The Mom said:Then she would love to visit us! There's a manatee that's become attracted to the rowers at a local dock. They have to skirt around him/her carefully, because it's illegal to touch them, but it gets right next to them as they're trying to set up.
I've also had them swimming around the dock at our weekend house. It is truly wonderful to see them in the wild, but scary if you're not expecting it!![]()

He did a little spin on his back and we were able to touch him on his belly. He stayed for about 20 seconds and then swam away. That was the only time I ever saw one while swimming, though.
There's Manatee Beach on the same island, and I've heard others have had manatees aproach them there, too.
It's worth a shot. Even if you don't see them, the beaches on the island are nice and usually very quiet.

When did you have your encounter? Was it just recently? What part of the beach?
We have been going there for years & have never seen one yet!
(though I love to play with the Coquinas!)
Been to Manatee Beach, too & haven't seen any...just Snooty at the Parker.

This happened probably 6 or 7 years ago, but I know other people that have seen them along Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key more recently. This was near the end of the island, just a bit before you pass over onto Longboat heading South, and on the Gulf side. It was really one of those great experiences. Luckily I had similar experiences in Hawaii with sea turtles and whales, too. I'm a water hound.
Though they're not plentiful, they're easiest to spot (if they are around) by looking for boat-sized dark spots in the water. Too bad they don't surface as much as dolphins. And it's really too bad that they're endangered.![]()
Hope you get a chance to see one!
