Yes, there is a whole section in The Living Seas on the second level for the manatees :)
This is one of the manatees at The Living Seas

Then she would love to visit us! There's a manatee that's become attracted to the rowers at a local dock. They have to skirt around him/her carefully, because it's illegal to touch them, but it gets right next to them as they're trying to set up.

I've also had them swimming around the dock at our weekend house. It is truly wonderful to see them in the wild, but scary if you're not expecting it!

Mom, um I mean The Mom (not my Mom),

What part of Florida can you go to see the Manatees? We haven't ventured outside of Orlando yet since moving here (except for Grandparent visits in Melbourne and Delray Beach).

My wife things Manatees look like giant potatoes. Frankly they move about as much as a potato does

One of the manatees at the Living Seas is a rescue manatee, has a chunk missing from his tail. They are adorable and I bought a cuddly one and named him Marvin

When I was younger, I adopted a manatee and would give so much money for its food and whatnot. It was a program that only last a year or so and I can't think of the name of it right now or how to get it. I have always loves these "Sea Cows" but have never been able to see one in person (that I can think of). I might have seen one at the Living Seas, not sure though. I went on a mission trip one year to Key West and we went to the Everglades as well (we travelled on US 1) and I always kept an eye out for them. We went on an airboat tour of the everglades and we were told that some manatees might be seen. Unfortunately, I never was able to see one there. I guess I have something else to look forward to on my trip in one month!

I was swimming in Coquina Beach on Anna Maria Island (off Bradenton, south of Tampa Bay) and a wild manatee swam up to me and my cousin. He did a little spin on his back and we were able to touch him on his belly. He stayed for about 20 seconds and then swam away. That was the only time I ever saw one while swimming, though.
There's Manatee Beach on the same island, and I've heard others have had manatees aproach them there, too.

It's worth a shot. Even if you don't see them, the beaches on the island are nice and usually very quiet.

We always go to Coquina Beach! We will be there in just 16 days!
When did you have your encounter? Was it just recently? What part of the beach?
We have been going there for years & have never seen one yet!
(though I love to play with the Coquinas! :D )
Been to Manatee Beach, too & haven't seen any...just Snooty at the Parker.

I love manatees. I am lucky enough to live in an area where the power plant heats up the water so in the winter the Manatees migrate up river to live in the warm water. It's nice to see a family of them coming to the surface when you are out on a day's boating adventure.

I love manatees!! While I enjoy seeing the ones at The Living Seas, the display there really can't compare to the one at Sea World. I usually spend about a half hour at Sea World watching them.

Of course the best thing about them is, compared to them, I feel thin and sexy.

Isn't it a great beach?! I hope you have a blast down here, Tigsmom! The water temps have been near 90 degrees this past week here, just north of there!

This happened probably 6 or 7 years ago, but I know other people that have seen them along Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key more recently. This was near the end of the island, just a bit before you pass over onto Longboat heading South, and on the Gulf side. It was really one of those great experiences. Luckily I had similar experiences in Hawaii with sea turtles and whales, too. I'm a water hound.
Though they're not plentiful, they're easiest to spot (if they are around) by looking for boat-sized dark spots in the water. Too bad they don't surface as much as dolphins. And it's really too bad that they're endangered. :(

Hope you get a chance to see one!

One of my best friends has 20 acres on the Myakka river and when we were kids we would swim in the river summertime and even as late as October or November. This is the same friend who jumps in after gators if you've seen my other posts. In early winter around November the manatees would swim up river and sometimes we would swim among them, I've seen groups of 5-7 including babies and they would swim right up to you and rub you. Anyway now I know it is illegal to contact them but it was a different world back then, I really loved that river years ago. I've seen everything from a Panther, otters, bobcats, manatees, gators, pigs, deer, turkeys, pretty much every animal Florida has to offer while canoeing or swimming up that river, except a bear-always wanted to see one but never happened. He still owns the property but 1/2 a mile away a huge (100's of acres) subdivision is being built and anybody who knows anything about Florida ecology will tell you-things will never be the same.

Thats very cool....if you want to see a bear come to my house. They eat the birdseed right out of the feeders. Last year one hid a deer carcass in my yard to "age" before he ate it. :hurl:
