Mickey artwork causing a stir in Poland!

Art is art, but sometimes it seems that artists create something salacious just to do it...not with any deep or thought-provoking meaning.

That sound you hear is Walt rolling in his grave. Okay seriously, why put Mickey's head on a naked woman's body with a Nazi symbol above him? What message does this send. You know, Poland was the first ones to get invaded by Hitler in case anyone doesn't remember. And why lump Disney with Nazis? Honestly, in this day and age we are so far removed from what actually happened in WWII that we truly don't have the respect of what horror actually happened back then.

What I gathered from reading the article is that the "artist" associates Americans with said images portrayed. And like many idiots, believes Walt Disney was a huge anti-Semite.

Since we are commenting on "art" I can express whatever opinion I want.

That artist is a jackass on so many levels... I wish people like that could be escorted to a time machine and time warped back to the center of Berlin during the Nazi reign with copies of their beloved artwork... Let them see how the USA compares to Nazi Germany... bet they would cry about their error then, no?

Despite the uproar, gallery director Maria Czarnecka said she plans to put it back up. "Art should be provocative and controversial," she told The Associated Press, insisting that the poster does not seek to propagate Nazism but instead wants to explore "symbols and how they work."
"The Mickey Mouse head and swastika are on the same level -- they don't mean anything and they are both part of the globalized world," Czarnecka said.

I wonder if Ms. Czarnecka would bravely stand by these same principles that she so boldly proclaims if the symbols behind the body were Muslim, and the head were a representation of the prophet Muhammad. IMO, this so-called art is trash.

And there's nothing artsy about it. Anyone can take 3 pictures off the internet and do a little cut and pasting and have the same thing in 30 seconds. You don't even need photoshop for that s**t.

I am fine with the work's intentions, and as a firm supporter of freedom of speech, the controversial and offensive nature of it as well. However, as pointed out above, it's the laziest looking piece of artwork I've seen in quite some time. It very much looks like a cut-and-paste job. Also, Mickey on his own really doesn't conjure up the idea of Americanism, nor does a naked woman. This was clearly done for attention and not art.

Granted, the art in question was made to illicet a strong reaction, and it worked. How else can you explain an unknown artist from Italy hanging a poster in Poland getting picked up by the radar of Fox news?

Just to point out, art is not defined by the perceived amount of time or crafstmanship involved. There are 7 fundamental elements of art, including, balance and value etc.. Using 3 incredibly strong iconographic images, he was able to encapture his perspective of the American agenda. There are places in the world that find the American government and American society distasteful.

All that being said, not a huge fan of the poster.

The poster, which went up in June in the western city of Poznan just steps from a synagogue, is an Italian artist's take on what he calls the "horrors" of the American lifestyle and is one piece of artwork in a contemporary art exhibition opening in the fall.

The horrors of the American lifestyle? I guess that IS horrendous compared to genocide.
