It may be me, but it seemed like there was a lot more pyro at the finale.

Monday:
We actually went to St. Petersburg, Florida this day to visit my old stomping ground. It was beautiful that day, a great one to go to the beach and kick around.

That evening for dinner we ate at Chef Mickey’s. A first for me! We had a great time, and our waitress Marion was awesome! At the end of our meal when we were all pretty stuffed, she brought over 4 Halloween cupcakes with candles and said (to me) “So Today is your Birthday!” and winked. I said “Why yes it is!” and everyone sang Happy Birthday to me. It was so random. So Monday was my very merry Un-Birthday.

Great report so far. I went in with the same expectations for tsmm, and ended up loving it! I completely avoided all pictures and reviews before though, and I think that helped

Tuesday:
Was a LOOONNNNG Day! It started around 6am and ended a little after 1am.
We spent the day at the Magic Kingdom (and went to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.) It was very Magic Kingdom-ey we did all the usuals including seeing the Haunted Mansion updates that I have been anxiously awaiting. I love the Halloween decorations and tried to take as many pictures as I could.

That night we prepped for Not So Scary. I couldn’t get it together beforehand so I just took my Cinderella Crown and wore it with a puffy sleeve blue shirt and jeans. I really loved Not So Scary. We got lots of good candy, and cute pictures with the characters. The CM’s at the event were really into it and when you walked down Main Street there were a ton welcoming you to the event.

Some of the notable costumes we saw were: Kuzco, Isma, and Kronk from the Emperor’s New Groove, Mary and Bert—that were so good we thought they were the real Mary and Bert, a Toy Story Family (Mom was Bo Peep, Dad was Zurg, Kids were Buzz, Jessie, and an Alien), Edward Scissorhands (my personal favorite) who was 100% committed to the character, I wanted to get a picture with him but didn’t, and our collective favorite…a man dressed as Tim Gunn from Project Runway.

We loved Hallowishes (and got to see it twice actually) but ESPECIALLY the parade, with all the Haunted Mansion characters!!! The grave diggers with the shovel routine was just amazing. But I also loved Captain Jack Sparrow (shocker I know!) and the pirate float.

If you look closely this scarecrow's bag says "Main Street Emporium" and she is holding a doll with Mickey ears!

I loved the skeleton band! One was playing a Keytar, which is my favorite 80's rock band instrument.

Wednesday:
EXHAUSTED!!!!
We checked into our room at the Pop Century [the other girls, spent the rest of the week at the beach.] And headed over to the Animal Kingdom.

AK day was pretty crowded, over near Expedition Everest it was wall to wall people, crazy! Again at the AK we did all the usuals. At EE the Yeti may have not been in “full mode” it was very dark in that scene and there was a strobe light on (which I didn’t remember from before.) The vulture at the track end scene before you go backwards was not running either. Everything else seemed the same. Like it mattered, I still rode it like 5 times! I also rode Dinosaur for the first time, our picture was HILLARIOUS! I was leaning away with a weird startled face and my BFF had her hands over her face. It was cooler than I thought it would be.

OH! For Tuesday thru Sunday we had the free Dining Plan. Boy Disney lost money on that transaction! We had lunch at the Yak and Yeti counter service. Which is one of my new favorite restaurants! I had the Crispy Honey Chicken, it was very good but a LOT of food! We encountered a lot of great CM’s that day I wish I could remember all their names.

Great pictures and report. I also love the crispy honey chicken at Yak & Yeti.

DisneyBunny... it's sad to hear that the characters rarely interact with you when it's just adults :( . We usually don't have that problem.

They do interact with us, just not as much as they do now that we've got a kid. I've noticed a ton more time spent at our table than when it was just us adults.

I know what you mean. The only thing that cures me is starting to plan my next trip.

I still can't get over how much I enjoyed it. I really wish we would have had the opportunity to ride it more than once. :(

Yay Sammie! Can't wait to hear more!!!

Thanks! I have the rest written so hopefully I will get it finished today.

Love this pic!! The characters usually never interacted with us much when it was just us adults - you got lucky!! :D

I know! I am so glad that we got to snap a picture of it too, usually I can't get my camera out fast enough.

Great pictures and report. I also love the crispy honey chicken at Yak & Yeti.

Thanks! Yak and Yeti is one of my new favorite places, which is good because I never really had a favorite Animal Kingdom eatery.

Thursday:
We went back to the Magic Kingdom to hit everything we didn’t do on Tuesday. Some memorable moments from that day were me getting SOAKED on Splash Mountain…despite my rain jacket and hood pulled completely over my face. I finally won Buzz Lightyear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At Dream Along with Mickey the kids next to us were priceless, and were so into the show it made me tear up a few times.

We had lunch at the usual Pinnochio’s. While I was looking for a table, a family in the Small World room spotted me desperately searching for a table, and said “We’re leaving” and were nice enough to even wipe off the table for us. They got my Disney gold star of the day.

That evening we ate at the Wave in the Contemporary. Really a cool place for an adults dinner! The prices weren’t outrageous (but we didn’t care, we had the Meal Plan!) And the atmosphere was really cool. On our way back to our car at the TTC, we got to see Hallowishes again (music and all) from where the big riverboat loads. *Excellent place to view MK fireworks not in the park! And they do pipe in the music so you can hear it as well.

This was a funny picture of me from that day, I was the only adult who wanted their picture trying to take the sword from the stone.

Friday:

EPCOT Day! By this time the crowds had picked up (I assume from being a holiday weekend?) and EPCOT was CRAZY busy. I have never seen it so crowded. We did Spaceship Earth first (this was the first time I had seen it since the refurb.) Over all I was okay with it, I loved the computer touch screen program at the end. It was too funny! I am sad to say though I missed the Jeremy Irons narration.

After that we did Soarin, and I had some very rude guests behind us in line. I was so glad we got separated in loading. I was pretty mad at them, and for me to be mad at Disney takes a LOT. But I was quickly revived by our awesome CM Chris at loading, who let us wait to be in the first row. We had a great chat with him, and he was a great Disney CM. On Soarin we sat next to a group of older ladies who were flat out hilarious. Every time we went over something they would say “Lift up your feet!” or “Watch Out!” When they weren’t commenting they were laughing. It made my Disney day. They were so fun! After that we went over to the Universe of Energy (which I had never done before.) It was very interesting. And we made lots of SNL Celebrity Jeopardy jokes to ourselves during the pre-show.

Illuminations was awesome as usual. The new LED screens on the Earth globe were so CLEAR! You could see the presentation on the globe so much better than before.

Oh, I forgot dining…We had breakfast at the POP that morning (which was crazy as usual.) and we had Dinner at the Rose and Crown in England. I didn’t really know what to expect, but it was really good! Plus I got to have my YOMD blue glow martini.

(There were a TON of people in front of the display, so this was the best shot I could get of the entrance.)
