my wife and i have talked about this several times and are now making plans. i work with the govt. and getting close to retirement she is an RN. so our plan is to move to orlando , where i can get a job in security and she can do the same as a nurse with disney. we have the plan laid out now just to put it in action is all thats left. and also since we already live in the south weather is not a problem however ,traffic might be though since we live in a town with a population of about 900. that will take some getting used to.:D

My wife and I half joke about moving down and be comming cast members. Me in imagineering and she wants to work in the confectionary. The whole hurricane thing freaks us out a bit. Here in Kansas the tornados are at most a mile wide, last a minute or two, and not too frequent, a three hundred mile wide storm that lasts all day no thanks!

We thought about it and were even looking at houses! Then I realized the enclosures around all the pools were to keep the gators out... Then I changed my mind. We still discuss getting a winter home somewhere in Florida in the distant future.

Not crazy at all.I live in NY state and have wanted to move to Florida ever since I was little.Way before I even went there. I still today would love to move to Florida someday, and live somewhere close enough to WDW to be able to go there whenever I wanted. Hopefully someday.

I always said I wanted to move to Orlando, but didn't seriously consider it until I realized I was looking forward to the weather more than the Disney.

I don't think you're crazy, but I do think you should have a better reason than Disney to move. The thrill wears off pretty fast. I still love theme parks, but I always have. That won't change. But the, "Ooh, Haunted Mansion!" and "Wow! Spider Man!" thing wears off. Really. After that, it's just regular life. But it's regular life WITH NO SNOW!!!!!!!

I knew I wouldn't be at the parks all the time and purposely moved far enough away that I don't have to deal with tourist stuff all the time. But if you plan to be in the parks a lot (and some people are!) move somewhere close to the parks.

Good luck!

Lol, the enclosures would not stop a gator. They're just screens. :)

They're there to keep kids from falling in, to prevent crap from falling in the pool and to keep bugs out. I still get the occasional lizard because the rubber things under the doors break and I got sick of repairing them. My cat kills them. The great thing is no screens on the sliding glass door...the whole back is screened. Just open those doors wide. :D

A pool is really nice to have in the summer. Mine is small. I can't do laps, really. But I can swim some. And I can sit in the alcove or on the steps. When it is hot, but you are tired of hibernating, a pool is wonderful. :)

The thought may sound intriguing at first, but like luv said, it does wear off quickly. I would factor in other things before moving - not just for Disney. Crimes rates in Orlando are one of the highest in the country (more prominent in certain areas), jobs are scarce (unless you're ok with a min. wage job), traffic is pretty horrid at certain times of the day, cost of living isn't exactly cheap, and yeah... The novelty does and will wear off once you go every so often, trust me. For those that plan on moving purely for Disney, I won't convince you otherwise, just make sure you secure a job before making the move.

I think it would be very difficult to find anyone on here that would say you are crazy. I think just about any one of us would love to be in short driving distance to wdw.

I live in Lake Worth just south of WPB. Moved here from CT over 20 years ago. Have to say we love it. The east coast of Fl is cooler than the west coast we get those sea breezes off the Atlantic ocean. Palm Beach County is also the most expensive one to live in. West coast of Florida is hotter and rainier and see's more tropical weather. Being 3 hour from Disney is the best and you can't beat those FL resident discounts! I would try making a few trips down a couple of weeks at a time during different seasons. As much as we love it, it is not for everyone! Also Orlando being inland does get very hot in the summer and cold in the winter. They have days where it gets in the low 30's over night in winter!

My partner and I talk about moving down there all the time. I don't know if I could handle the summer heat, though. But mainly, I couldn't leave my family, and I don't think he could leave his either. We have a HUGE family, between the 2 of us, and we'd just miss them too much. It is awfully tempting, though, to be that close to Disney World... that's the only reason we'd consider it.

This year, the PDD (Post-Disney Depression) has been especially hard... so much so, that we're seriously considering a return trip in October. It would be our first time going twice in 1 year. I'm a little nervous that there'd be no going back from that, once we started that trend. LOL We certainly can't afford it... but what's money got to do with it? ;)

I am moving to Jacksonville, FL towards the end of the year. While Disney is not the main reason I am moving, it is a motivator. Jacksonville is just far enough away that I won't be able to just hop in my car and go for a few hours (it's just over 2 hours away) so hopefully the magic will still retain as I will still kind of have to plan for trips, but I'll be able to go more frequently. I'm just not a winter kind of gal and up here in Maine, we have SUPER cold snowy winters. I just felt this winter that I was sick of it and ready to move someplace warm. I am ALWAYS cold, even in the summer here so I always have a sweatshirt with me at all times, even in 80 degree weather. People go inside for a break from the heat and to cool off and think it's nice. I go inside for a break from the heat and within 5 minutes my hoodie is on and I've got goosebumps! I'm not made for cold weather!!

It's a lot cheaper to go home to visit family than it is to go to Florida. Family puts you up for free. :D

(Unless you're my sister, in which case you have the best of all worlds, lol.)

I agree that Disney being the big reason should not be enough. Unfortunately there are too many people who use Walt Disney World as a very literal escape and move to Florida thinking they can maintain the escape. I think its important to consider the role of a single place because while things may be fine now it would be terrible for Disney to be masking something more that will not be resolve with more Disney.

*sigh* My husband and I always kid and joke about it. Being so close to Disney would be amazing. We seriously curled up on the couch and watched our cell phone videos of the Electric Parade and The Magic, Memories and You (we were there the very last night it played), and Wishes! And just sighed. I miss it so much. And my son turning to me mid parade, jumping up and down going "Mommy I LOVE this parade!!!!" face glowing from the lights.

On the other hand, almost all our family is in CO/WY and they're the main reason we're here in the first place. I grew up in the military, moving all over with no family for years and I really wanted my kids to live near their grandparents. Also....FL heat is sickening. I am NOT made for that kind of heat/humidity. I ALSO worry about Disney losing some of it's magic being able to go several times a year.
I have lived in FL my whole life and WDW has always played a big in it. The magic still happens. It may sound weird, but it is true for a lot of us. Keep taking your son to Disney and he will have the same feelings as you as he grows up. Take the grandparents too! Magic is magic after all.

We presently live 70 miles due south of Disney, but when/if we were to move (we'd like to be a little closer to either of the coasts) we would make the drive-time of less than 1.5 hours to Disney the first priority in picking a spot. We had lived in West Palm Beach (Wellington) in 1989 for about 2 years (loved it!) but WDW is a little too far of a drive from West Palm for us for a day trip. Our daughter and almost 9 year old granddaughter live here also so our second consideration for a move would be schooling for our granddaughter.
If we did not have rental property in RI we would only go back there once a year to see family. But as it is now we go back about 3 or 4 times depending on our business. If you wanted to move to Florida and your wife is not ready to retire yet Health Care is still one of the few industries that is always looking for qualified staff anywhere. The real estate market has hit bottom and is creeping up now, but there are still lots of good values here.
As a Florida resident, or DVC owner, you can get the Annual Pass and go everyday if you want!
I live about 3 hours away. Would have no problem going to WDW for dinner and a ride every week! Just to be there.
