MK closing at 10:00. Why?

This may have already been said, but I suspect it is a cost cutting move to off-set the additional hours of operation at Animal Kingdom.

Being local passholders we are taking less trips to MK this year because of the reduction. In the past we would typically arrive at 7:00pm to avoid the extraordinary heat of the typical Summer day in Florida. We could stay until 11:00 or 12:00am and felt satisfied with the experience. When accounting for monorail/ferry time going to and from the park, it no longer seems feasible to arrive for a 3 hour trip that is usually reduced by transportation to get around the lagoon.

This is not a complaint. This is just an observation of how this years reduced summer hours have reduced the value proposition of continuing to purchase APs for my family.

Couldn't disagree more.

Rope drop gets you on one or two rides, TOPS, before the crowds roll in. And you might already be competing with FastPassers.
Plus, you still have to wait for the rope drop AND there are times were Disney will open the park early, unannounced; effectively negating the rope drop benefits. (happened to us 2 months ago)

The 10pm-1am hours can be walk-on for a lot of stuff...eventually becoming a walk-on for everything towards the last hour.
Hmmm but if those two rides you do are the most popular ones you then don't have to do them again and whilst all the later arrivals start rushing to them you've started doing the attractions they'll do next, you stay ahead for some time.

While there is some truth to what you stated, it does not negate the fact that nearly everything in the park is walk on from 10:00pm to 1:00am. Some people like to experience their favorite attractions more than once, and others (like my family) enjoyed arriving at the park late in order to maximize our visit by experiencing any and all attractions with little to no wait. This allowed us the benefit of utilizing our time in the park to the utmost efficiency.

Having the ability to find a lower crowd time in the parks is even more important since the advent of FP+ with tiers and reride restrictions.

It explains why bean-counter-ex-weathermen-turned-CEOs close parks at 10 pm. And it also explains why experienced theme park managers who care about a quality guest experience keep them open until 1 am.

I get that "Disney is supposed to be different/better" and all that jazz... but I'm just not shocked by it, mainly because it appears that all amusement parks have started closing earlier recently. Obviously costs would be the reason, but it is strange that all of the major parks have decided to do it this year.

Right, but there will ALWAYS be lines late morning through late afternoon. Yes, you got on two popular rides fairly quickly, but lets not pretend that less popular rides won't have wait times during the day time hours. And, again, you still had to wait for the rope drop.

Whereas, if you stroll in at 7pm...even if the park closes at 10pm, you're still going to have less lines overall with the ability to walk-on the more popular rides towards the end of the day.

BTW, my friend did AK rope-drop last month only to find the park opened early for unknown reasons. He still had to wait 20+ minutes for FoP.

On both Space and Splash mountains, towards the end of the night, I was shocked at the wait times given how small the standby lines were. There we so many outstanding FastPasses that the the FP line was actually larger than the stand-by line. Of course, they had to honor the FP first, so for every 100 FP riders, they only allowed 10 stand-by riders.

I'm guessing either weather or technical closures led to the issuing of new FastPasses, which completely annihilates the stand-by line.

Rather than quote two people who have replied to me, at no point have I said that I don't think the parks should be open later, I raised my point as some people had said to open the parks later in the morning which I disagree with. I like getting up early and going to the park, I don't stand in long lines and will do everything I want to do fairly easily, rope drop works for me and my family. I'd like the parks later to but I don't see the point in moving from say 9-9 to 10-10 that will just make it busier, the trade off won't be 9-9 or 10-1.

Two and a half weeks ago I was at Disney for a week... There were people lining up at he busses at EVERY park (except for epcot) at 8:00 am at Pop Century. It was instantly pretty moderately crowded in the parks at rope drop.
