Did people really think Mario was not going to be massive? Like I get it if you don't play video games, but gaming is one of the biggest industries on the planet. Universal should start pushing planning expansions right away for LA and beef up what the plan to build in FL
It’s possible this movie makes $400M worldwide this weekend alone. And there’s little family competition for months.

And yes, people were very dismissive of Mario/Nintendo’s popularity.

Well video game based movies have traditionally done horrible so I can understand the skepticism. But I think they were wise to make this animated and it feels like they honored a slot of the history of the franchise instead of almost being embarrassed by it. So I’m not surprised.

It also simply looks like a fun family film even if you have no knowledge or attachment to the IP

For many years, sure. Sonic changed that.

This is not simply another video game movie. This is a Mario movie. And like I said before, Mario is as close as anyone will ever get to Mickey
This isn’t the first Mario movie though….

Anyway I’m just pointing out why some people are skeptical. Based on the trailers and just general buzz, I was expecting this to do well.

Universal is definitely getting into the gamer market. I can imagine them hosting huge gaming events in a decade or two. Especially with Mario, Zelda, Pokémon & more getting added in Florida.
