Uni will be giving up those rights any day now ;)
When the Marvel Super Hero fad is over... ;)

In other words, Marvel Super Hero Island will be long gone while Wizarding World still packs them in.. And all you get in WDW is a meet and greet... :)

~~~Comic Book Movies, huge fad which will fade away and fall hard when they do...
The Walt Disney Co owns Marvel, ergo, Marvel is not a fad. Surprised you didn't know that.
Universals transportation is taxis from the airport. They r walking to universal as bus and boats are slow. Food at universal is chain restaurant like hard rock and margarittaville. Lowes hotels are nice but for price the grand floridian and akl are in line.
No, there isn't a free bus from the airport. If you don't have access to a car or some way to get yourself from the airport to your hotel, Disney has a free bus and they do win there. Uni has nothing.
I was thinking of onsite transportation, where Uni rules. At Disney, I always drove the rental car because it was faster and nicer than taking the bus. At Uni, I always took the boat or walked because that was faster, easier and prettier than driving myself.
I happen to prefer Pastamore and Margaritaville to anything at Disney. But, food is a subjective thing. What I like, someone else might hate...and vice versa.
The Grand Floridian doesn't begin to come close to Portofino Bay on any level. I love the AKL. I really do. It's lovely and unique...but the service isn't close to that provided at Uni and the rooms are so much smaller and...I can't compare them.
It's almost unfair to compare Disney to Uni, hotel-wise. Disney isn't even trying to offer that kind of service. They aren't on the same level. Parks...it's fair to make comparisons. Hotels - it really isn't.
Transportation, too, is difficult. Disney is very spread out and they're mostly hauling people around on busses. Uni's hotels are close to their parks and they have a short boat ride through a beautifully landscaped area. It isn't even that long a walk, if people choose to walk it.
I always had a rental car. At Disney, I drove it. At Uni, I didn't. You'd be crazy to drive yourself at Uni because it would take much longer and be much more of a hassle.
If you can afford to stay at Walt Disney World then you can more than likely afford transportation if you are staying elsewhere because of the price difference.
45 pages later...Disneyland is shutting down their localized twitter accounts which actually interact with guests and probably rolling them into the Orlando based social media team who doesn't know what year Walt was born in. I'm pretty sure no one has denied this portion at least. But man did the message get buried
I see what you did there... Yea, of course, someone here thinks because Disney owns things they won't be or aren't fads... But something like Potter, which comes along once in a generation, is only a fad and will die out...
For something that is just a fad it sure does still sell a lot of books, movies, THEME PARK tickets, merchandise, has a new movie based on the Wizarding world in development, JK working on a play about Harry Potter's life before Hogwarts, a weekend celebrating Harry Potter in January to be held in Universal Orlando, as well as many fan forums/website, and conventions held through out the year, the biggest being LeakyCon... but yes, Potter is strictly a fad...
Many were excited about them, eager to learn more about them and how to get them for their trip. Many also thought the mobile app, pre-scheduling some attractions and being able to use the band for so many things were neat as well. I showed a few the packaging and what all I had received from my previous trip and they were impressed by that too (one even commented it reminded them of how apple packages their devices)
I am not making this up. The trend I see and hear is if those that aren't frequent annual visitors to WDW like many of us here think this is very cool
Out of the trips from clients who have used them over the past several months only 1 reported a problem to me (and I followed up with all of them). Their issue was with photopass and they called and got it fixed (photos linked to their main account...similar problem I had actually where by default others that have a Disney account in your family, the show others your photos is turned off so once you enable from the site under each profile that has had a photopass photographer scan their band, then everyone in their family can see them)
The trend you see since yesterday? Lol.
Disney has a new Photopass-type thing with a new name. They're selling it in the parks.
They just like Disney World, and like being able to take their room key (magic band) into the hot tub with them. They don't like it when it doesn't work to charge to their room in the parks.
That's it right there. Every person I spoke with (while I was at WDW) and asked how they liked the magic band said the same thing. They liked the convenience of charging to their room. Not one person mentioned a thing about booking FP on their phones or that they were on vacation just to try the magic band or any other nonsense.
99% of guests don't care about upgraded infrastructure. The 1% that do are folks like us here. You won't find ANY average guest or 1st time visitor that would defend magic bands as staunchly as people here do and tell you it was the reason they booked a trip or that it was the reason their trip was so magical. You wouldn't find any guest that hates it the way some do here either. Average guests just don't care how much it cost or what the money could have been used for and these are the people TWDC salivate for. The honey boo boo crowd that doesn't know any better and doesnt care to learn either. Just tell me it's good and will help me, and you got my vote type people. They don't want or need customers like us that know better.
