Monorail Purple Being Retired

They will probably run one train less from now on. I wonder how badly damaged the two trains are? Probably use purple for spare parts and fixing pink.

The accident is a tragedy, but there is no reason to retire a train (unless this is due to the extent of damage). There is no reason to "pay a tribute" to someone by retiring a piece of equipment (nor do I think there is any need to pay a tribute to him at all by the company or fans of the park).

This is just a guess. The cost to repair two trains is probably much higher than the cost of scraping purple for parts and using at least part of it to repair pink. You also have think that the age of the trains might make it worth while to build new ones.

That's what insurance is for.

True but everything has a depreciation value. If the cost of the repair exceeds a percentage of the value they will not pay for the repair. I have no clue if this is the case with monorail purple but it is a reasonable assumption.

Anyone know how far the current monorails are into their projected life?

Well the company that manufactured the composite bodies in a television interview stated that they could last up to 10 to 15 years, but just like pretty much everything else on the train as long as you keep replacing parts they could last forever.

I don't know. I've heard conflicting information on the life span.

I have heard - only from one source - that both trains should be back in service within 6-12 months.

What i see happening is the good cab from Purple placed on Pink, train resprayed and now there's 11 trains. Just get 2 new cabs built and voila - all 12 are back in service.

Keep in mind this isn't official yet. Based on the timeline though that WDW is "supposed" to begin getting new Mark VIII's next year, it would seem to make sense to repair one and use the other for parts. This is of course IF they are going to be getting new trains.

Given the current economic climate and the rehabs of the trains over the past 5 years, you really think that Disney is buying 12 new monorail trains?

I think it would be more fitting to put a plaque in the cockpit as a memorial to Austin than anything else.

I agree with this. Bring Purple back out and have at least something in that same cockpit. Hell, if they start letting guests ride in the front again, I'll be one of the first in line for Purple!!!

Considering that they have just very recently invested in upgrading the existing Mark VI monorails (New monitoring systems, new flooring, new hand railing configurations, etc..) I would be very surprised if they were planning to have new trains built soon.

They will prollibly not use the color purple again, bring in a new color for the last train. There are not many colors left, but I would like to see a navy blue/indigo color.
