I've read on a couple of occassions that people are making pymts on their WDW vaca. How are y'all doing this? Is it like a vaca on 'layaway'?

If you book a room only reservation by our website (disneyworld.com):

Your deposit of one night's lodging with tax must be paid at the time of booking. No additional payments can be made prior to arrival. Your final payment is due at Check-In.

Just to clarify, for room-only bookings, you can still make additional payments prior to arrival by telephone (just not on-line).

Just to re-clarify, unfortunately, no you can't. If your reservation begins with R (which means it is an Internet booked room only reservation) then only a first night deposit can be paid in advance, the balance must be paid at the Resort. If a Reservation Cast Member mistakenly takes an additional payment, accounting will refund that payment within 48 hours (it may take up to 14 days to post on your account, and up to 2 billing cycles to be listed on your printed credit card statement.)

This is due to the fact that all online bookings are made through WDPRO a division of the Walt Disney Travel Company (WDTC), and not booked by Central Reservations. Because the rooms booked are not wholesaled to WDTC, they can only hold the deposit. When these reservations are viewed by us at DRC, we see your total package price as one night's lodging, regardless of the length of stay, and need to manually calculate your balance when asked. There are also several limitations to what modifications can be made to these reservations. We can only modify the party information, dates of travel, and room category. If you wish to change marketing offers (rack rate to discount offer, or one discount offer to another discount offer, etc), or change Resorts, a new reservation must be made with a new deposit paid and your existing reservation will be cancelled, with your original deposit refunded. The original deposit money cannot transferred to the new booking. In this case, your reservation number will change and you will now be on a phone booked reservation allowing additional advance payments.

JP ... something is not adding up then, because I know I booked my room-only online and I have since paid it off over the telephone. And my reservation number does not begin with an "R". Could it be because I am part of a Grand Gathering (they gave me a different telephone number to call rather than the regular CRO number)?

Feel free to PM me with your reservation number and I will be able to clarify further.
