Mickey's Fun House for MK's Storybook Circus (open brainstorming)

With the current rumor of the Runway Railway going in, it makes no sense to me to just abruptly suggest a different, yet similar, idea of my own, no matter how fun it may be to do. It's the same basic idea, just based on the Flash cartoons rather than the old shorts. Besides, I have a feeling that if it were to go in Toontown, it would mostly emphasize Mickey's milestones (i.e., "Steamboat Willie", "The Band Concert", "The Sorcerer's Apprentice", etc.). I also feel that to do black-and-white mostly in this world would be somewhat out of place.

What do you think of that?
While I think that could be interesting I feel like black and white cartoons would be out of place anywhere. But how would you make it work? I think if done right it’d look incredible!

Anyway, here are some of my random ideas, many of which I had already thought of from earlier in the thread (but which are not included in the ride thought of by spacemt354):
  • A car-themed area, based (very loosely) on "Mickey's Service Station", with a jalopy jumping up and down, tires spinning on the wall, and several license plates that form various Disney things (a la the Roger Rabbit ride)
  • A climactic tornado scene, based on "The Band Concert", with the "William Tell Storm" playing in this scene
  • Mickey's house and furniture, like in "Mickey's Orphans" (or rather, the Mickey's House sub-area of the Timeless River area of "KH2")
  • Giant inanimate objects come to life, as in "Thru the Mirror"
  • No Minnie Mouse appearance (as there is in spacemt354's Fun House idea)
  • Mickey and friends speak in archived sound from past shorts (like in "Get a Horse")
Those are just some of my random ideas, but I don't know how to tie them together, much less how to fit them into Storybook Circus. There's really no place for my idea to go, really. It could work on Main Street, like a new Main Street Cinema, but the only logical spot for it is being taken up by the new theater going in. It could replace the Tomorrowland Terrace, but even then, I'm not sure how much space it requires.

Again...these scenes and plot lines are an entirely different attraction than something that would be seen in a circus setting and set within a Fun House -- as you previously requested and as the title of this thread suggests.

If you expected me to be able to include all of this in the Storybook Circus location you wanted, and make it all fit thematically, your demands are way too high.

None of these scenes are related and are vignettes of classic Mickey shorts. This reminds me more of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, which takes several different Pooh stories and blends them into one attraction.

That type of dynamic is completely fine for an attraction, but not for placement in Storybook Circus, which is specifically themed around....the circus setting.

Mickey's Fun House, having an adventure with Mickey being a ring leader, Pete owning the circus, and some of the fab five racing around a fun house trying to stop calamity from ensuing, is something that feels like a Mickey short centered around the circus.

The attraction you are now requesting, would fit better in a Toontown setting, rather than Storybook Circus.

Then you'll say that Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway is basically the same concept...so, again, similar to the Brazil project and Uncle Walt, you are going in circles with the brainstorming and it's hard for anyone to help you when you over-critique your own ideas.

What is stopping you from bringing back a Toontown in another park, and putting your ride there?

In the case of the Magic Kingdom, the lack of physical space. And besides, it would seem rather awkward to have a Goofy-themed ride in the park, but far away from Toontown.

All those backstage areas behind Fantasyland are super-duper important. That's the basic entrance to the Utilidors. I had thought of putting a Toontown, or something like a Toontown, in the area currently occupied, partly, by the Rivers of America, like how the Star Wars land in Disneyland is going in there. But even so, a Toontown doesn't really seem to jell as well with a Frontierland/Liberty Square as with a Fantasyland.

Again...these scenes and plot lines are an entirely different attraction than something that would be seen in a circus setting and set within a Fun House -- as you previously requested and as the title of this thread suggests.

As I have said before, there was a plan for a never-built Dumbo's Circusland to include the kind of ride I'm talking about. I only went with "Fun House", rather than "Mad House", because "Mad" didn't really seem to suit Mickey too well.

I like what you did, I really do. I was thinking maybe we could have a few effects in there, like, say, in the mirror room. I think that seems like a great place to include those kinds of references. If nothing else, there could be a nod to "Thru the Mirror". Adding a few small references here and there seems like a reasonable compromise.

