May crowd level

Hi,
We are leaving for Disney on Thursday, May 14th. I was wondering how busy the parks are currently. I've never been to Disney this time of year so I don't know what to expect other than very hot weather. What was your past experience at this time of year? Are there lots of foreigners now? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just got back from the Poly (was there last week...week of 5/4). I will post some comments under the Trip Reports thread but, in general, crowds were much heavier this year than I have seen during the first week of May in the past. That being said, lines were managable in all parks. I think TouringPlans numbers for 8s last week in most all parks was inaccurate...it seemed more like 6s.

We were there May 3 - 9... and if those were 8 crowds I'd take them any day!! We were very pleasantly surprised for what I had prepared us for.
I have never been in May before, so nothing to compare it to....

We walked on so many major attractions both with and without fastpass... the parks did feel like they were crowded when walking around... but the attractions were low waits, so what everyone was doing I have no idea. LOL

Even the fairies meet and greet midday on the 4th was a 20 min wait. Everest posted at 15 min standby at 11:00 on the 7th....walk on with fastpass.
We walked right on TOT at 2:30 on the 5th in the standby and immediately walked on RNRC after with a fastpass.
Walked on Soarin on the morning of the 6th with a fastpass, standby posted 40 min.
Honestly first morning Dumbo ride and Ariel's Grotto were our longest waits of the week.

longest line we saw was for Splash on the 8th, posted at 50 min, seemed due to the school groups referred to in an earlier post, but we literally walked on with our fast passes....we also walked on Jungle Cruise, POTC and HM that morning.
Toy Story Mania was a 45 min wait midday on the 5th. We had a 10 min standby wait at park opening and another 10 min in the fastpass line at 12:30.

Our strategy was skipped EMH... either got a fastpass or did major attractions first thing... we were at the parks at opening each day.
Generally Went to parks in the AM that had EMH evening the night before... went to the studios on a non-Fantasmic day.

We got one surprise Fastpass during the week... for Philharmagic...but didn't need it since it ended up being walk on.

Have fun.. hope you find it's the same when you go!

We usually always go the first week in May and it's not very busy however we just got back on May 6 and it was very very hot and very busy. The longest we had to wait was about 55 minutes for a ride and for us that is very unusual since it is not usually busy. I think the buy 4 get 3 free has really boosted the attendance.
Have a great time.

My trip is May 19th-24th...not quite May 25th-on...but I have a feeling it's gonna be pretty busy =(. I hope this is a decent plan so far:

5/19 - Arrive Afternoon DT disney
5/20 - Magic Kingdom
5/21 - Epcot
5/22 - Animal Kingdom -> Hollywood Studios
5/23 - Free Morning - > Magic Kingdom to see fireworks to end our trip
5/24 - Bye bye Disney World =(...My flight is at 1:15 pm, so I have a feeling I won't have much time available to me to do anything else but check out and maybe a good breakfast?

Current Wait Times

We leave day after tomorrow! I found a great new tool for my Blackberry that shows current wait times. It's FREE so I plan to check it out this trip and see how accurate it is. The website is www.coasterq.com and it has all of the WDW parks listed. Looks pretty good at the moment and if this turns out to be accurate it will be a great in-park planning tool!! :sohappy:

Hey there! don't post very often so I thought I would add my two pennies worth to this post. We just got back this weekend after 2 weeks at Pop. 7 May until 21 May.

At beginning of holiday the weather was as they say in the Tiki Room 'hot, hot, hot'. Crowds at this time were definatley busy but very manageable, I mean like MK mid afternoon HM was 10 min, PPF 35 min - you get the picture! We didn't have to wait in line for anything and we did the fastpass shuffle all day long. (I find a good indication of crowd levels is checking out how many strollers are parked up outside Philharmagic and Country Bears).

Towards second week we noticed a definate increase in crowd levels and wait times (I put this down to memorial weekend). However, the thunderstorms and rain soon dampened things down and the parks were near enough empty. On our last day at Epcot 20 May we noticed the park was mad busy. The weather was great in the morning and they were still flooding in through the turnstyle at 11.00! Maelstrom was 20-30 min wait, although this soon changed about 1pm along with the weather.

My advice, don't worry about the crowds! Be fastpass savvy, always have one on the go and you will see everything you want and more! Enjoy your time in the World! :sohappy:

okay just got back from my trip.

may 19-may 24th.

May 19 - Weather - RAINY LIKE CRAZY, just checked in to our resort, and hung out...

May 20th - Magic Kingdom. Morning was overcast with hints of sunshine every now and then crowds pretty light (was able to get fast passes for anything with a return time 40-60 minutes later). Longest wait was maybe 10 minutes for the rides we decided to stand by on. By 3pm though it started pouring down rain (so glad we were wearing crocs and not sneakers), crowds really cleared out, but we left as well considering we did everything we pretty much wanted to do that day, and it gave us ample time for dinner.

May 21 - Epcot - Weather for the day was pretty much overcast with sunshine here and there. A few sprinkles here and there during the day but nothing to warranty whipping out your umbrella or poncho. At night on the other hand (and during illuminations) the rain picked up, nothing crazy like the day before but since you were standing out side waiting to watch illuminations having the poncho on and/or using an umbrella was a good idea. Crowds for the day were medium level to me. Waits throughout the day for Maelstrom were only 10-20 minutes stand by. Test-track and Soarin had waits around 40-60 minutes, but both had fast passes available up until like 6 pm that day. Most of the Soarin return times were within 50-70 minutes, but when we came back at 6 the fast pass return time was like 8 pm.

May 22 - Animal Kingdom day and Hollywood studios at night. Weather @ animal Kingdom was overcast in the morning with some sunshine here and there. But honestly you wanted the overcast because of the humidity in that park it was HOT, sweaty and gross after a while. However by 1-2 pm the thunder storms came...and shutdown expedition everest. =(. So I didn't get to ride it and my fast passes went to waste. Line waits for Kilamanjaro safari was around 30-40 minutes most of the morning. But fast passes easy to grab, kind of silly if you ask me. (i.e. 40 minute stand-by time vs a fast pass return time 40 minutes later...hmmm....)

Hollywood studios that afternoon-evening - Star Wars things for the day was done. weather was overcast some sprinkles here and there. Very light crowds for everything (i.e. 10 minute standby for rockin rollercoaster). Howeveer 60 minute standby time for TOy Story mania and all fast passes gone when we showed up at 5 pm. =(.

May 23rd - We show up at 8:30 a little late for EMH @ hollywood studios. the weather for the day was pretty bright and hot. by 8:30 fast passes for Toy Story mania was already at 11:00 return time, by the time I got to th emachine return time was 11:20. When 11 am rolled around fast pass return time was 6 pm...by noon it was gone. Rockin Rollercoaster fast pass and stand by times remained normal throughout the day 40-60 minute return times, 15-25 min standy by time. The crowd itself was pretty packed and lines for star wars characters larger than I'd like to wait behind. We went to Magic Kingdom that afternoon...hung around..it was definitely a lot more crowded. Still fast passes available, but place was crowded. It started to pour rain around 6 pm. We left and called it a trip.

That night we definitely noticed the crowds were in judging by the lines for dinner at any of the restaurants in our resort while all the days before you probably didnt even need a reservation.

May 24th - Easy morning, quiet again, but we didnt go to any parks...just to the airport. and said our good byes to WDW.
