My cat is missing

Hi there, my cat that hubby and I have had for 10 years is missing. Now I can't sleep. It is the strangest thing, he just isn't around anywhere. Hubby feed him this moring and that is the last anyone remembers seeing him. We did have the plumbers here today to do work on the upstairs (we are putting in an addtion on our 2nd floor). I don't know if one of them let him out. The strange thing is he is rather a scardy cat and never goes outside, never even trys. If we carry him outside he hates it and is all clingly. It was really nosiey here today, I don't know if that scared him away.

So no it is night and I am used to him sleeping on our bed, or sitting in the window looking outside. And he is no where to be found. All I can think of is our poor cat outside cold and lost. He never goes out, he wouldn't be able to find his way home for the world. I do admit since I have 2 kids now he is rather low on the todum poll, but I swear if he comes back I will be more loving to him from now on.

Sorry, I can't sleep and needed to complain to someone. (and baby PhD is going to wake me up in a few hours to feed her anyway.)

The house just feels strange with out him.

Have you checked all the rooms in the house? Could the plumbers have closed him up some place that you haven't checked? Maybe the noises scared him and he's hiding somewhere.

If you can't find him, we have one you can have.....

We have looked all over the house, upstairs (the new not yet finished but closed in addition) main floor and downstairs. We only really missed him when it was 9:00 and he wasn't bugging hubby to feed him. There is open flooring upstairs, but it doesn't look distrubed at all. I went and opend and closed every door in the house and looked under the bed. He might of hid while we had people over tonight, but he comes out at night. That is why I got up to look for him. Normally when I can't sleep he is all over me.

Normally when he is shut up somewhere he bangs at the door and howls.

poor guy, I wonder if I will ever see him again.

I was geting rather ed at him for clawing at the couch.

Thanks for the support Scott. No thanks on the replacement cat. I thought I was ready to get rid of him, but he is family. Speaking of family I have a few member who are very allergic to cats and won't come over to my house. So I have vowed not to get a new one once we don't have one. The stupid thing is most likely they still won't come over since we had a cat.

I don't know how to explain this to little PhD. That is what really sucks.

Well, I wouldn't write him off just yet. I think he will show up again. I know our cat has a really good tendency to not be found when he wants to be left alone.

Let us know if and when he shows up!

Thanks I hope so. (even though if you asked me yesterday i would of not admitted it.)

Oh well. I guess I will try to get some sleep. He has never missed a meal before. (he has this interal sense of when it is feeding time, rather freaky actually.)

Maybe your cat is with a neighbor. The same thing happened to my dog a few years back. We had construction going around the house and she just hid away at our neighbors for 2 days. It doesn't hurt to ask. Good luck finding your cat...I know how important pets can be.

I'm very sorry to hear this and hope you find your cat. If he doesn't come home for a couple days and the nieghbors don't know anything, call the newspaper and put up signs. Keep us updated and try to get some sleep! Good luck and I hope you find PhD Cat!

I feel for you, I'm a cat person. I had my cats( brother and sister) for 20 years, I remember several times when they "escaped" even if for only a few minutes it was scary. I would keep checking the front and back door, hopefully if he got outside he stayed close.

hope you find the cat soon. We had some construction done on the house & our dog fraked from all the nose & strangers. She hid in the car & would bite anyone who came near her (shes 11 y/o & is very set in her ways). Give it a little time. he just may show up when you least expect it.

Leave a blanket outside (that smells like home) and a bowl of food.

We had a cat missing one time and it turned out she was shut inside a dresser drawer!!!

I am sure you are right- that the construction scared him away. I wouldn't write him off yet. He may still come back. My godmother's cat disappeared last winter and turned up a couple of months later out of the blue, skinny but without a scratch. A side note, I commend you for not declawing him. Most people don't realize it's actually a series of amputations at the joints of the toes (illegal in many countries) and not a simple removal of a nail bed. At our shelter, I've not seen a single cat returned for scratching, but many returned for personality changes and behavioral problems following declaw. Kind of a freak thing but it happens more frequently than you would think. Anyway, now, being outside, your cat is that much safer having his claws. I'm sure he'll be fine.

When he comes back, PM me for ideas to keep your couch a little safer.

Best of luck to you.