Once more, I thought that Storybook Circus is based on Dumbo's Circusland. That concept called for Mickey's Mad House, which was to have been based on old Mickey shorts. I only replaced "Mad" with "Fun" because I didn't think the name "Mad" didn't seem to suit Mickey well. So, I'm not the first one to come up with the idea of a Mickey shorts ride in an otherwise circus setting. I am simply trying to find ways for abandoned concepts to work. However, they didn't bother to provide much information on Mickey's Mad House, as opposed to Circus Disney.

As for Toontown, there is no room for one in the Magic Kingdom anymore. The shorts concept might also fit on Main Street, but as I said, the coming of the stage show is taking the space away there, too. I could encroach on the Tomorrowland Terrace space, but even so, I don't want it to drift too far from the land.

That's because I want to do things just right. I don't like to get too fictitious. That's why I like to ground my ideas in the real world and try to be as realistic (and also why I avoid getting involved in @MANEATINGWREATH's Disney Dream Resort thread). I over-critique because I want to avoid criticism (either from others or myself), I want to be realistic (I have autism), and I want to keep things from becoming too different from my intentions. In short, I over-critique because, like Walt, I try to be a perfectionist.

However, it's obvious that you don't like it when I go in circles, so what would be a good way to break it?

The only way a Mickey shorts ride might work here now is if the Tomorrowland Terrace and the Plaza Restaurant were removed. Even then, it would still not have as much room as the Fun House concept.

My suggestion is simple ... if you want to make changes to the ride, add more references in...then do it! Nobody is stopping you.

Where is gets a little frustrating is when you keep talking about changes that need to be made in your eyes, but then seemingly wait for me to make the changes to your ride.

I'm glad to help...but not do your project for you. Especially when your views keep changing.

Adding a Toontown to the new Hollywood Studios as part of a Phase 2 expansion -- removing Animation Courtyard, and connecting it to both Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway and Toy Story Land...would be entirely realistic and grant you much more space...given the new direction DHS is going in.

And with rumors of DL's Toontown receiving Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway, it would make sense for the DHS version to also be within a 'Toontown' land.

The thing is, I like to do things realistically. Not to step on anyone's creativity, but I like to be realistic. Maybe no ONE is stopping me, but I like to be realistic, as I said.

This Mickey shorts ride in a circus could work if I just had more information on the Circusland concept, but short of a concept art piece and a brief description about going through a world of B&W Mickey shorts set to ragtime music, that's not a lot to go on.

Does anyone know how much space the Tomorrowland Terrace takes up?

The Runaway Railway is going into the Chinese Theater, replacing the Great Movie Ride. And I'd rather avoid the Studios if at all possible. I hate to say this, but I have a personal bias toward the castle parks (and Epcot).

As we all agreed, both the Runaway Railway and my shorts idea are kind of one and the same, so it would not make sense to have both in the same park.

I want to keep Mickey and the gang more in a castle park than a studio park. I'm sorry, but that's just my personal bias talking.

Oh, and by the way, the Animation Courtyard has already been replaced, by the Star Wars Launch Bay.

I feel like I'm wasting my time, since you refuse to consider anything other than castle parks and Epcot -- so I will leave you with this...

You're free to make any adjustments you need to the 'Fun House' concept, as I've said countless times.

Add your mirror reference, add your jalopy scene, add a tornado, maybe as a finale special effect in the fun house, remove Minnie....do whatever you want but make sure its within this magical 'Fun House' -- as that will keep the attraction 'circus' themed.

Then it fits fine in Storybook Circus, and you don't have to remove valuable restaurants to squeeze it on Main Street.

I'll chime back in once you've made those adjustments to the attraction.

Are the Plaza Restaurant and the Tomorrowland Terrace really that valuable? I'm not asking to be difficult. I'm asking because they both seem relatively out of the way. I know I've never been to either one when I went. Besides, there is space over by the Tomrrowland stage area for a good-size eatery to go. We don't need THAT many restaurants in one area, do we?

The Plaza is a table service, and Tomorrowland Terrace is a quick service known mostly for its fireworks dessert parties. Restaurants are valuable to the Magic Kingdom because it is such a crowded park.

