Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway - Disneyland

Yeah there were some rumors that Disney began to consider a roller coaster for GE after the lackluster response to the land. They lasted two seconds though because then the pandemic hit.
That same rumor suggested that they were also thinking of adding a Mandalorian themed mission to Smugglers Run. I'm all for the coaster, but first they really need to refine Smugglers Run, and it wouldn't hurt if they made the gunner's position more interesting. As for the coaster, my vote goes to a speeder bike attraction. Galaxy's Edge already has two rides that take place in outer space and the speeders could add some of needful kinetics to the land while still including a show scene or two.

imagine how cool it woulda been if they had brought the monorail into GE (in DL) and had it beside the new train tracks. It would have been elevated and ran the entire length of the land, with a station of course. that would have added a lot of kinetic energy to the land as well as a great station to the back of the park.

What happened to all those rumors that they had designed several missions for SR like you get in Star Tours? I remember reading up to six different missions. Sure it may not have been true, but it was so specific, it sounded like they came from a real source at least. Anyway, that seems to be the easiest thing you can do to keep people coming back and not spend a lot of money doing it. And the thing is the SW universe is getting more and more vast you can go many places that has never been touched in Star Tours, which mainly stick with the movies. But with The Clone Wars, Rebels and as said now Mandalorian (and the other ten SW shows coming), there are tons of new locations for fans you can add that have become very popular. Or just make new ones as we have in the ride now.

I thought maybe after the first year they would announce an update to the ride and more missions but it's never been hinted they plan to add more.

Probably all talk, just like Toy Story Mania's ability to be updated too.

It is awesome that Star Tours has received many new scenes though.

First, it was not a rumor. Disney flat out said this and promoted this. They just never implimented it.

But that's what I don't understand. Now that we have Star Tours doing it more frequently it doesn't seem like it's impossible to do for SR. Obviously I get it's a totally different thing because SR is more interactive but it's clearly something they can do. Maybe not 6 missions, but adding a new one every 1-2 years would be exciting. Or maybe they just want to wait a few more years before changing it. Hopefully it won't take 20+ years like Star Tours. ;)

I think they'd be better off replacing the mission that's there now and never bringing it back.

I hope they do something with this ride cause it's a cool idea with a boring mission and poor implementation. I want actual gun turrets and more for engineers to do than hitting flashing buttons.

Piloting is fun though.

OK thank you! I couldn't remember if it was made official or not. But yeah, now I wonder what happened?? I guess like a lot of things with this land, it was probably cut from the budget like the sit down restaurant got.

And I'm OK with the fact that things got cut. GE is probably the most expensive single land Disney has ever built. So yeah, I never had a problem with that per se. It was very ambitious to do in general. And yes, you can always bring this stuff back later. But I think after 1-2 years of opening, some of these ideas should be brought back, especially the multi-mission idea of GE. That's just a no-brainer because you can always keep that ride feeling fresh. That is one the advantage to screen rides now, you can update the environment to whatever you want and promote as something new like they did with Star Tours and Soarin.

Yeah that's another issue, the mission they have now just isn't that great. It's fine and my kids love it, but it would resonate WAY more if they created a new mission in a known location from SW canon. I never had a problem with GE itself being a new location but with SR you have the ability to take people to places they know like Star Tours and that automatically makes it more interesting.

I'm OK with original locations too but known locations are just more fun IMO. This ride was once described as Star Tours on steroids. And it has the potential to be for sure, but it needs to have bigger stakes and more things happening as well.

rode it the first time in Orlando recently (3rd overall)...and I’m done.

but it’s not like I’m a 40 year, hardcore, memorabilia collecting (former) type Star Wars guy or anything😎

I feel they should use official Star Wars areas too. It only makes sense. At least make it exciting and not about grabbing containers.

No idea what happened. They showed art from the other missions too on national tv. Who knows why they never went with it. I thought when Rise opened to get people back on Smuggler's they would release the new missions so both rides were in demand but, nope.

Budget. They had plans for other missions but never made them. Rises budget kept growing and things had to be cut in the land.

Ah like I assumed, budget reasons. But it makes the most sense given the issues ROTR gave them. So it's understandable but I still hope it happens in the future. But GE wasn't even open a full year before it was shut down, so I know there are....issues.

So a new video has been put up by DSNY Newscast about an update on the ride coming to Disneyland. It goes into detail on where the ride is going (possibly having the entrance through the El Capitoon replace City Hall, which is prominently located anyway, and the exit go through the Toontown Five and Dime shop (because most rides now exit through a gift shop)) and how, given the ride building's layout, it may be slightly different than the one in Florida.

It seems pretty fitting for the Toontown area, as the Mickey Mouse show has a bit of a Toontown vibe at times. However, there is something about this ride that bothers me: namely, that the show on which it's based may become real dated real fast. It's quite a while between now and 2023. As far as I know, they have stopped producing the cartoons on TV (since 2019), and I don't even know when/if they're going to do "The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse" again, which is only on Disney Plus anyway, which not everyone has. I hope they do, or people will be confused as to what this version of Mickey is supposed to be.

It may end up being like with Gadget's Go Coaster. People in the '90s may have known the reference, but how many know the reference now? Granted, "Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers" is on Disney Plus (at least I think it is), and I believe they made an appearance on the newer "Duck Tales" series, but even that doesn't last forever, nor, again, does everyone get Disney Plus.

At the very least, this ride will provide those without children something else to do besides the Roger Rabbit ride and, to a lesser degree, Mickey and Minnie's Houses.

This thread is 206 pages long. There wasn't really anything in that video that we haven't already known or talked about over the past two years. Just go back two pages of this thread and you will see my exact same speculation about the entrance and exit to the ride (wouldn't be surprised if that's how he came up with his "idea").

The choice of the style of the Mickey and Friends characters has been talked about over and over since the WDW version came out.

I guess it's a good update for those who don't follow things as closely as a lot of us on these boards though.

Unfortunately, most of the posts here (a reason why the thread has gotten so long) don't really offer much substance, and it's hard to find decent information without getting lost in the chatter.

I haven't really been following closely with that discussion here, especially since this is a very active thread with a lot of chatter. Can you maybe provide an example of what people are saying of the choice of style for Mickey and Friends? Do they agree that there's the danger of it becoming dated?

Some people LOVE the new cartoons and art style, and thus love the choice of utilizing it for this attraction. Some HATE the new cartoons and art style, and do not love the use of it for the attraction.

I personally love the new cartoons, love the art style, and think it's great. I also don't really think it's going to have any issue with becoming dated, no more so then any attraction. Mickey and Friends are iconic, regardless the art style used.

Whether people like the show or not is beside the point (I personally can take the show or leave it). The point I'm making is that they haven't made any new episodes of the show in order to keep it in the public eye. They stopped the original show in 2019, after Russi Taylor's passing, and it seems that "The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse" just kind of came and went.
