Merchandise Shortage

the ship backlog in West Coast ports is still massive and even larger than it was last year.

I was down in Laguna Beach for lunch, then took the toll road home up over the hill to Newport Beach. Once again, from the top of the hill the vast Southern California coastline was full of giant cargo ships just sitting there as far as the eye could see. It's still a creepy sight.

I just got home and checked. Here's an update from yesterday from the Marine Exchange of Southern California that shows the current backlog of ships waiting for the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach is even larger than it was last year when the media freaked out about it.

Currently 105 ships waiting for a berth somewhere, whereas back in November the total was around 80.

The only thing that's changed from months ago is now many more ships are "slow steaming" from their Asian port because they know when they arrive in California there won't be a berth for them in port and there will be a hundred ships waiting in line ahead of them. So they save on fuel by going slower to shorten the days they wait in a port queue.

. But it's still there, and it's still huge.

I'm in MA, and even here the available jobs for CDL drivers are through the roof. Bus drivers, box truck drivers, van deliveries...you name it, if it's got wheels, they're likely hiring for it.

Exactly.

It's just interesting how the media jumped all over this story a few months ago, politicians blustered about it on TV for a week or two, then the media moved on and everyone acts like it all got fixed by some soundbites on TV.

The problem has gotten worse the last few weeks, not better.

One look out at the ocean from a hilltop this afternoon made my mouth drop open and say a naughty word. 🤬

You've always been able to see a few giant cargo ships coming and going between the OC beaches and Catalina Island, but it's never looked like this... a giant parking lot full of the largest megaships on the planet. All just sitting there at a dead stop, stretching out to the horizon.

When we saw that and picked it up we had no idea why this was worth a $100 and anyone would buy it. There was PLENTY
Last week all we saw was AK and DHS versions. MK and Epcot were gone. The Spaceship Earth one is really cute. I'd be tempted to buy at half the price. Definitely not at $100, although apparently others did.

I'm not familiar with it. But if there was a magician performing there, then it's functioning as an attraction. Again, it's not the 60's or 70's. Businesses have "grown up," for better or worse.
The current Disneyland Magic shop is operated by a 3rd party - Houdini’s Magic. They are profitable. They also have several stores in Vegas and one at the Pier in San Francisco.

Great point. I remember that Houdini's group took over the Magic Shop at Disneyland years ago now. Maybe in the late 2000's? Their employees do a fantastic job, and the shop is always full of customers in awe at the magicians behind the counter. Their sales are likely huge.

They've got an autographed photo of Steve Martin on the wall. Steve Martin worked at Disneyland's Magic Shop in the 1960's when he was a teenager living near Disneyland. In the 1960's, many of the stores on Main Street were contracted out to outside companies. Walt set it up that way.

Apologies, had no idea it was the back of the ornament, thought it was plastic and did not know origin. Still would never buy it. :)
You know, I would have likely passed on an original painting of The Scream (Edvard Munch) if it was available for $100. So, never count me as someone that knows art!

Trucking issue will be getting worse soon.

First issue is that of cross border trucking. Currently non fully vaxxed, non US nationals will be denied entry into the US. This will reduce the available truckers.

DEF shortage, this biggest issue nationwide.

There exists a shortage of the precoursers for this product. Without DEF, tractor trailers can move.at only 5mph.

You live by JIT manufacturing, you die by JIT manufacturing. Putting all your eggs in a certain large east asia country is also a problem.

The chickens have come home to roost.

As if the growing backup at the California ports are not bad enough, now there's a problem with the trains taking the cargo eastbound to the rest of the USA once it finally gets unloaded in LA or Long Beach.

In this thread over a month ago I mentioned the ultra-modern railroad Alameda Corridor and its importance in getting cargo out of the megaport and onto trains headed east to the rest of the nation.

Now the rampant crime of Los Angeles has descended on that rail corridor and the massive cargo depots run by the Union Pacific and the Santa Fe railroads. Just a day or less after the cargo is finally unloaded off of cargo ships from Asia.

The LA thieves are raiding many traincars per day, and while this wouldn't be mass shipments headed straight to WDW, it is small shipments headed to small businesses across the country: The shipment of electronic switches needed by a cargo container router in Savannah sending supplies to The Emporium, the shipment of semi chips needed by an electronics company in Alabama contracted to send LED props to the Galactic Starcruiser, the shipment of inkjet needles needed by a textile company in Tampa who prints t-shirts for WDW, etc., etc.

The District Attorney for Los Angeles County classifies these train robberies as "misdemeanors" that are subject to immediate dismissal, by the way. Each individual package stolen is less than the $1,000 limit it now takes in California to steal something and be considered a felony. Los Angeles ended cash bail for misdemeanors two years ago. We are a very, very kind and forgiving state here in California. 😇

But if you are expecting a cargo shipment coming through a Southern California port, it might be awhile...

Or, perhaps you had an Amazon delivery that never showed up this Christmas? It may well have been stolen along the railroad tracks north of the Port of Los Angeles. California thanks you for your business! 😀

I read the bandits that were caught are released after 24hrs in custody! That's crazy.
