...well maybe not destroyed but it feels like it. For some reason I think I have a virus where it won't let me connect the internet. The computer says my dsl line is connected but the internet won't come up! I tried to see if it was just a bad cord by hooking up to the cord that is used for the computer in our living room but my computer still didn't work! Does anyone know what is wrong!? I really need help.... :veryconfu :veryconfu :veryconfu

My mom's puter is doing the same thing, actually. We had a heavy electrical storm the other night, so that might have had something to do with it. Anyhoo, I've troubleshot hers to death, so it's being looked at by a professional now.

Have you called your ISP to make sure the connection is ok? I also called the manufacturer of her Ethernet card to have them confirm there was nothing wrong with it.

I have cable internet access not DSL, but the issues should be the same.

1. You can use IPCONFIG /release and then IPCONFIG /renew from a dos prompt as previously said. To get to a dos prompt go to your START menu, choose RUN type CMD and hit enter. If you type IPCONFIG by itself and hit enter it should look something like this:
____________________
Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Belkin
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.5
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1
____________________
This will tell you your IP address for the internet, etc...if it is not filled out or is filled in with 0's your could still be connected to the modem, but the modem is not receiving an internet connection. The IP address here starts with a 192 since it is going through not only a modem, but also a router to share the internet connection with other computers.

This brings me to my questions/responses:

Are you running your internet connection through a router to share it with other computers in your house? If so, try unplugging the router, counting to about 10 and then plugging it back in. If the DSL line has given you a modem you might try doing the same for that (this happens on occasion with my cable modem).

At the least, call your DSL provider. I am sure they will have a great answer.

How old is the DSL modem? We were having similar problems and I called my provider. Once I got a new DSL modem my problems were solved.

Are both computers on a DSL line? If so it could just be the service itself and not your computer. Happens a lot with DSL and Cable lines.

Try resetting modem

Have you tried restting the modem. I was having a problem with my cable line and there is a small hole in the back of the modem that you put the end of a paperclip in. Hold for a count of 10 and release. This is supposed to clear any 'errors' in the modem. I hope it works for your DSL line. (you could even do the 'ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew' after this just to make sure everything is clear.

Be careful if you do this. With the modems my company uses if you re set it has to be replaced because there is no way to recalibrate them. Call the company and see if they are having problems and they can test the connection from the office.
