There is something iconic about the original track that gives me pause about this. Maybe it's the fact that it was never cloned. But it definitely needs something, because it was painful the last time I rode it in 2017, and that's most of a decade ago.

One question I have is whether there's enough room in the building for anything more substantial than the current track layout. I suppose with the elimination of the second track, there would be ample room for a pretty great coaster.

I'm really conflicted on this. A smooth, new Space Mountain is really tempting, but the sentimentalist in me is saddened by the possibility of this track layout going the way of the Dodo.

Weren’t there some concerns raised about falling cell phones and keys on Space Mountain? Wonder if moving to a single track would be for safety purposes. Recalling what happened with the dueling dragons at Universal, thinking maybe coaster cars in close proximity is a bit of a liability, depending on the layout.
Could be! Also, I hate to say it, but it might just be because it's less expensive to build one coaster than two.

Could be, but I doubt Disney would penny pinch to the point of losing valuable capacity for a refurb (maybe I’m naive though!) I looked it up and there was something about a cell phone ban on Space Mountain - my guess is they’re going to try for a track that protects against projectiles.

Start to pay more attention to Tomorrowland rumors as a whole.

If it means anything, one of the things Henry Mystic said before he got got was Space Mountain in Florida getting a whole re-do akin to what Tokyo is getting. Scratching my chin wondering if we might get the whole thing redone here.

The ride itself. The coasters...

As far as I have seen and rode... it's nothing special. The thrill comes from riding it in the dark. I don't know why some seem to have an attachment to them or that it's important that they're be two of them. You could transplant the coaster to a boardwalk pier and it would be just a kiddie/family coaster with no big drop, no inversions. Just a standard boardwalk flat coaster.

What am I missing with regard to "protect the two tracks!"

Given the likelihood of Laugh Floor moving over to the MuppetVision building at some point in the future plus the Stitch building still sitting vacant, I'd hope the company has been eying Tomorrowland for a revamp in the not-too-distant future. Space Mountain could certainly be a flagship project for another New Tomorrowland.

WDI seems to be in a Space Mountain phase as TDL is getting a new one, DLP is Rumored to get an update, and Hong Kong is a potential for the refresh teased last year

For me personally it is less about two tracks and more about single-file seating. The smaller cars allow for tighter turns and are fairly unique among coasters. The two tracks in turn provide the capacity that the single-file seating misses.

What wondrous insults to our intelligence await us for this land?

Maybe they could put Moana there. The ocean is kinda like space if you don't think about it much, so it would be a perfect fit.

Or maybe we could get a Wish ride, because the one idiot wanted a rocket, so, again, perfect fit.

Coco? The movie is about families and families have kids and kids are our future. PERFECT FIT.

I don’t believe this is entirely accurate.

Is there any structural reason to replace the whole mountain? We have the largest mountain with three ride systems integrated. They could easily clear out the existing two coaster tracks and have plenty of room for a large, new coaster.

Anyway, yes, a full gut of the track is planned here at some point. Hadn’t heard about an entirely new layout with just one track, however. Worth keeping an ear out as plans solidify over the next year or so. I wouldn’t expect anything like DLP’s mountain. They won’t want two 48” height requirement coasters next to each other.

An update to the level of DL’s 2005 update but with a more interesting track layout could be a real win for us. But, I had been told they’d stick with our existing layout. Could have changed, though…

It's such a tight space, even with a single track I would think this would still be a problem since you would still run more then one train on the track at a time.

A new TL for both MK and DL keeps coming up in rumors, but Disney never follows through because they can't quite figure out the direction they want to go in for the land. Maybe WDW can tap into something like Elio or incredibles for their land, or if stranger things happen, Fantastic Four if Universal decides to scrap MSHI for Wicked. (Mark Woodbury has said Wicked is under consideration for the universal parks.

Universal won't "scrap" MSHI for Wicked, they will add Wicked but MSHI is there to stay and there is no scenario Universal will let the rights revert to Disney. They both make plenty of money from the land and there is zero desire to change that except from Disfans
