Mr. Spell is working!

Never did get to see him. I wonder if they're even still working on him or if they just gave up. Maybe it was a pre-screening for "Limited Time Magic". :p Yea... I went there. :)

He was removed due to an arrangement between the WDCo and Luxo. They objected to it due to copyright infringement.

Disney should have just bought Luxo outright for a couple of hundred bucks and a sandwich. How many Luxo lamps do you still see around? This was incredibly short-sided of an out-of-touch company (that probably won't be in business much longer anyway). I can only imagine they were trying to hold the WDCo and Pixar hostage and WD wouldn't play ball (and rightfully so).

Edit: Philharmagician beat me to it.

No ... I believe Luxo Jr. was ultimately shelved because of a lawsuit between Disney and the parent company of Luxo, Luxo AS. The animatronic was listed as part of that lawsuit. The settlement wasn't disclosed but my guess is that technical issues aside, you won't ever see him again unfortunately.

Actually, no.

Luxo has been around a long long time, and their lamps are iconic, and they are globally recognized, winning many awards for ergonomic task lighting. They have been around longer than Disney, (75+) years. They were recently picked up by Herman Miller in a design partnership (big mid century modern furniture manufacture). They are up their with Eames, Noguchi, and Knoll. I myself have at least 3 Luxo Lamps between my office, studio and house, they are well made, one of them has a manufacture date of 1953.

What Disney tried to do is offer a cheap knock off product using the Luxo name with it's boxed set and it ed off Luxo because it didn't meet their quality standards. Disney of any company should have known better, and got slapped down as a result.

Weird I'm sure I heard some chatter on corners of the internet that Operations was complaining about it causing traffic issues, and Jim Hill recently mentioned it in podcast form as well, don't remember if it was one with @lentesta or @RSoxNo1.

Remember the days when anything being added to the parks meant that Stitch was going to be involved? Hehe...good times. BLECH!
Wasn't there a rumor a while ago that space mountain was going to be turned into stitch mountain? I think I saw that once, and I was laughing that they could come up with something that stupid!
They did plan a Stitch overlay for Disneyland's SM but not WDW. (Thank GOODNESS!!!!) They even made CONCEPT ART FOR IT!

I've been in architecture for well over 30 years and have never NOT had a Luxo lamp on my drafting tables (yes, I also use CAD) at work or home. :)

That was the rumor because that was the same time Pixar was being sued for using "Luxo" by the lighting manufacturer, but then there were some conversations that operations pulled the plug.

I like strobe lights.

Thanks for the info to all. I thought this had been disproved a rumor much like the rights of the Chinese Theatre. Guess I didn't read all through that thread when it was so popular.

This is not an attack on the OP.
I find it sad that WDW is gotten so stale that these are the things we get excited about.
Let's hope that Star Wars Land, Cars Land or hell, even Avatar Land gets built.
Wow us again Disney.

Wdwmagic, where good news is really bad news.

Spot on.

I am cringing, waiting for the day when a thread starts,

TomorrowLand TOILET UNCLOGGED!

Yes, with exclamation mark. And we all run in to go OOH and AAH.

To me the Luxo ASA lawsuit being the reason for removal was nothing more than a rumor, but you don't see Luxo on the Pixar site anymore. However Luxo is still seen in Pixar movies. In the end the copyright infringment lawsuit was dropped by Luxo ASA so that would push me more towards Operations pulling the plug because of crowd flow or Luxo needs a strobe light because he simply does not work.

It would appear that you did not understand the link you posted. Luxo didn't just drop their lawsuit against Disney. Luxo reached an "amicable settlement" with Disney. The details of the settlement are private. However, you can be sure that Luxo got everything for which they asked since Disney was clearly in the wrong.

I thought that Luxo Jnr was made using the same or similar technology as Hopper in 'It's Tough to be a Bug'.
He broke aswell didn't he or did they get him working again?

Man, I just love to watch the video. Gutted they got rid of him.

And I bet he's still there behind those doors, rotting away.
