More on Disney's Future

i think a new water park would be great as long as its NOT outside of wdw or disneyland. it would be stupid to build a disney water park in, lets say, texas. the only 2 disney destinations in america should be disneyland and wdw.

Future?

Rasulo had little to add about the lackluster performance by Hong Kong Disneyland, which opened in September of 2007, and failed to meet first-year attendance target of 5.6 million

Is Just me or Disneyland Hong Kong was open in 2006. So if it is Feb 2007 so it hasn't open and he is looking at Madame Leota's crystal Ball?

I was just reading a similare article in the Wall Street Journal. I would hate for Disney's future to be that of any other franchise. It just won't be the same. It would cheapen the whole thing.

It's about time they got the new ships rolling for the cruise line, maybe with more supply the prices will come down slightly, although that is probobly wishful thinking.

I agree. Hopefully more ships would bring the prices down somewhat. When they take one ship to CA for the summer, it makes it hard to get on the one left in Florida.

Disney will turn into Six Flags (not literally) if they keep adding more outside of the theme parks! It won't be special anymore. I used to really appreciate shopping in Best Buy when i had to drive to Houston to go there - now that it's in my town i don't appreciate it as much...

just my two cents.

shopping districts outside of the parks - yes.
hotels / resorts - maybe.
theme parks, water parks, small "immersive" parks... no.

notice how FEATURE ANIMATION is now going back to its "event" mode of 1 picture a year... or 1 picture every two years..... (talking longterm into the future, now)

The parks have a game of catch-up to play......

I am really getting sick of this mass branding that is going on. I could give it the benefit of the doubt before, but Disney itself has failed on this front. The Disney Store, DisneyQuest, etc. At what point will the MBA's spreadsheets be shown for the crap they are? SHORT TERM INTEREST DOES NOT TRANSLATE INTO LONG TERM GROWTH AND PROFIT. IT OFTEN COSTS YOU MUCH MORE IN THE LONG RUN. Since Disney has such a strong following, it need not grow right now. It needs to put workable, long-lasting maintenance and update systems into place and simply keep what it has looking good and adding equivalent things. New ventures have often failed in this Company and, right now, it is starting to get back on track. Not a time for risks that could damage repuation again.

I want a small business-oriented approach again. While corporate America revolts against that, it is the only way Disney will maintain power for a long time.

End rant.

I cannot agree more.

The MBAs need to get out of the way and Disney be what made them want to study it in the first place: a place of trust and true innovation. (Not simply "brand extensions"!)

I agree. I mean, if they had a smaller version of WDW or DL near many people in this country, wouldn't it take away from WDW and DL by people going to the smaller park instead? I mean think about it, why go all the way down to FLA just for WDW when you can have pieces of it near you. Atleast thats the logic I can see several people saying in the future if this were to happen.

"The company also was exploring alternatives to full-size theme parks, including “a smaller, deeply immersive park” that would offer consumers a more interactive experience at higher prices."

Sounds like Disney Quest. Didn't that already fail in Chicago?

Thank you! Been there, done that, didn't work.

I was wondering if the powers that be at Disney ever see this stuff? Do the people at Disney read these sites?? I agree with the the majority, other parks would take away from the great parks they already have, invest in what you have! (except for maybe a downtown disney/pleasure island area in Toronto Ontario that would be cool) If some could let me know that would be great!!

Living in Chicago and only going to Disney once a year is really tough, loving it so much, but its almost the anticipation that is such fun!! Places like DisneyQuest downtown never FELT like Disney, it was a giant arcade that happened to have the Disney logo on it. I cannot confirm this, but I believe that that overhead costs of having such a HUGE building in downtown Chicago really killed DisneyQuest, plus ESPN zone was right down the street. If you went to DQ during the day in the middle of the week, it was a ghost town, ESPN zone was always full of people.

Not that I'm saying its a good idea, but if Disney wants to expand into urban cities with "something," than it better FEEL like Disney. There is just something special (magical if you will :) ) of being in the parks, its just there. I don't think that any hotel or dining or whatever they might plan, would be able to capture it.

I don't normally post here, mostly lurk and read the discussions, but I really have to say something about this. Who is this Jay Rasulo and what is he smoking? Does this man have any kind of marketing experience? He keeps coming up with these ideas...and I have no idea what he is thinking.

I am a mother of two small children, and parents aren't going to want to spend more money to go to a local hotel. I agree with the majority of the posters' here, when they say it will take the magic out of a trip to any current Disney park. My children love the anticipation of going to Disney World, that's half the fun of it.

So Mr. Rasulo, if your listening, (I know your not...but), if you want to target families with young children: FOCUS ON THE MAGICAL BEGINNINGS PROMOTION!!!!! Keep it once a year or maybe twice (during the slow seasons). Focus on more toddler friendly things during this time. And most importantly...DISCOUNT, DISCOUNT, DISCOUNT! More families would come for a discounted vacation, than the hopes of winning a lanyard.

So, what will the future of Disney really be? A Disney-themed attraction at the corner of your street? ;)

No, but seriously. I already found they had enough resort before they started construction on Hong Kong Disneyland. Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney World Resort, Tokyo Disney Resort, and Disneyland Resort Paris made a perfect spread over the world... more resorts aren't necessary at all. Just make sure to build out the current resort to the ideal vacation place, before thinking about new locations.

What's next? Shop at your local Disney Supermarket?

I definitely agree. Thats why I think In-n-Out has succeeded. It is a slow growing company that puts more care and consideration in their current stores than franchising. I appreciate their burgers so much more because I need to fly 3,000 miles to eat at one.
