I saw that pic last week and thought the same thing.

You all know that white monorail is made by Bombardier and is a M-VI in Las Vegas. The same people that made WDW's Mark VI's, just the latest version.

It's also totally automated - No Driver! Taking a clue from the French TGV bullet nosed trains the nose retracts up to reveal the tow coupling. FYI - The Vegas tractor is identical to the WDW #3 Green Tractor it has an enclosed side mounted cab. #1 & #2 do not.

Unfortunately on the M-VI, no one can ride up front its not furnished.

The rescue unit is being stored at the old fire station behind the magic kingdom. Emergency Services still utilizes this as a maintenance facility for all of their emergency vehicles. One of the inaccuracies in that article is the fact that it says "platform extends to a height of 22 feet — tall enough to reach the monorail's highest point" The monorail beam at certain points extends as high as 50 feet.

Two locations - In/Out of the Contemporary 5th Floor level and between the MK and Grand Floridian to go over the Water Pagent Barge Canal. Really nice views from there.

im going to vegas next week and i can not wait to ride that monorail.... yes i know that sounds pathetic giving all the things that there are to do in vegas but come on who does not love riding in a monorail. They should put one from jersey to new york so i dont have to take the path or a bus. Now if only the vegas one was voiced by Jack Wagner :)

Such a tragedy! My heart goes out to both pilots and their families.

Predictions: New safety procedures, a "real" monorail control center, in-car and backup cameras/sensors and no passengers in the cab for the foreseeable future.

May this never happen again.

I can't believe they just bought this vehicle and they already have to use it when they said themselves they don't ever want to use it.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the pilot's family.

Yeah, I had no idea when I posted it how timely it would be. Too bad they didn't use it from the sounds of it. They should have instead of moving the trains back into the station and causing more damage/injury. Sad.

Just in case anyone is interested one of the RCID FD's monrail rescue vehicles is Truck 31. It is a 1990 E-One 65' 6X6 Ladder Truck 250/200 (250 GPM Pump/200 Gallon Booster Tank)

That's cool! And useful!
I was wondering on the monorail some time ago how to evacuate it.
I remember a Jim Hill article that mentioned a monorail fire that had people supposedly walk on top of the safe, far-away-from-the-fire part of the monorail and on the track?!?!?

EDIT - Here's that part of the article:

...Like that time back in June of 1985 when Monorail Silver caught fire. And with the train stopped dead a half mile south of the Ticket & Transportation Center, it was only the resourcefulness of two WDW visitors (Who first pulled open the doors of the car they were trapped in. Then -- after climbing up on the roof of their monorail -- they pulled all of the other passengers in their compartment up onto the top of the train. Everyone then walked along the top of the monorail and -- after sliding down the windshield to the two-foot-wide beam -- walked the rest of the way to the TTC) that saved those 240 passengers after the last two cars of Monorail Silver were entirely engulfed in flames.

I was actually there when the Monorail fire happened. We were driving back from the Magic Kingdom and the monorail was stopped on the rail that goes to Epcot next to the road and they had ladders up to it and people were out on the roof. I don’t remember seeing anyone walking the rail and why would they if there were ladders to the Monorail. Seems like it would be an unsafe walk for that far on that high and narrow of a platform with it raining (since the fire was from a storm that lightning hit the monorail). Hopefully they turned off the high voltage.
