Classic Attraction in California and Florida Adding New Characters Inspired by Hit Film Franchise Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean

ANAHEIM, Calif. / ORLANDO, Fla. (Feb. 2, 2006) - - First the theme park attraction inspired the movie – now the movie is inspiring the attraction.

Pirates of the Caribbean, the classic Disney theme park adventure brought to the big screen in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, is adding new characters and features from the blockbuster entertainment franchise and debuting when the next adventure begins in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

Both the Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida will close the attraction in March to complete the updates in time for the opening of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest on July 7. The attraction will re-open at Disneyland on June 24 and in Florida's Magic Kingdom on July 7.

The attraction will feature the addition of two of Hollywood’s most infamous buccaneers, Captain Jack Sparrow and his nemesis Barbossa. Joining the wildest crew that ever sacked the Spanish Main, Captain Jack and Barbossa add an exciting new twist to the attraction’s original storyline as they race to be the first to claim a cache of plundered treasure.

"Successfully adding the popular characters from the Pirates of the Caribbean films with the mythology of our classic attraction is an example of Disney synergy and Walt Disney Imagineering at its finest," said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. "These additions will result in an exciting new chapter for the attraction and an unforgettable experience for our guests, giving them another reason to come and be a part of our continuing 50th anniversary celebration."

Woven into some of the attraction’s most memorable scenes, the rival swashbucklers will be seen interacting with some of the more familiar Audio-Animatronics buccaneers found inside the ride-thru adventure. Also making a guest appearance is the ghostly Davy Jones from the second movie in the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. But new characters are only the beginning. New special effects will also be added to enhance the Pirates of the Caribbean theme park experience.

"The creative legacy of Pirates of the Caribbean has come full circle with the attraction initially inspiring our highly successful film franchise and now the films inspiring exciting additions to the attraction itself," said ________ Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. "The attraction enhancements capture the same spirit, swashbuckling humor and action that moviegoers loved in the first Pirates of the Caribbean which will continue with the highly anticipated new tales this summer and beyond."

Created under the direct creative supervision of Walt Disney himself, Pirates of the Caribbean is the quintessential Disney theme park adventure, a swashbuckling voyage that transports guests back to the days when pirates and privateers roamed the Spanish Main. Starring a comical cast of rascals, scoundrels, villains and knaves, the world-famous attraction sends guests of all ages on a boat ride through mysterious caverns where "Dead men tell no tales" and then into a colonial era Caribbean seaport under siege by a band of fun-loving pirates. The attraction's jaunty theme song, "Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me)," sets the show’s light tone with its tongue-in-cheek depiction of high-seas lawlessness.

The original incarnation of Pirates of the Caribbean premiered on March 18, 1967, in New Orleans Square at Disneyland in California. Featuring more than 120 Audio-Animatronics performers, lavishly decorated sets and special effects, it’s considered to be one of the most spectacular and enduring attractions ever created for a theme park. With its setting revised slightly to fit a Caribbean Plaza location in Adventureland, the attraction opened to guests at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom on December 15, 1973. More than 500 million people have experienced the rollicking fun of Pirates of the Caribbean in California and Florida over the past 39 years.

"Enhancing the classic Pirates attractions with new characters and new technology will ensure their relevance and place in Disney theme parks as timeless adventures," said Tom Fitzgerald, senior creative executive for Walt Disney Imagineering. "We're adding a layer of storytelling from the films to the attraction while retaining all the familiar elements that make it vibrant and exciting for every age group."

The Pirates of the Caribbean additions are one part of the "Happiest Celebration on Earth," an 18-month salute (continuing through 2006) to 50 years of Disney park magic around the globe that started with the opening of Walt Disney’s original park, Disneyland, in 1955.

JULY 7th!!!

But are they modifying the ending of the WDW version? You know, have the unload in the loading area? Because I saw many rumors of the Imagineers planning that and I want to know if that will happen.

Well werent these new special effects originally designed for the 50th. anniversary redo of pirates of the caribean? Originally for Disneylands 50th. WDI was supposed to upgrade and revamp 5 classic attractions (JC, Space Mountain, POTC, HM and IASW) in the end thanks to Eisner and Cynthia Harris we only got Space Mountain. Anyway, I remember the rumors were to add some Flaming Skull effect to the Caves scene at the beginning of the ride as a sort of transitional scene. I forgot what else was planned but im pretty sure whatever was planed for the 50th. is being used now.

Awesome! This sounds great, only because they're not really altering the origional attraction but merely adding on to the excitement. Whats even better is my trip is planned for June 9th!! So ill be able to enjoy the ride nearly right when it opens!

GREAT!!!:D

Rumors = internet musings and other fertilizer that wasn't ever going to happen.

But even then, lets take a look at your list.... Jungle Cruise got some updates (Gorillas shooting and pirahnas), Space Mountain (Major Rehab), POTC (Upcoming), HM(Floating Leota)... So improvements to those attractions were made... What were you complaining about again?

This is just what WDW's Pirates needs. I don't think DLR's really needs anything extra, but ours really does. Our Pirates is a pile o' junk put next to DLR's. Let's all hope ours comes out better than before....

I'm hoping this "enhancement" goes over well. I'm most interested in what type of new special effects they may use. Its sounds like the ride itself is staying pretty much the same with a few Jack Sparrow and Barbossa AA's here and there. I'm all for it, as long as it doesn't take away from the original feel and look of either ride (in FL or CA). Its definetely something many guests are looking for in the Pirates ride nowadays. I'd say almost every time I go on the ride, at some point, I overhear someone who either is looking forward to seeing Sparrow or Barbossa in the ride or at the end were wondering where they were. The movies have really generated a new interest in the ride and for an entirely new generation, the movie WAS their first experience with the POTC story and so there is an expectation that the main characters they came to know would be present somewhere in the ride. It just better not come across tacky.

