Mousekeeping?

Couple of questions--one, when you leave a daily tip for the housekeepers at a WDW resort, do you leave it in an envelope, or just on the dresser? And, we all call them "mousekeeping" on here, but if you do leave an envelope for them, do you address it to Mousekeeping? I don't want to upset anyone working at WDW!

I found some Disney candy canes @ Dollar General so this past Christmas trip, I left a couple of those along with my Mousekeeping envelopes. I took some of the candy canes with me to the parks each day, too, and left them for wait staff at the restaurants.

We made our own envelopes, too, with stickers from the dollar store, and I wrote different sayings on them, like "Thanks, Mousekeeping" or "You're the Best", and then "Good-Bye" on the one for the last day. I used red & black markers, and tried to make it look cartoony amd already had the money in them before we left, too.

I posted a while back for someone that was flying with small children to take all their envelope making supplies on the plane as an activity to pass the time.

We left the printed envelopes as well with $5 each day for the four of us. By the time we left 6 days later, DD's carry on was half-filled with neat towel animals mousekeeping left for us. When you consider what a Disney vacation costs, 35 bucks for the week is pretty cheap. On the other hand, that $35 probably bought enough gas for the mousekeeper to get to work for the week. (At least it did last year before gas was $3.50/gal.!).

When we travel we leave the housekeeping or mousekeeping tip daily ($3-$5 a day). We know some people who leave it at the end of their stay. We feel that if we leave it daily we know the person who cleans the room that day will get it instead of at the end of the stay in case the that person is off on the day we check out. There are also some really great designs on Creative DIsigns where you can print up a really cute envelope to leave your tip in.:)

I have always just left cash on one of the pillows after we throw the bed together on our way out the door. That has always worked fine - it's unmistakable.

This is the same thing I've always done, so I assume that I learned it from my parents, although we never stayed a hotel together until I was
31. My mother must have told me before my first hotel stay in 1969.

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but I'm sure it will sound like that. The question I want to ask is why tip housekeeping?

Don't feel bad. I don't - and won't tip either. These folks are hired to clean rooms. They do it. They get paid for it. I'm already paying through the nose for a room that isn't a whole lot different than a comfort inn - but then people suggest I pay $2-$5 per day in addition to that? Nope, not today, not tomorrow, not ever. Period. If it's that big a deal to clean a room please give the choice of exchanging my own towels and making my own bed (which I do anyway), and I'll save my hard earned cash for my own needs.

Dammit dammit dammit I hope Mousekeeping strips both beds even if they're made, no disrespect to you or any other, friend, but I do not want to sleep between the same sheets that you did.... What possible constructive purpose does it serve for you to make the bed in a hotel room that you know a housekeeper is going to be in? If you want to show them respect by saving them work by making your bed, well, as mentioned I hope they're remaking it anyway. So show a little humanity instead and toss a couple bucks on the pillow... cheers m8 :D

Who said anything about making the bed for you? Of course they're going to strip the beds and do all that for you when I leave. Is that a service you or I should be expected to pay extra for? Nope.

"Housekeeping" isn't a charity, it's a required service that people are paid for. Why is there an implied obligation that the guest leave a tip because someone is doing their job?

Quite a few hotels (or rather their housekeeping staff) will ignore the bed if you make it. Even more (including Disney's) will leave your towels in the room if you hang them up.

So show a little humanity instead and toss a couple bucks on the pillow... cheers m8 :D

As I said - why should I tip someone for merely doing a job they're already paid a full wage to do? It doesn't make sense to me. As for "humanity" - when someone goes out of their way for me and goes above and beyond, I will gladly pay them something extra. I'm a good tipper where tips are merited. I've given staff $100/week for that kind of service (above and beyond what I was already paying). I just don't think housekeeping merits that kind of attention. If you do though, by all means tip all you want. I'm just expressing my opinion on the matter.

Honestly man, I just had this horrible image of Mousekeeping ignoring the bed you slept in, then subsequently made, and it being in that condition when the next guest arrived.

As some others have said, I've just acquired the notion that it is typical and expected form that one leaves a modest tip for the housekeeping staff. I also don't trash the room. If the housekeeper does a crappy job of taking care of the room, well I hide my valuables and tip accordingly. But, if they do a decent job of doing the stuff I'm on vacation to hopefully avoid doing, well I'm more than happy to pay them for that.