To all the educated people here that like the magic band; you are experienced at Disney and know how to save money when at WDW and guess what, ... that means they don't want you as a customer even if you love MM+. Because you can think for yourself and have mastered their system and know how to turn a $6000 dollar vacation into a $5,200 vacation, THEY DONT WANT YOU anymore.
I finally got the chance to chat with a friend about his MB experience. He's a tech guy, so his input would be interesting. He liked the planning aspect, and opening his door. He said he still had to carry around a piece of paper with all his FP times, and ADR's. ( I don't know why.) The one thing he did not care for, was the look on every CM's face when he wanted to use the band to make purchases. They all went from smiling to dread. And of course, his band didn't work for charging anything, his entire trip. He did not go to GS to fix it, pulling out his charge card was easier in the moment. His other comment was that he had the worst Sushi at the Poly he has ever eaten, he was staying there. He also said the food there in general had gone downhill since his last visit.
I have never said people cannot like Universal.
I personally don't feel it offers me the same quality or value WDW does. I don't see Universal as competition, Disney does not see Universal as competition if they did, they would be building at the same clip to bring in more guests which Universal has to. Disney is in this for the long run, MM+ is for the long run, Universal's constant building is short term and short sighted especially when the fad audience leaves.
That's how I feel, if it upsets you I apologize.
Jimmy Thick- I call it as I see it.
Aside from your stupid tag line this is one of the better posts you've made. You spelled out your opinions and whether we agree with them or not, you at least put it out there. Using this as a jumping off point, can we have an actual discussion about this?
I agree that since the initial failures of Islands of Adventure, Disney didn't really view the Universal parks as a threat. However, the relative attendance gains since Harry Potter cannot go unnoticed. With that said, I ask the following questions to you:
  • Do you or Disney think Universal can ever or will ever be a threat to Disney?
  • What would they have to do in your mind to be regarded as a threat?
  • Can Universal leverage a quicker turnaround time on newer Intellectual Property can that be deemed a competitive advantage?
Define good work?
Disney makes stinkers too, The Lone Ranger put me to sleep literally, but I enjoyed John Carter.
Atari was a fad, the current video game companies got it right, or I should say Nintendo did everyone else copied their business model.
Jimmy Thick- Kinda like Disney theme parks...
See, I liked The Lone Ranger but didn't care for John Carter. Eventually we'll agree on something.
I don't get myself either sometimes, no harm.
The question you pose is a loaded one, because due to Disney's recent acquisitions they really have no choice but to use an existing IP like say Star Wars. That being said, Star Wars has proven to be popular beyond its initial sample size with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The billions Disney paid will look like peanuts in a couple years.
Personally, I would love to see original attractions, but I don't know if such a thing is possible anymore in the internet age. Horizons if revealed to the public now would more than likely disown the ride after a few months because the public wouldn't care about it. No one wants to go to a theme park to learn about anything, they want the thrill or omg moment to tweet to someone. You won't get that with original attractions anymore unless they have a multi-million dollar IP attached.
As much as I rag on Potter, its the future, like it or not.
Jimmy Thick- Disposable IP's to the rescue.
Universal has said that all of their investment in the parks will be IP driven. I don't think Disney has made any such declaration and if you look at the last decade of experiences many of the major additions are not driven by IP (most notably Soarin', Test Track, Mission: SPACE, Expedition Everest). There is one big thing at play here when it comes to the character infusion that was the heated debate a few years ago (remember the good old days): Characters aren't necessarily the problem, but they're the easiest thing to blame.
It's hard for people to effectively explain why the like or dislike an attraction because more often than not, describing components is difficult. However, if you can relate something (Such as a character) that makes it easy. The opposition I had with Character Infusion in many situations was that they were nothing more than cheap overlays (or at least they felt that way). When an attraction or a new story is forced into an area that was designed from something else, it's much harder for it to work as effectively as the original. This, more than character infusion are the "problems" at Stitch's Great Escape and The Seas with Nemo and Friends.
Correct. I like the old opening of UoE with the radok blocks and the old finale, both of which are hard to describe well, so all you can do is hope that the person you are talking to will get a good sense of it from @marni1971 's videos.
