Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway - Disneyland

I feel this is an evolution of Fantasyland style dark rides. It is the 2D and 3D elements of Toad and Pinocchio combined into 2.5D with animated projections thrown in there. Pretty cool. Does it need this large scale and be trackless? Absolutely not.

i agree but I’d take the large scale without the trackless.

Imagine if you could tell the cast member running the ride that you want to experience the 1980s version of Snow White's Scary Adventures or the opening day version or the "happy ever after" version and you experience that version.
Better yet, the original, awesome, super scary version of the WDW ride (which was basically 2 solid minutes of the witch trying to kill you over and over again😃)!.

I also think this pushes the bar of what we expect a screen ride to be. Animatronics is pushed to new projection technology. It doesn't need to be trackless, but this is more about capacity. It used to be one car on a track at a time. Multiple trackless cars can enjoy a scene at multiple segments of the scenes. Everyone is watching larger set pieces and more action.

I've heard its not really an issue for riders.
Just because people are enjoying it, (because despite its flaws it’s pretty awesome) doesn’t mean it can’t be tweaked. I am SURE that the Imagineers behind this ride are aware of the issue (the car starting in second position really does get a lesser experience) and that a little reprogramming and other adjustments are in the works. And I bet DL’s version will improve it further.

Regardless, it says something when a ride can open with this issue and STILL provide a great experience... even for the people in Car #2. 😃

Here is my take on the ride. I will keep this brief since this is the Disneyland version of the ride thread. After reviewing many pov ride throughs (yes I know, a you tube video doesn't do a ride total justice but it is enough to form a educated opinion I feel) I have a few thoughts.

OVERALL: To me, the ride is simply delightful. Very nice, family inoffensive dark ride. Vibrant colors, creative scenes and transitions. Love the Daisy AA and the Pluto AA. Reminds me of Cartoon Spin and will make a nice addition to ToonTown. Instant classic? I don't think its on that level but its not horrible. and over time I can see it being a favorite of many.

WHAT DOES NOT WORK: I am not a fan at all of the new character designs of Mickey, Minnie, especially Goofy, etc. Now that is just a minor complaint but it is sooooo distracting in the ride. To me at least. The Daisy and Pluto designs are not too bad and that's why their AA's work the most.

Not all train compartments get the same experience once they break up. some miss sections of the rooms as they enter and leave. Noticed this on several videos. Unlike RISE which tries to make sure everyone has the same experience, the timing is off on this so people miss part of the story.

Mickey does not act like Mickey. I have never seen the new cartoon shorts so have no idea how he acts in them but the Mickey in that ride is NOT the brave and fearless Mickey Mouse I grew up with or have known my whole life. As others have stated, he is very much like Rodger Rabbit or even Homer Simpson like, good intentions but messes up. That is not Mickey. He has this very over top zanyness in this ride that is sooo out of characther. and the voice sounds off. I know different people have voiced Mickey but we know how he is supposed to sound like. just like we know how Kermit the Frog and Bugs Bunny are supposed to sound like and his voice is not right. and its jarring and took me out of the experience.

Minnie is given nothing interesting to do. Her name is on the ride but she is just...kinda there.

Also the STORY MAKES NO SENSE and does not work. So the ride is called MICKEY & MINNIE'S RUNAWAY RAILWAY, but in the ride it's not their railway. It's Goofy's. Mickey is for someone reason in the Goofy role and causes the train to be separated from the train cars.
Then Mickey and Minnie kinda chase us around from cartoon to cartoon but it doesnt seem like they are trying to help us or reconnect us to Goofy but the imagineers use it as an excuse to show off show scenes. Why not reverse the roles? Why not have Mickey and Minnie in the train and have Goofy be in the car and derail everything then Mickey and Minnie chase the broken up compartments through out the different cartoons trying to reconnect us to their main train. and after each show scene the connect a different compartment back to them until the end. have their choo choo follow us around the show scenes. or have goofy's choo choo follow us throughout the show scenes. but no, we get unhooked and we dont see the main train until the end. it should be chasing after us trying to get us back connected.

WHAT WORKS: Figured I would end this on a positive note.
the music works and the theme song is catchy.
the ride has a nice flow. the change at the end from the boiler room to the water is nice. some of nice cameos by other characters.
The colors are gorgeous and overall the ride is fun and relaxing similar to ITS A SMALL WORLD where you can go on it to get off your feet for a while. I welcome it in Disneyland. One very interesting thing happened that I wanted to share. My mom is the biggest Disney fan I know. she loves all of the Fantasyland Dark rides the storybook canal boats, dumbo etc. and her comment after i showed her the ride was "that I would have a hard time getting into it. It seems too kiddie for me" which she has never said ever about a ride at Disneyland. take from that what you will.

Also how do they do that awesome transition where the screen is broken and you can walk through it. i can't figure it out. and its impressive.

This is honestly a pretty solid review on the story of the attraction, especially regarding the character's behaviors and roles. Mickey absolutely should be conducting the train.

Thank you. I put real effort for once into a post. That's what I thought we were going to get - Mickey and Minnie taking us on a train ride and then things get whacky. but we get the reverse of that. they cause the wackyness to ensue and then they just follow us from cartoon to cartoon saying they are going to help us but not really helping us until the boiler room (That seems to be what others are calling it) at the end. The ride still overall works for me very much and its lovely and delightful and cute and gosh darn it, it is soo good to have a Mickey Mouse ride finally but it doesn't feel like the Mickey I know. Compare how he acts here compared to how he acts in Fantasmic and it is night and day. Distracting but still a good ride with nice effects. That "blown movie screen" effect blows my mind and i can't figure out how they do it. that effect blows me more away than all of Rise of the Resistance. and Goofy interacting with the cast member in a Jurassic Park Jon Hammond type of way just made me smile. even though Goofy looks like a crack head.

Funny that you say that, Chris Diamantopoulos's Mickey really reminds me of Jeff Bergman's Bugs Bunny on the Looney Tunes Show. They both give their characters a bit more of an edge than in most other depictions.

Haven't heard his Mickey but his Winnie the Pooh is 100% spot on. they used him to voice winnie the pooh on south park and at first i thought it was jim cummings doing the voice.

I believe they call it Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway as they take ownership of rescuing it. The story centres around them. Very much in the tune of how they name the shorts.
