Mission Space Question

For anyone who has ridden, could you tell me about the motion sickness factor of this ride? Both the Orange and Green versions. The times i've been to the World since the ride opened i've avoided it because of sickness concerns.

If you are prone to experiencing nausea on fair rides that spin at high speeds, then you should avoid the more intense version of M:S. My wife has little to no tolerance for such rides, and she easily endures the mellower version of M:S. I have only gone on the intense side, but my wife is a safe indicator of the more tolerable side.

I went on the original version of the ride (don't know what color that is, I haven't ridden since), during the soft open and it made me feel so sick. And I'm usually NOT prone to motion sickness at all. So, ride with caution.

To add to that, a few "dos" and "don'ts."

DON'T close your eyes at any point.

DO keep your head back on the headrest.

DON'T think "spinning."

DO pretend you're actually in a rocket ship and focus on the simulation.

DON'T ride twice in a row.

I followed all the tips, and had never gotten sick on any ride..ever (I love thrill rides), and I was very sick after riding M:S for first time (I also took dramamine one hour before...I did everything I was supposed to and still got sick :o)

I have since been on the non-spinning version (that one's green, right?), without any problem.

So the moral of the story, I guess, is that everyone is different, and I'd recommend trusting your own judgment. If you don't want to sit on the bench in the dressing rooms of Mouse Gear for an hour and a half because the room is spinning (with a tiny fan blowing on your face), maybe try the tame version (not that that's what happened to me or anything :lookaroun).

It's not worth ruining a day or afternoon, imo. If you're not sure, I'd just skip it. Whatever you choose, I hope it works out for you and you have fun :)

My sister and I got very dizzy and nauseous after riding the more intense version and had a touch of vertigo-like symptoms for a couple days afterward. The mild version doesn't affect me at all and I enjoy it every year.

It depends on you. If you know you hate spinning and will get sick very easily I believe green would be the better choice.

It's not as bad as it was when it first opened but it's still pretty rough on the spinning side.

If you can handle spinning you can do it. Just remember don't think of it as spinning and think your really in a spaceship it will ease you and make it more fun. Always look forward and don't close your eye shut.

It's a great ride!:D

I've only done the green version so far, and I'll say it's milder than Star Tours or most other simulators, still fairly fun though.

I think Orange is like a gravitron, which I've liked in the past, but haven't ridden in many years.

Interesting comparison. In a way, it's worse than a Gravitron because you can't see that you're spinning so it's easier to become disoriented. Conversely, it's "easier" than a Gravitron because you don't see the world whizzing around you at all sorts of speed.

Also, you won't fly out and kill yourself:
On August 20, 1991, a Gravitron spun itself apart at the Missouri State Fair.

Obviously not a good idea if these types of rides bother you, but if they don't, try leaning as far forward as possible and slowly rotate your head back to front and side to side.

It's a very interesting feeling.

Fun fact of the day... when you are spinning, you are spinning at the same speed Dumbo rotates at. :ROFLOL:

No joke either!

I went on it for the first time in 2005 and thoroughly enjoyed the ride. However I didn't KNOW it was spinning, I just thought it was a really amazing effect. I do think this makes a difference.

Also about half an hour after I'd ridden I developed a bad headache which spoilt the rest of the day. Of course this may have nothing whatsoever to do with MS but I've never been on it again as I don't want to risk ruining a precious Disney day. I intended this year to try it at the end of the day but didn't get round to it - next year maybe.

I've ridden 269 roller-coasters with no problems, and yet the original (now "orange") spinning version made me pretty dizzy and lightheaded on the 2 or 3 times I rode it (before they invented the "green" version). Like the previous poster said, it gave me a headache as well on at least two seperate occasions. I can't stand Gravitron rides at a fair, and strongly dislike "positive g's", and MS gave me a similar feeling as the spinning, positive g-heavy Gravitrons, so I eventually decided I would just skip Mission Space.

Once they added the "green" version, I was able to begin riding it again with no problems! I can enjoy the story and every other aspect of the simulation without the annoying spinning or positive g's!

PS. One of my pet peeves about the original version of MS, as an "airtime addict", is that while the positive g's of being pressed into your seat are painfully authentic, the so-called "weightlessness" on the ride is really lame! For TRUE negative g's and weightlessness, you would float above your seat! But all they do on MS is stop the spinning and expect that this sudden lack of positive g force will give you that "floating" airtime feeling. Having experienced REAL airtime on numorous other rides, this doesn't come close! (same for Cyberspace Mountain at Disney Quest, which also disapointed me). So with no payoff of REAL airtime, there is no point in me riding the "orange" version! I just go with the "green" version and enjoy the story!

I have only rode the green and it was not bad at all. It was LOTS of fun. Having said that...... I admit to being a :hurl: 'er. Put me in the back seat of the car and ride me around for 20 minutes and I am sick. I don't even attempt cruises. So for me of all people not to be bothered by it, I say it is not bad at all.

My story is pretty much the same as everyone elses.....DD and I rode it for the very 1st time in 08' - I told her it was VERY cool but the next time we rode it later in the day...did the mild version. Didn't even attempt orange last year in 09'....kept it green and I plan on keeping it green. Nope didn't get sick, I just knew it was too much for my body so am keeping it green :)

Here's a tip, don't stuff yourself silly at the Princess Buffet and then immediately ride the intense version. You might end up carrying a bag of vomit soaked clothes around all day like my buddy (I told him to get a locker).

Everyone is different so it's hard to gauge how anyone will react. My mother gets motion sickness very easily. We rode the less intense version and she felt a little queasy, but as soon as we were out in the fresh air, she felt fine and we continued in Epcot. My boyfriend sometimes can't handle spinning rides so we went on the less intense version - he felt fine afterwards and insisted we go on the more intense version right after, and he was fine on that too. So you never know.

Someone earlier on the thread said that keeping focused on the story line and NOT the physical effects (spinning) was a good idea and I agree completely. Don't go on right after you eat, but make sure you've eaten something substantial earlier that day, because otherwise your blood sugar will be low, and that won't be good either.

If there is any doubt in your mind, try getting a fast pass at any point during the day and using it later in the day, right before you are about to leave the park. That way if the worst happens, you won't have ruined an entire day.

Mission: Space is a great ride. I did not feel like I was spinning. You feel like you are being thrust back as your ship is taking off and traveling. The ride is intense. I rode the ride before there was a green or orange choice. I came off the ride a little wobbly, but felt okay. The funny thing was, I went on Space Ship Earth next and the ride got stuck during the burning or Rome and I felt really sick. I still blame Mission: Space.

To me, when I first rode Orange, the thrust feeling lasted forever. But the second time around (two years later) it didn't feel as long, in fact, it just seemed like a second and then it was over.

You got nothing to worry about on Green.

I think its mostly psychological. It is a fairly cramped and unusual experience to most. That being said, there is a "right" way and a "wrong" way to ride it, and if you don't do it the right way you will probably come out sick. Keep your head upright and forward and eyes open.

If you have ever ridden the "Gravitron" spinning spaceship rides (or similar press-you-against the wall spinning rides) at fairs or carnivals, the feeling Mission Space provides is similar.

Green is fairly tame by comparison, and I find it mostly a bore or waste of time. And the intro video irks me so unless I am getting to ride the real thing (which usually takes a good amount of s__________g up to the DW) I usually skip it all together.
