Mobile Magic + Verizon iPhone = Switching Carriers?

Well the cost of using navigator is on dumbphones not android devices, the $10 is not to unlock the gps chip but to use a program that can use.

The added apps on ios devices would not work unless apple approved them and knowing jobs, apple would get a cut of the profits.

As for charging you to tether, you are using their network to connect more than one device to the internet.

Check your facts. Windows Mobile and Palm Pre phones were indeed handicapped by Verizon that you could NOT use the onboard GPS chip for apps like google maps unless you paid for the $10/month Verizon nav app. Droids were/are the only handset line that Verizon waved this. I'm a long time phone geek and hacker. Go read any forum regarding verizon and gps-a. If you didnt pay the monthly fee, you were stuck using cell phone triangulation from the towers, which is awful at best. I'm not aware if Verizon has changed this policy, but I have to imagine that since they are more and more anti-consumer, there is no way they have. By anti-consumer, I mean how they just raised their ETF (early termination fees) to double what other carriers charge and also cut your ability to return it to only 14 days. And you also have to PAY for whatever you did with that phone when you do return it in the 14 day window. They also got rid of their early upgrade programs while companies like Sprint let you upgrade in only 1 year for these kind of accounts. When you compare them all, Verizon charges higher rates , has WAY more restrictions, and locks you in with no where to go unless you want to get raped by fees.

And as far as tethering goes, its available to Android phones with a simple app for like $10 that allows you to do it without having to tell your carrier so they can stick it to you for an extra $40/month. Perfectly legal and does not require hacking or "rooting" your phone. Also, the iPhone is so locked down and jammed full of whatever Steve Jobs thinks you should do, there is no ability to do the things an Android or WebOS phone could do for FREE. But alas, most Apple product users are sheep that just follow the flock regardless of need or actual practicality. Apple products are great, but twice as expensive as everything else great? I don't think so.

Sadly, its all irrelevant what phone you have. Its all about marketing and making you think you NEED to have THAT particular phone. As a long time IT engineer and CTO, I have people asking me all the time about what PC or phone to buy. I can't tell you how many people have told me they want a Droid or an iPhone, but don't want to get a data plan with it. :ROFLOL: Turns out they just think they are cool from seeing commercials or that their friend has one and they can play Angry Birds. Yes, people are actually contemplating spending close to $3000 over 2 years of a contract to play games and/or simply be seen talking on it.

Is Mobile Magic even that good? I was under the impression that it only provided wait times, and only in the specific park you're in. Is that accurate? If so, it seems pretty "meh."

Users with a winmo or palm devices are handicapping themselves without verizon's help.

As for the tethering, it is a gray area and if you pull in too much data verizon can found out, unlimited is never unlimited.

Well how much do people spend just to have a polished metal machine with a half eaten apple stamped on it?

It's not that great. If you have a smartphone, you get much better park data from the Lines program that Touringplans.com does, and you can easily access dining data from Disney's own mobile website which loads nicely on both Android and Safari.

And, if I'm not mistaken, the Lines subscription is less than the Mobile Magic fee and it's for a whole year.

They lower the price of Mobile Magic to $1.99, but it is still not available on smart phones. And based on the info they are putting on their mobile site it doesn't look like they will port the app to smart phones.

It looks like it has everything Mobile Magic has and maybe a bit more.

Here is the link:

You are correct on every other point, however.

Also, Undercover Tourist has a nice Android/iOS app that is free.

To the fellow who quoted $160 for a single iPhone on an AT&T contract, those people must have the fattest minutes package out there. We have been with AT&T for so many years...since before BellSouth Mobility was bought out by Cingular. Currently we have 3 phones on our plan: 1 is a basic phone for my mom & the other 2 are both iPhone 4's for hubby & me. With our data (I'm grandfathered under the unlimited data), unlimited text, and minutes package we pay $165-ish/month. That's 2 iPhones, not 1. Plus, there's a 3rd line on there.