I'm glad you told me about the declawing, so I could pass it on to my mom. :) Kitty Kitty was spared, but unfortunately, the 2 that belong to my sister in law, were not. :(

Any ideas on keeping the couch safe from a 2 and a half year old... human child? :lookaroun

Hope your cat comes home safe and soon, PhD. :)

Thank you everyone for all your kind replies and good suggestions.

Here is the update.

I couldn't sleep but I went back to bed around 2:00 am and did finally fall asleep. At 3:00 am Mr. PhD heard something and woke up. The cat was sracthing at the door from the stair that we put in to shut off the upstairs during constuction. He was upstairs the whole time. I don't know where, since we searched everywhere and there isn't much up there. The only thing I can think off is that he was in the floors, since they ripped them up in the bathroom to put in the plumbing. It was soo weired because this cat has NEVER missed a meal in his life time if someone is around to feed him. He eats at 6:00 am when Mr. PhD gets up to go to work and 9:00 at night and both times he starts bugging us an hour before. Once my mother baby sat for Little PhD shorty after she was born, and we forgot to mention feeding the cat. He bugged and bothered her for 2 hours before she figured it out. He never pays any attention to her otherwise.

So after he woke me up at 3:00 am I couldn't fall back asleep thinking baby PhD would want to eat as soon as I did fall back asleep. I didn't get back to sleep until around 5:00 am and baby sleep until 6:00. That is the most she has sleept though the night so far. Too bad I didn't too!

Here is the really strange part. I can't find him now. I haven't seen him all morning since waking up at 8:00. We locked him out of our room around 5:00 becuase he was bugging us. Mr. PhD feed him at 6:00 and he ate it. But can't find him anywhere. :lookaroun

PhD cat is one strange cookie!

Glad you found your cat. I don't own a cat but we cat sat for my mother once.....never again.

We brought the cat over to our house. The first morning, the cat disappeared and we didn't think much about it. My wife said "I'll find her" as I left for work. It's a 30 minute drive to work. I almost get to work and my wife still hasn't found the cat. We start to get worried that it got out of the house. She searched everywhere. She even started looking outside. So, I turn around and head home to help search. Another 30 minute drive.

Now, my major concern was what do I tell me mother. I lost her cat after only one day. She is going to kill me.

I return home and start tearing the house apart. I looked under the bed, under the sofa, on top of cabinets, in closets, everywhere.

Finally, I started lifted the sofa and there she was... There is a metal bar under the sofa she was seating on. So you couldn't see her looking under the sofa as she was not on the ground.

So after over 1 1/2 hours we found that cat. So I know what you went through.

  Well, it's funny to us that own cats. One of the worst things you can do to a cat is to take it to someone else's home to stay. Cats are very freakable on upsetting the routine and they will disappear. That's why you can leave a cat for a week at home by himself and he'll be fine. Then when you come home, he's your best friend for 15 minutes when he acts like he missed you, but then he shakes the cobwebs loose and goes back to his "p!ss on you" attitude! :)

That is soooo true and we too learned it the hard way. When we 1st got the cat we took it too my brothers house to wacth him when we went out of town. He freaked out (it didn't help my brother had young kids, to this day he hates these kids and they are now teenagers!) Anyway they couldn't find him and he was hidding behind the entertainment center. He stayed there the whole weekend and didn't eat, or ________ the whole 3 days. So know we know he can go 3 days without food or water.

From then on we just left him at home when we go on vacation and send someone over to feed him. It normally works out well.

I warned the plumbers who didn't see him at all yesterday and said they will not let him out of the house. No sign of him. I think I might check behind the entertainment center! If he is in the floor upstairs he is getting the living day lights scared out of him since they are currenlty using power tools.

Not always the case. I've never forgotten this and I was 5 years old when it happened. My family and I went on a weekend trip leaving the cat home alone, but with food and water. By the time we arrived home, Baby (the cat's name) was on our front porch just sitting there. My mom went towards the cat to pick her up, but Baby hissed at my mom. All of a sudden she turned around and stuck her tail up in the air (as if mooning us), hissed one more time and took off. We never saw her after that. She was very mad at us and held a grudge...

You have been dissed by a cat. (one named Baby no less!)

How funny. (and a little sad, but I guess it was Baby's own fault.)

Still no sign of the cat today, but he isn't upstairs. I called Mr. PhD at work and he said that he (Coby AKA PhD cat) wanted to but he wouldn't let him. My guess is somewhere in the basement. I think I will go look.
