I do not profess to have any knowledge of the contract dealing with Disny's purchase of Pixar but in my view Pixar is Disney. They can do what ever they want with the characters. Not sure if the same deal exists with Pixar as it does with Marvel and Lucas Film.

The only reason Disney is in using characters is because of preexisting licensing deals. Disney was the preexisting licensing deal that was going to be a thorn in Pixar's side, having the theme park and sequel rights to their films.

Pixar, like Lucasfilm and Marvel, is owned by Disney now thus no contracts would come into play between Disney and these entities. Any agreements between the divsions would just be "Gentelman's Agreement" which upper management could break at any time.

She's a princess if Disney Marketing says she's a princess. ;)

Urm, no. It's Latin for Mary.
Uh, no. Maria, as in Ave Maria, is Latin for Mary. Merida comes from the Latin (through Spanish) Emerita or one who has achieved a high place. Pixar has never said why they have a Scot a Spanish/Latin name.

I think the new look is ok and likely easier to create in real life.

Just found this thread, I started one with a poll, young Merida vs adult Merida, & someone posted about this thread.
I like the younger Merida, my DD seen the new one & she thought that was Merida all grown up, lol!!!, so I told her it was, to explain the difference, she is only 5yrs old, & she noticed the big difference. She asked to see the new movie with the grown up Merida when it came out, LOL!!!!!

I really don't see what the fuss is about. It's not a "new look" so much as she was just translated into 2D from 3D and stylized to match the rest of the art in the current product lines. ALL of the princesses in several of the style guides (that I personally work with btw) have that random glittery treatment to their dresses when none of them look that way in their movies. It's just a marketing thing. Merida looks just fine at her meet&greets in DLR.

I like the picture on the left much more than the one on the right.

(But I don't really care much about Merida, either way.)

If you watch the video, her mannerisms are totally different from the other, more traditional princesses. She just hops off her horse and strolls up to the castle very casually. So at least for now the actual character at the parks is Merida-esque.

I personally don't care about her new look because I couldn't stand that movie (couldn't even finish it) but I would hate for Merida to become a cookie cutter princess.
