My brief review of HKDL

I went to HKDL on Monday, January 26th (Gong Hei Fat Choi!)

First some notes, this is not a full report as I did not experience every attraction. I would have liked to, but I was with 2 friends from the local area and we started at about 1PM, with Chinese New Year crowds to contend with. Also, after my wonderful experience in HK, I am definitely planning a return trip in the near future!

In a way, I enjoyed the fact that the park was busy, albeit very cold (to a Floridian who's been in baking hot Manila for several weeks). It was about 50 degrees with a bad wind chill. The crowds made it seem more like a real park experience I think than if I would have gone on a slow day with no one around. I did find it interesting that my HK friends I was with noted that most of the people they saw were mainlanders, not sure how she knew besides the language, but I trusted her judgement.

There have been many discussions about HKDL being "small", and to me, seeing the park, it is a bit of a misnomer. Although size-wise it may in fact be smaller than some of the other Disneyland parks, it does not feel small, but it does feel incomplete. In other words, it has enough space to immerse you in an area without feeling like you're right next to another land.

Adventureland is very good, however it's also the one with IMO the most glaring lack of attractions. There's plenty of great immersive theming, but not much to back it up with. You're going on an Adventure, but only a treehouse, jungle cruise and a stage show to satisfy you. It's not enough. A Pirates or Indy attraction is really needed here, or even a tiki room done properly could help. The jungle cruise was fun, but other than the new scene at the end, I wasn’t overly impressed by it. It seems like it should have more since it does seem to cover a larger area. The skipper (English speaking) was also a disappointment, not very funny and a bit boring.

Tomorrowland does have enough of attractions to keep you occupied for a while but my issue with this land is the lack of a cohesive theme. It feels much more thrown together than the other Tomorrowlands. It doesn't scream futuristic or retro-future like the others. It's difficult to explain, but I think I'd call it just a generic futuristic land, nothing that stands out as special. Space Mountain and Buzz are very good, so much better than currently at WDW.

Fantasyland is nice, although it feels odd with the placement of everything. It seems like they went out of their way to make Small World a very important looking attraction, complete with its own special area. It was however nice to see everything looking brand new and operating properly.

One note about those things missing, such as the "mountains". IMO, one look at the landscape surrounding the park and it's easy to see why that may not be a good idea. There are very real, and very, very high mountains (at least to a Floridian) surrounding HKDL which would inevitably give a different perspective to whatever "mountains" Disney would want to build. Space Mountain is a different kind of mountain and doesn't fit into the same criteria to me.

I do enjoy the area that it is in. There are definitely things you can notice here that you won’t see at any other parks, the surroundings give it a much different feel.

For example, I really like climbing up through the treehouse and getting views like this:

HongKong391.jpg

I love that picture. When you're standing there, it truly looks like the jungle cruise has a massive jungle to go through. This also takes me back to several years ago when I heard that Universal may have considered building a park in HK. Somehow I was thinking that would have been the perfect area for an "Isla Nublar" Jurassic Park theme, but this is a Disney report, so I'll stop there

We watched the fireworks which I thought were very well done, different, but still what I've come to expect.

I am excited for what may be coming next for the park. I've heard they are starting to see more crowds and hopefully in a few years we can call it as good as any other Disneyland park in the world.

Thanks for the report!

HK is on track(as far as I know) to get a Pirates E-ticket attraction in the future, which is supposedly a cross between Splash Mountain and Pirates.

I'm surprised you weren't impressed by the Jungle Cruise in Hong Kong. I've seen plenty of videos and pictures, and I think it looks incredible. So much more detail and figures than our Jungle Cruise.

Well, I haven't been on the DL version, but the WDW version has some things I really enjoy that are missing from the HK version, like the temple type of interior sections, and the dancing natives, the waterfall you pass under, etc.

Yes, they do have some cool elements to be sure, but since it seemed like it was a larger version that they'd have more stuff.

True. Our's is the only version with the indoor temple. I just like the fact that their river is actually...well a river. Our's is more like a stream. But I agree that missing Sweitzer Falls is a big let down.

Isn't HK a GREAT city? I can't wait to go back (likely fall 2010).

