I'm sifting through all the info, but it's just so much! I'm normally not the kind of person who's all uptight about using old things. I mean, I'm a garage sale kinda girl, but I draw the line at certain things.

Plus, we're not looking to get every single thing under the sun for Sprout. Just the nessesities.

and I wasn't getting on to you! I just remember reading and reading and this book conflicts with that book and so on. And we are looking for a new crib too for this second one. No idea yet. My wife is "nesting" and getting the room ready.

If you are looking just for necessities, Bunny, just get a bassinet...little bun wouldn't use a larger crib for the first few months anyway.

And the one thing I would make sure I didn't buy used is a car seat. With cribs you can usually make sure the slats aren't too wide and the hardware is good - used is always a possibility.

Jess, Dana, and Rick, quick question - and I don't really expect you to know the answer - but what kind of crib do you have? Does it have stationary sides? Who made it, and if you don't mind my asking, how much did you pay for it?

I'm adrift in the sea of baby products and have no idea where to start.

We have a Jenny Lind as well... however ours was $120 from Baby's R Us... it's the same TYPE that Jay and I had as babies... which is why I chose it - but it's up to code. My mom offerred my old Jenny Lind but I felt uncomfortable not knowing if it was up to code or not. So we purchased this one instead. It converst into a toddler bed... here's the link:

http://www.toysrus.com/product/inde...&cp=2255986.2256245.2256274&parentPage=family

The big reason why we chose this crib is that we originally planned to have kids pretty close together... probably while the first was still in the crib, and didn't want to have to purchase 2 expensive cribs. So we figured we could match with another inexpensive one.

Pros for the crib: It's in expensive - comes in 5 easy to assemble pieces, this is the one we took apart and took to disney with us, very simple. Lizzy has always loved looking out at everyone through the bars, and they're not wide enough that she could have ever fit her head through.

Cons: In this transitional phase of almost being ready for her toddler bed, she sometimes tries to "slide" out of the bed... with her legs between the bars... and then get's stuck.

This is a small con from what I've heard though... she's big/old enough that she can pull herself back up so it's never been a big issue.

Personally... I LOVE her Jenny Lind... I'll use it for all my kids. :)

 That's it... I'm calling Child Protective Services on you...:lookaroun

All the books say NEVER EVER use an old crib. They're just not as safe...

LOL It is a scary thought... especially since they consider the paint, finish and saftey standards... but I'm sure many a child has survived in an old crib.. lol It's the one's that haven't that concerns me. :lookaroun

Mine is a white Jenny lind Convertible crib.......The front comes down and it turns into a toddler bed........

My aunt bought it at Penneys for $400..

Has Maggie EVER slept in it?...NO!!...Is it still in the box?...YES!!..She sleeps in the pack and play in my room...we have a SMALL apt.....

It is beautiful though......

Thanks..:):)

Maggie's going to be in a toddler bed before she ever even uses her crib silly!

The books don't know everything.

One word of advice.... read the books, take what you can, but trust your God given instincts. Woman have successfully been raising children long before all these books were written.

Thank you Rick.

Bunny like Rick said use your common sence. Don't spend a fortune on things some things are just as good cheap. For instance and bottle from Walmart is as good as one from Macys. :lookaroun Maybe differant brands but the same.

I'm just starting to nest... I've just got to get the nursery cleaned out first. There's so much to do, and only so much time on weekends!

I'll get even more specific than that, Jenny... LOL

When we were looking for the necessities... I thought I needed a cradle/bassinet and a pack n play.

Everyone needs the pack n play as it is a lifesaver when sprout get's to be about 4 months+. It helps create a controlld environment that you can feel safe walking away for a minute while they're playing. Not to mention every time you travel you'll have a handy little bed for sprout as well... also in those first weeks when you're healing up - it's nice to plant the pack n play by the sofa so you can rest, watch tv and be out of "bed" and sprout can have his/her own little place to sleep...

Having said that... we decided to use our pack n play as a bassinet/cradle... saving us that additional expense...

HUGE Pros to doing that:

Our pack n play has a diaper changing station right on it... so in for that 4 am feeding when you're half asleep - I was able to just sit up in bed, and change her properly, feed her and put her back to sleep (we're not co-sleep'er kind of people... way too dangerous - but I still wanted her close to me) without ever having to get out of bed... SOOO nice. My best friend didn't do this with her first one... and did with her second - she said the amount of sleep she's gotten has nearly doubled, b/c she didn't have to wake up her entire body walking into the nursery in the middle of the night to use the changing table.

Here's the pack n play we went with:

http://www.toysrus.com/product/inde...&cp=2255986.2256245.2256274&parentPage=family

If you choose to do this though, becareful to not get a pack n play with a "set in" Diaper station... eg: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2373424&cp=2255983.2256188&parentPage=family

Notice how the second one sits down inside the playard instead of resting above it?

Sprout could easily roll under this and that could create a potential room for suffication... so that one's a no no when using it as a bassinet.

But, the above, windsor model sits high above the bassinet and is a permanent part of the unit. My other reasoning for not using the one that sets down inside was that, though I know you can remove it and put it back when you go to change the baby... I didn't like the idea that at 3 am I would be responsible for hooking it on the sides correctly so my baby and the diaper changing thingy didn't fall. That didn't set well with me. I wanted something attatched... that I knew would be stable, when i was less than so.

Ok... this just got really long. LOL

Anyway - I love that we were able to use our pack n play as a bassinet. It created more space, allowed me to get TONS of use out of our pack n play, saved me an additional equipment expense and gave me alot of additional sleep when i needed it most. :)

Hope that helps a little!

it should open another window, then play an add, and then you have to click continue to get to the station. You may have to select a player, which I just use the Windows media that is already on my computer.

I think I may be able to borrow the bassinet - I'm not putting an extra $100 towards a new one - and besides, bassinets are just fancy cardboard boxes really! :lookaroun

I actually found out that carseats expire in 6 years... not because the safety standard are different, but because the plastic degrades after sitting in a hot car for so long. After all the problems we've had, I'm keeping this kiddo safe whenever possible.

I'm definitley a bargain hunter, and not a brand person. But when it comes to safety, that's the big worry. My kid's going to be dressed in wal-mart and Target chic, but I do want a safe carseat and crib.

My SIL put my nephew in his carseat for the first week and it worked like a charm.

We also used our pack-n-play (NEW MODERND ONE) and it was the best thing we bought, used it more than the crib or the basinet.
My wife didn't trust the crib either, and it was her idea to use it.

Of course safety first. I wouldn't want it any other way. But you can drive yourself crazy with all the baby stuff out there.:hammer: :sohappy: for the baby stuff.