I'm hoping for some updated effects in the ship battle sequence. I've always thought it was too cheesey. Maybe try to add an effect where it feels like the cannon balls are flying over your heads. I would also like to see a bit more in the cave section. Maybe update the skull that says "Dead men tell no tales." Make it look like it's floating or something.

you know what Enderikari you need to shut up already. Ive actually spoken to an imagineer about it and he told me exactly what happened. I keep seeing you poping into threads and saying "hurr fanboy wishes aint gonna happen." During the Eisner era you may have had some relevance in life but now things are different we are going back to the Walt Disney Company circa 1986 when big dreams became big realities (Splash Mountain, Star Tours, etc.). I bet you were one of the people a year ago saying "pirates of the caribean upgrades arent going to happen...HURRRR". If all your going to do is stick your nose in and push your negative agenda then you have no place in this new era.

You're right, ours really doesn't even compare to Disneyland's.

Thanks for the info, WeLComeHomE OKW... sounds like this should be a pretty neat update to one of my favorite classics.

Wow... You have actually spoken with an imagineer? No way? I thought they were fanciful gods among men... Never coming down to speak with the common folk... I guess that means you must know the truth, after all, you've spoken with one of hundreds of the folks who create for Walt Disney...
Hi, I eat lunch with Imagineers, and I don't have to pay for the priviledge. And let me tell you, the heartiest laughs we share are the ruminations we hear over the internet from ignorant fan-boys (not pointing any fingers here).
And... umm... I don't want to burst any bubbles here, child, but the Disney Company circa 1986....was....ummm... the Eisner Era.
And you know what, you probably would have seen me denying any Pirates rumors last year, because they hadn't been officially announced by the Disney Company, and its not my place to confirm company business.
I'd hate to be the one to burst your little bubble, but all projects have budgets... and those budgets determine what can be put into the parks and resorts. There is nobody more excited than me about John Lasseter advising and Ed Catmull running various areas of the Disney company, I bow to their creativity, but they, just like Eisner, are beholden to stockholders. And I can guarentee the last thing that they are both going to do is search through fan boards for ideas of what to put into the parks, and that includes both beastly kingdom, and fire/bald mountain (pipe dreams).

I respect you for working with such a fine group of ppl, but you are giving the imagineers a bad name. If you want to start a thread called "i am condescending to all disney world dreamers", then you can go do that. but this is a thread about POtC....NOT lets see how much Enderikari can prove everyone else wrong. You are right, it is not your place to confirm company business. it is also not your business to deny rumors and crush ppls dreams... go to intercot, maybe they will like you better

See, you are not seeing the real deal here. I am not doing this to crush this child's dreams. And I don't work with Imagineers, I am given the opportunity to pick their brains ever so often. I have no desire to work in the creative portion of the company, too much stress.

Dreaming and Believing, Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust I have absolutely no problem with. If there's a board that has a bunch of people thinking about things to improve WDW, so be it. I love to here some armchair imagineering and dream a little myself. To see the populace blue sky some ideas is fabulous, and shows that people really care about the Walt Disney Company...

My issues come when somebody takes those dreams, and tries to provide a little more oomph... To try and impress that itinerant entity known as the Disney Fansite members, by name dropping. By presenting something as fact because of somebody they know. I want people to dream! I don't have a problem with people wishing! But, over and over again, some people present their opinions... as fact... Present their musings... as truth... and it is simply not.

And that's where my issue comes in. I am not stopping someone from dreaming... I want everyone to appreciate Walt Disney World for what it is, what it is going to be, what it has been...

hey stupid I didnt have to pay for the priviledge of talking with an imagineer either and the company circa 1986..was HURRRR The FRANK WELLS/Eisner Era but I dont see what that has to do with anything. Also in case you didnt know Splash Mountain, Star Tours, and Forbidden Mountain were "pipe dreams" at one time too that doesnt mean they arent going to happen. The "on the cheap/good enough for six flags" mentality went out the door with Eisner/pressler/harris. The "it takes money to make money" frank wells approach just walked in the building.

Yo-ho, yo-ho: Disney to update Pirates ride

By Scott Powers | Sentinel Staff Writer
Posted February 2, 2006, 2:42 PM EST

Pirates of the Caribbean, a mainstay ride at Magic Kingdom since 1973 and at Disneyland since 1967, will close for three to four months this spring so it can be updated.

Disney wants to add characters from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, including Jack Sparrow, the Johnny Depp character, in time for the July 7 release of the sequel, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Disney also plans to update some of the special effects.

The rides are closing and the changes are being made at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

The ride spawned the first movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003. Now the movie, and its sequel are changing the ride, Disney officials said. In addition to Jack Sparrow, his nemesis Barbossa and the ghostly character Davey Jones from Dead Man's Chest will be worked into the ride.

"The creative legacy of Pirates of the Caribbean has come full circle with the attraction initially inspiring our highly successful film franchise and now the films inspiring exciting additions to the attraction itself," ________ Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, stated in a press release.

Walt Disney supervised creation of the ride at Disneyland and it premiered March 18, 1967. The ride was opened at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom Dec. 15, 1973. The ride features a slow boat ride through caverns populated by singing, brawling and menacing robotic pirates and other characters.