In a way, I enjoyed the fact that the park was busy, albeit very cold (to a Floridian who's been in baking hot Manila for several weeks). It was about 50 degrees with a bad wind chill. It's freezing in Florida again if that makes you feel any better. When I was at HKDL it was sunny and in the mid-90s with humidity that made O-Town seen tolerable!

I would guess it's pretty easy to tell the difference between Mainlanders based on language and things like dress and the way they carry themselves. HK is world class cosmopolitan ... but right across the 'border' it's a different story.

There have been many discussions about HKDL being "small", and to me, seeing the park, it is a bit of a misnomer. Agreed. It is by no means a tiny park. But because there's so much missing and even so much space, it does feel smaller than it is.

I

I actually disagree, although I know where you are coming from. A-land is the largest version size-wise in the world ... and I think with Lion King (so much better than DAK's version) and Jungle River Cruise you have two major E-Tix. I also love having the Treehouse across the rivers on the island. The design was really kewl in that it combines them almost in a Rivers of America type way, but takes it a step further since the JC boats traverse some of the territory. You'll never see a Tiki Room ... the Tahitian Terrace (excellent food) takes much of the theming cues from DL's Tiki Room Lanai.

Of course, the next big attraction scheduled is a Mansion and a whole Pirates mini-land (that would actually double the size of A-Land) is a strong likelihood as next additions. They would be world-class versions.

I

WDI was going for a sci-fi cartoon/Jetsons type vibe for the land. I do think it works on that level, but like much of the park there just isn't even to carry it through to a filling conclusion. I'd say the theme is much more cohesive than say MK where it started out as the Future That Never Was and died as soon as it got to the TTA ... and has since been ruined with SGE and MILF in place of AE and Timekeeper, both of which fit.

Fantasyland is nice, although it feels odd with the placement of everything. It seems like they went out of their way to make Small World a very important looking attraction, complete with its own special area. It was however nice to see everything looking brand new and operating properly.

I don't think the placement of Small World is all that different from DL or DLP really ... it is set off, but that'e because it's outside the berm and because they want the facade to draw your attention. I think this version is the best going right now, although I love DLP's too.

What also isn't readily apparent is the fact that both the show buildings for Pooh and PhilharMagic (supposedly Buzz Lightyear too, although I don't know that for certain) have enough room left for another attraction ... that's fitting since Little Mermaid and Peter Pan rides got the budget axe well into the process.

The Fantasia Gardens character greet as well as the huge Storybook Theater also make F-land have a different feeling than other versions.

I find the locale of HKDL to be absolutely stunning ... the colors were so vibrant ... the greens of the mountains with the blue sky and radiant sunshine sparkled off he castle and Space Mountain ... just a very kewl looking place.

But yeah, you won't see the typical Disney mountains OR DAK's Forbidden Mountain make an appearance in HKDL because they wouldn't look right with the real mountains as a backdrop ... now say a Pirates Mountain where the finale drops you out of a flaming skull out of the show building ... that may very well happen ... and if Frontierland gets built there are strong rumors of a Grizzly Peak type mountain that would feature a EE type coaster system ... those would fit better because they wouldn't have to look so natural (I have doubts about the latter, but it is picking up speed in rumors in the online community!)

For example, I really like climbing up through the treehouse and getting views like this:

It's a shame you didn't have more time to really experience the park ... I'd be interested to know what you did see and do and your thoughts since our community has very few members like ourselves who were fortunate enough to visit the newest MK of them all.

Yes, that's part of the reason I want to go back so badly, partially because HK is clearly an awesome place, and I do want to see more of HKDL.

Here are the attractions we went on:

Space Mountain
Buzz Lightyear
Winnie the Pooh
Its a Small World
Philharmagic
Festival of the Lion King
Tarzan's Treehouse (and the raft going there obviously)
Jungle Cruise

I agree that the Lion King show is much better than the one at AK, but I am honestly not a big fan of stage shows to begin with, so take that for what you will.

I know we missed a few unique things like Golden Mickeys, Autopia and Stitch Encounter, which I plan to see on the next visit. We didn't get on the train either, although with the cold temperatures and wind we didn't really want to.

Yeah, one of my main disappointments with my Home Park is that WDW has no interesting visual landscapes around it. Disneyland and HKDL have mountains, TDR has Tokyo Bay.

:(

thanks