We have better than 18 months left on our newest commitment with AT&T so for at least that long we'll be with AT&T. Unless the monthly total can beat what we have I don't see us switching to Verizon.

Another big consideration would be the fact that all our extended family are AT&T. We all use our cell phones for communication which is free & unlimited. Because of this our minutes package is small & inexpensive. Would we require a ton more minutes if we switched? That would be a consideration.

My personal hope is that the iPhone not being exclusive to AT&T will bring some pricing competition between the 2 carriers & push the cost of the data down at least some. I'd love to get my boys each an iPhone. The only thing that holds us back is the cost of the data plans for each. My bill would go up by $70 or $80 a month. Currently the understanding in our house is they'll be able to get the iPhone when they can afford to pay for the service. Lol!

All the techie stuff y'all discuss is lost on me. Lol! I guess I can lend perspective from the viewpoint of the average consumer. :D

BTW, baaaaah! I'm part of the Apple herd. Love my iPhone to pieces. Got my first MacBook last year and have nothing but love for it, too. Both devices have been wonderful...not the first issue...can't say the same about the Windows driven crap I graduated from.

I actually think the mobile magic app is pretty good! I do carry a couple different Android devices, and the touring plans and the Ride Hopper app, and while they seem to be pretty accurate, they rely on other people in the park to update the wait times. In most cases, I have seen the Ride Hopper app within +/- 10 minutes of actual wait times.

The advantaget that the mobile magic app has, in my opinion, is that WDW provides exact posted wait times to Verizon for the app, as well as current FP return times. I think it is awesome to be able to see which attractions have FP available, and decide which ones we want to go get (based on real-time return times!)

Another benefit of the mobile magic app (for me, with 2 young daughters who love seeing characters) is that it will tell you which characters are out, where you can find them, and what times they will be there- All inall, I think its a fantastic app, and im glad I have the luxury of having both an android device as well as feature phone from VZW to use all the available apps!

I didn't see this posted here yet, but if you currently have an Iphone with AT&T you cannot just switch networks with the same phone, the internals are different.

If someone did not know this, it will just be funy to overhear them at the verizon store.

...

Like I posted previously, all that data is available on any web capable phone via the mobile site.

Now, the only reason to use the Mobile Magic app is if you have a mobile device that cannot access the web.

The 3G network (CDMA/EVDO) Has the capability, its a matter of deploying it

There were some rumors earlier this week that Verizon may now turn this service on. I personally think they will hold back a few months and see if their system is overloaded by the influx of data hogging iPhones. Once Verizon's 4G system if operational it should not be an issue at all.

Mobile Magic is ok at best. You do get accurate wait times for all the rides and shows in only the park you are in. It will not tell you any wait info for parks you are not standing in. For first time visitors that don't know the parks like many of us do, it can help with mapping and telling you where the nearest restroom, restaurant or shop is.

Well then, until I have to buy a new phone + the 18 months or so still remaining on our current contract w/AT&T I can guarantee you it will be at least that long before I even consider switching. Stupid iPhones cost a fortune and that's WITH eligible upgrade discounts. :hammer:

I carry both a web enabled android phone, as well as a phone with Mobile Magic- There is quite a bit of information that MM offeres that the disney website does not. In all honesty, I would feel handicapped with only the disney mobile website, and not the added content of MM!

I think Big Red will be just fine- Android devices use, on average 200MB more data per month than iPhones, and VZW has been on board with Android for quite a while now.

I've gotta say that after having a smartphone or some sort of data phone for seven years, I've almost never felt the need to download data while talking. The only time I think it is useful is if you are using a GPS nav program while having a conversation and you need to get new map data. Otherwise, I very rarely make use of the feature. Yet people talk about it like they do it all the time....

That has nothing to do with Disney mobile magic, but I just thought I'd throw it out there.

I don't understand how people can talk to their mothers over the phone without browsing .

Seriously, unless you "need" that function, it doesn't enhance the experience at all.
