Missing Malaysia Flight 370

One of the strangest incidents in awhile. After keeping up with this story on the news for the past week, it seems to be getting more puzzling as time goes on. There have been some absurd theories on what happened (a meteor? Really?? )

My heart goes out to all the families of missing passengers. I cannot even begin to imagine what they're going through with all these unanswered questions.

What does everybody think about this obscure mystery of Flight 370?

I think that the press has mishandled a lot of this and it pains me to see what they do to the poor families involved. I think that a lot of information has been withheld because countries don't want to admit their strengths (and weaknesses) in security and surveillance capabilities. Hopefully there will be answers soon.

I've often wondered how much of the confusion can be credited to this factor.

The director of the NTSB said that no one is in charge of the search. Each country is just floundering around trying to figure out what happened.

An interesting thing came up early on that I had never thought of. Why don't we have flight data recorders that send data back in real time? The aviation expert that was being interviewed said that this is something that has been discussed, but it's a question of who will pay for it. Not just the cost of the new recorders, but the cost of receiving and storing he data. I wonder if this incident will push the issue on this.

The other problem is every country can make it's own laws on this. We can pass it for planes operating out of the US but it won't make any difference in what other countries do. I doubt smaller countries like Malaysia can afford this.

DH and I were talking about this last night and came to a few conclusions:

1) It was probably not a suicide - that would have happened much earlier if it was going to happen. So...
2.) That probably means a hijacking, but no ransom talk or whatever probably rules that out...unless...
3.) The plane was indeed hijacked and the countries involved are "negotiating" now while leading the press and the public on a wild goose chase out over the Indian Ocean.
or
4.) It was indeed a hijacking, but the plane ran out of fuel before reaching its intended destination.

I don't know that we'll ever know the entire truth, but those families deserve to know.

Hopefully it wasn't hijacked to be used as a weapon later. There has been some speculation of that, and even though I find it more paranoia than probable, you never know in this day & age.