With the new Main Street Theater, adding a dark ride next door seems like it's adding more volume to the area that is already crowded. Not to mention it decreases the number of restaurant options the MK has.

So, again, you are overthinking this placement because as long as you maintain a circus atmosphere through your edits, the attraction is fine in Storybook Circus.

What if the dessert party was moved over to, say, the Crystal Palace? And I didn't even know the Plaza Restaurant was a sit-down place.

Okay, so as per a request from @spacemt354, here are some updates that I would add to the overall concept:

The ride vehicles would now merge the carriage with my jalopy idea. It will look like the Mr. Toad jalopies at WDW, in the last few years of that ride's existence. Imagine this...

...merged with this:
winky-FL-real-car-side.jpg

Here are the scenes for the ride, as typed up by @spacemt354. My additions, wherever they may be, will be bolded:

Scene 1 - Introduction to Mickey and his pals.
He greets the guests and sends you on your way through the Fun House entrance. He pulls on a set of whistles (a homage to "Steamboat Willie"), signaling the ride to begin.

Scene 2 - The Mirror Maze.
Your vehicles meander around odd shaped mirrors as 2.5D projections (tech used in Mickey/Minnie's Runaway Railway) adapts the surroundings to different shaped mirrors and settings as you circle around. Within the mirrors are various giant objects come to life (homage to "Thru the Mirror"), such as giant playing cards, a spinning globe, and dancing gloves and hat, plus some giant sentient musical instruments (a la "Music Land", a Silly Symphony cartoon).

Scene 3 - A Loose Seal!
Donald, performing a stunt with 3 seals (homage to Mickey's Circus), a young pup on some horns and two others in a tank of water, accidentally lets them loose and they crash into a barricade, sending your carriage spinning into the next room.

Scene 4 - A Goofy 'Movie'
You crash into a projection room within the Fun House that is responsible for the special effects throughout the shows. From your crash into the projection room, Goofy, in charge of the special effects, accidentally sets off fireworks and a wind machine that kicks things up into a whirlwind (a homage to "The Band Concert") in the room and you're dazzled and dodging pyrotechnics and wind is blowing in your face as your carriage careens backwards out of the projection room.

Scene 5 - Pete's Surprised Reaction
As the seals break loose, fireworks continue to go off, wind is blowing around, and your vehicle is careening backwards. Pete grabs a hold of Mickey and tells him that he's finished for all this damage he has caused to the Fun House he owns. Soon you hear the bellow of the seals as they pop in and surprise Pete.

Scene 6 - Midway Madness
While Minnie and Pluto where in charge of the midway games portion of the Fun House, Goofy and Donald's previous mishaps have caused the effects in the Midway section to go crazy, with pop out figures coming out of the walls, moving targets spinning out of control, puffs of air coming from above and below ground, all while your vehicle attempts to make it back to the entrance of the 'Fun' House.

Scene 7 - Mickey's Finest Hour
Approaching the finale, Mickey races ahead along with the other fab five members, as they are being chased by Pete and the seals, and a wave of water from the tank (with Goofy attempting to surf it, as in "Hawaiian Holiday"), and closes off the remained of the Fun House from the guests. In a loud bang of a finale, the carriages regain control, and Mickey breathes a sign of relief.

Scene 8 - Unload
Ragtime jazz circus music (sounding like the music heard in "Thru the Mirror") begins to play as you approach the exit to the Fun House. You reappear near the load area, disembark and head back through the main queue building structure and to the Big Top Souvenir. However, on the exit path over to the gift shop, there's a meet and greet with circus Mickey and Minnie, held over from the old Pete's Silly Sideshow M&G attraction.

Those are the updates I was able to do on short notice.

I'm also pondering someone else to voice Minnie Mouse for this ride, rather than Russi Taylor. Over the years, I've done numerous threads about who could voice assume her voice performance.

I hate to be a buzzkill but I am unsure of the long-term viability of Storybook Circus seeing as how we just lost the best known Circus in the world and the imagery and theme will likely disappear from the public consciousness in the coming decades.
