My EPCOT tribute

Hey everyone! Been awhile since I've actually put up a post, but I've been busy with something! I've always loved the original EPCOT. The rides were so unique and special (as most people feel on here). And being a designer, I've always been drawn to their logos. So I wanted to create a set of posters dedicated to each original pavillion by indirectly using the original logos in some way. I'm pretty happy with my results, and I wanted to share them with everyone. I call the set "Experimental Poster Compositions of Tomorrow." These posters are modern day interpretations of the great Future World attractions of yesterday. Taking on a minimalistic style, each focuses on the main ideas and foundations of the pavillions they represent.

I never thought of this. Good idea! I obviously have larger versions, but I posted smaller ones on Flickr to avoid people stealing my work. There are links to purchase prints on each one, but I know i can't link to them here, so I'll let you find them yourself.

wow looks excellent!

I am a fan of the vector poster look. I know despite looking simple how hard it is! Which programs did you use and how did you get the aged look?

I love the use of elements such as the plant motif from the original logo used in the "field" of the Land pavilion.

My only critiscism is that I don't feel the computer represents Communicore well. How about a vector of Tom Morrow?

I agree with Lunamis that the computer doesn't feel quite right to represent Communicore, but I can't think of anything else to suggest taking its place.

I didn't know about him. The Communicore poster was the hardest one for me to do, and was the last one I finished after I recovered data from my crashed hard drive (another story in itself). It was hard for me to discern a common theme for Communicore and how it differs from Innoventions now. I thought about using SMRT-1, but I wasn't sure how universally recognized that would be, and it was only one part of the pavillion. So I went with what I found on Wikipedia: "Having debuted at the dawn of the modern computer era, the emphasis throughout CommuniCore was primarily on educating the public about computers." Sounded good enough to me since that was the attraction I was least familiar with. I figure since computers really encompass all of our technology, communication, and networking that it would be a fitting symbol.
Also for those that were curious, the binary on the computer reads "communicore, disney, epcot".

Which programs did you use and how did you get the aged look?

I use Rhino to draw the vectors, Illustrator to color it, and Photoshop to finish 'em off. The aged look is acheived with concrete textures.

Maybe you could put them on t-shirts at zazzle.com (although they might get pulled for copyright issues, zazzle is very tricky about that)

Well, originally I was just going to stick with the Spaceship Earth one as representing EPCOT as a whole. That's why it has a different colored border. I thought it being the park's centerpiece would represent EPCOT as most people know it. But now that you mention it, I may actually do one that encompasses all of the pavillions and the World Showcase. I've got it in my head now.
I've also started thinking about maybe the rest of WDW and do one for each big attraction. We'll see on that though. I need to see if these original ones start to pick up steam first.

Very awesome work! I love every single one of them. I can also understand the difficulty with figuring out something for CommuniCore, and glad you didn't just ignore it. I feel like it's the most underrated pavilion. I find it interesting that the only logo that you don't extrapolate a poster design from is Wonders of Life. I've always kind of felt they were kind of lazy with the design of that logo and went a bit too literal with it. Did you have any similar thoughts on that?

Yeah, I know I said before that I love all the logos and find each one interesting...but the WoL logo is just ugly. It's the oddball of the group and doesn't fit in with the simplicity of the rest of them. Originally each poster was going to have the pavillion as well since those are unique in their own way, so after I dropped that idea I decided to revisit it for the WoL poster. The DNA helix in front of the pavillion was great, and it kept with the geometric nature of the rest of my designs. And the carbon hexagons kind of hinted back at the logo's inscribed pentagon.

I'm not sure I'd go quite so far as to say it's ugly, but it's certainly the oddball out. It doesn't have a rounded design like the others, just copies the Da Vinci image (the name of it escapes me at the moment) instead of using an abstract shape to elegantly convey the topic, and is just simply 100% blatantly beat-you-over-the-head obvious about it. It seems like it would have been relatively simple enough for them to create a lovely logo evoking a DNA helix.

As for the pavilions themselves, I've always thought that once I'd gained the appropriate skill, the silhouette of most of those structures are distinctive enough that they could be incorporated into some really cool EPCOT graphics. Even with the tougher ones like Energy and Motion, just with a strategically placed single color highlight, it would very effectively convey the pavilion.
