Military/Veteran's Discount vs. Booking on-board Discount

My wife and I had a discussion at supper last night about booking our 2015 cruise (7-night Western) while on-board next month. She wants me to verify that this is the best route versues a military/veteran's discount. I don't even know if Disney offers a discount for veterans (my wife)...

So, which way is the better deal?

Thanks!

I do not know of a military discount that is available that far ahead. Typically, promotions come out much closer to the sail date, but military discounts are always kind of odd. @Disneyfalcon will know for sure. Most of the time, booking onboard and getting the 10% discount is the best deal especially if you are cruising an itinerary that commonly sells out at full price.

Yep, what Richard said. Book using the onboard booking discount first to ensure yourself some amount of savings. Typically Disney only discounts cruises that aren't selling well. If a discount is released for a cruise it oftentimes happens closer to the time of sailing. For instance, the Fantasy cruise I'm booked on for 9/14/13 released a general public guaranteed rate less than 60 days prior to sailing. In the past day or so a DVC members rate came out, too. It's whatever will get the ship numbers up. There's no set pattern as to which sailings will get discounted and what discounts will become available. If you're traveling during an "off" season then your chances would be better. But, there's no telling for sure if a military rate will release, when it will happen, or what type of discount will roll out. If you initially go with the OBB deal you're at least guaranteed to have those savings and onboard credits to spend.

Thanks y'all! That's what I figured, but now I know. Plan to be booking our 3rd cruise in about 31 days for September 2015. Now, what type room...

You are aware that the 2015 cruises aren't out yet? If you want to rebook while onboard, you can always book for any cruise in 2014 and then once the 2015 dates are released transfer your booking to 2015. All the perks will then follow along as well.

Richard is correct, the military discounts don't come out until much closer to sail date. Rebook onboard and ensure you get some kind of savings! :)

Thanks again folks. We'll book a dummy date for our 2015 cruise and move it once the dates open. The Roy Disney Suite, hmmm, have to pass since I still have several years of mortgage to pay... As much as we'd like to have a veranda (especially at the stern) it'll probably be between the large porthole and inside deluxe. Will let y'all know when we get back.

Enjoy your cruises whenever they may be...
