Mission: PaintJob!

I always assumed the yellowish areas of SPACE between the large silver/chrome bands would be painted black or soemthing..

But.. this is new.. Its being painted with a pealescent-metallic color. Sort of metally and all sorts of different colors and hues at the same time. Very stange color, and on top of the yellow and unfinished it looks very strange. Not sure if this is a basecoat for an effect or what it will actually look like.. It just struck me as odd.

Oh yeah, the lounge is covered in big mirror rectangles now and the other small building to the left now has a wireframe "net" over its curved top.

RobFL, you seem to have the inside scoop on stuff.
Do you know when they might "tear that wall down"?
I think it would be neat to be able to walk around Mission Space,
even if there is no ride inside. Do you know if the wall must stay
up until the entire ride mechanism is fully installed and operational or is there a chance of a decor preview once the
outside is finished?

There's going to be a "plaza" area in front, and they're supposed to open that up even before the entire attraction is finished. But, I don't have a date on when that is supposed to happen.

I've thought about this for a while, and i'll preface with this: I don't really know, just making an educated guess.

I think the major working of the ride system are in place. They would of essentially been built into the design of the building itself. So, perhaps the vehicles aren't in place yet, but all of the really big cogs and gears are in place.

The building itself is completed - as in it has four walls so nothing bigger than a buick is going to be getting in without renovation.

Okay, maybe the size of a Double Decker Bus is more accurate, judging from the size of the maintenace doors.

It could still be hollow, but it doubt it. I remember seeing air ducts and such connecting (comming out of the main building) to the lounge area before its walls were finished, if that says anything.

I think the plaza will open when they finish all "dangerous" exterior work. They're still painting, spraying, welding, and such outside. I think in a month or two (max) it will look like the finished product.

A few months ago I read about Mission:Space opening earlier then the given date(2003). I belive the early day was Summer 2002(I couldn't believe the huge leap). Could there be an early release?

This is more than likley the basecoat. Back in March when I was at MK, they had painted the guard rails that lead up to Cinderella Castle the same shiny, pearlescent color, which looked very odd. The next day they were back to their normal grey though, with the "Wet Paint" signs up and the area roped off, so I'm guessing it was the same basecoat.

Oh, and hi everyone!

If it wasn't a basecoat, then it is probably something called Interference Paint, which has microbead crystals and reflects several different colors depending on your angle to the object painted.

I wouldn't be surprised if they used this on the attraction, as it would be a unique touch, appropriate to the theme and the very esoteric design.

Plus it'll look killer anytime, day or night.

I've been hearing similar suggestions. I hope it does preview earlier, I go in November and it would be so awesome if they were testing, here's hoping.

Just a thought...

Journey with Figment opened to CM's and a select few park guests before the paint on the walls had even finished drying.

>>>I am almost certain that this pearlescent color is some sort of primer.<<<

While this is very possible, I worked as a painter for some time, and primers typically are flat, not glossy or pearlescent.

Disney routinely "experiments" with a section of building or wall or fencing to try out a new "look".

It's very possible, especially around Cinderella's Castle, that someone got the idea to give the railings a pearly look, and they tried it out, ultimately deciding it wasn't appropriate, and then painted it over. This happens all the time, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's what happened. The concept art for MISSION:Space indicates a very reflective exterior, and Interference Paint would really work to great advantage here.

Besides that, Disney's been using it (that paint) much more lately, in other parks.

is it at all like the pearlescent primer that was on Cinderella's castle about 2 years ago?

From the photo's I've seen, it looks exactly the same as the color I saw on the castle rails.
