Mini DVD question...

I will try to import some avchd footage (if I find any) in my sony vegas tonight .. if this works ok I say there is software that can do it :D
and I'm pretty sure avchd capable software is right on the doorstep ;)

Its funny because I did a live chat with Sony and asked about editing with it and all and they seem to give me a grey answer... saying to look into Sony Media Software, Adobe Systems Incorporated, CyberLink Corporation, InterVideo, Inc., Nero AG, Sonic Solutions and or UleadSystems, Inc. for software that is available or that will be in the future with support with AVCHD... that kind of answer makes me think that this AVCHD is not the option I want to take and risk not being able to give copies to friends or family... LOL.

Seems crazy to be able to record in HD but then limited with its use or editing.

ok I tested it ... Sony Vegas could not read those *.m2ts files  but an update is supposed to come out soon

there are very compilicated workarounds but those are just not practical (using windvd as frameserver for a reencde)

so you could either shoot in HD and wait for a way to edit the footage or you shoot in SD

Yea I think Ill go with the SD mode for the most part and maybe pick up a few dvd's for my own personal use to record in HD... since I can use the cam and play it on my HD TV. Hopefully sometime in the near future there will eb support for the .m2ts files.

Thanks for all the help though, very much appreciated... especially when all this is like Greek to me right now. Cant wait to come back and post some nice 6.1MP pics :)

Hey Maxximus, welcome to the format wars. All of us that do video professionally are really bad off in this.
You can buy an HD camera, but there are different types of HD and different types of editing software. None agree to work together because each individual company wants to be the one that comes up with the popular format and make profits.
As newer versions of editing software come out, they support more of these formats, but it takes time for the software companies to keep up with them all.
The best bet for now with any HD footage is to convert it to a standard dvd to watch in SD, and down the road you will still have the HD ones when a standard format is finally chosen.

he already has that camera .. and without a possible way to read those files he just can't convert it

Not to jump off topic here but what the heck is with the dvd's? I picked up the Sony DVD+R DL and it has a RW icon on it... I tested it to see how it looked and wanted to start over so I went to format it but camcorder says formating is not available and in the manual I just read "DVD+R DL cannot be formatted. Replace it with a new one". Why does it have the RW logo then? I thought RW stood for ReWritable? Man I am confused as ever now. I should have just bought the toss away cameras. LOL

what happens to the files when you finalize the dvd? do they become a .vob?

no they stay m2ts .. just finalizing wont make mpeg4 (avchd) to mpeg2(vob) :D

maybe it has no formating program .. try earasing the disc in your pc drive

I couldnt do anything with it on the pc either... so I just took it back and got the +RW's.

Any suggestions on modes, like HQ, SP & LP... is there really any major drawbacks to using say the LP that would give me more recording time. Im guessing I know the answer already... poor quality with LP?

just try it out if the result is pleasing enough for you ..

try recording some calm scenes and some scenes with more movement (like a street with cars) and they review the result and it's quality .. (in all 3 modes)

I want to find out about transfering pictures from my memory stick to cd, now I know they offer the do it yourself computer type Kiosks but it says it will only transfer 170 images and I wanted to find out if the shop itself offers this service and be able to do a larger number of images.

Im just trying to figure out why the limit on the number of images considering the standard cd holds 700mb which even shooting at 6.1MP I could probably get somewhere around 300 images onto that cd.

Edit: I would also like to find out the pricing.

just a quick guess .. but wouldn't some additional memory card be cheaper ? .. I just bought a (normal speed) SD card with 1GB for 8€ (11$) and you can reuse this investment over and over

Well Im planning on TONS of pictures and video... The Pro Duo card I have is 2GB which should hold somewhere in the range of 760 pics, but I want to be aware of my options in the event I actually go CRAZY with pics and be able to transfer them to multiple cds. Im also planning on purchasing 10 5-Pks of mini dvd+rw's as well as a nice bag, 2 extra high end batteries and a dual quick charger.

But as for the pics.... odds are I wont get that many, but in the event I do I want to know if the Kodak shop is able to transfer more then what the Kiosks can. Im always one for better safe then sorry and at least if I do find out they do, I can not worry and if they dont then I can adjust my picture takign habits because of it.

Trust me, we took a ton of pictures and I had the same worries as you about running out of room or running out of mini DVD-R's. But I was sadly mistaken. We ended up with over 350 pictures on our 2GB card (still had room for 1000+ I think my wife said) and I actually came home with unused DVD-R's (and I was filming all the parades and fireworks and other stuff in their entirety - with the double-sided DVD-R's mind you).

Well I guess I need not worry about the pictures but video Im only using the single sided because I want the +RW and there arent any double sided for that yet. I figured for the price of the mini dvd's it made better sense to be able to come home then transfer all the data on to standard dvd's, and from there I can convert to SD to give to family and save the HD for my personal use and then be able to format the mini's to reuse again.

But I would be lying if I said I still wasnt worried a little about pictures, this trip was only possible because of the passing of my father and my mom sending us with insurance money. Im not sure if I will ever be able to go again and beings that I have only been married for 8 yrs and the last time I was @ WDW was a good 10 -12 yrs ago, my wife and 2 step kids have never been there... so pictures taken needs to be upped a notch because of the circumstances.

Its $15.00.

I would suggest running off property and doing it at Walgreens :)

So does iMovie HD work with HDV? If i use one of those nice Sony HDV cameras and shoot it in HDV, can i import it into iMovie HD and make pretty things that way?

On the safe side I called down to the Kodak shop on Main St and was told that they do transfers behind counter of 300 photos per cd for 11.99+tax...

Side note: I just love talking to people down there... makes me feel like Im 9 yrs old and gives me goose bumps hearing them say "Have a Magical Day", LOL... now if I could only make the next 9 weeks go by faster!
