Major 2015 Pirates of the Caribbean Refurbishment Watch/Rumor.

It seems like people want a 10 minute ride to tell a story equivalent to the detail in "War and Peace".
One upon a time the citizens of a small town were awakened in the night by a band of murderous thieves. The bandits tortured the mayor, kidnapped and raped all the women (at an auction no less), stole everything they could carry, and then burned the rest to the ground. They were all outrageously drunk and would not stop singing the whole time. Also, Jack Sparrow. The End.

Help me out here, but, wasn't Jack Sparrow supposed to be a pirate or was he just one of the good ones? He is included in the group, no better, no worse morally. So, it isn't "also, Jack Sparrow" it is with another pirate named Jack Sparrow who appears to be a notch ahead of them intellectually. No change of the story at all. They all had the same intent which was to get the riches.

Except that now Jack Sparrow lives happily ever after with his riches. And the towns people wanted him, and only him, to steal those riches.

I rode Pirates several times last time I visited WDW...I saw no mermaids or anything hinting at mermaids except for the singing and the mermaid skeleton (ick, by the way...she's obviously been tortured to death...is it just me, or is that a bit too dark even for the Pirate ride?)

I somewhat agree, but we have another skeleton which was clearly stabbed with a sword also. Still, I think the mermaid skeleton was too odd.

Let me fix that for you:

The bandits tortured the mayor, kidnapped and raped all the women (at an auction no less), stole everything they could carry, and then burned the rest to the ground. They were all outrageously drunk and would not stop singing the whole time. SUDDENLY AND OUT OF NOWHERE, Jack Sparrow!!. The End.

..... Jack Sparrow supposed ..... "also, Jack Sparrow" it is .........named Jack Sparrow who.....

Fix as in make sure the mermaids projections are working? Or fix as in use the original concept for the mermaids in the attraction. Please be the latter.

I am not sure though I would believe its the former, only time will tell and opening is this month so we will see soon.

If ever you doubt the artistic integrity of POTC, remember that Claude Coates and Marc Davis were not just employees of Walt Disney since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but also prolific fine artists outside of the company.

POTC was one of their last projects, and it's one of the densest permanent showcases of their art.

Or am I too making a silk purse out of a sow's ear? ;)

I do hope that someday TDO will redo the battle-at-sea area. MASSIVELY redo it. That could be the showpiece of the ride.
I'm still blown away by this scene every time I ride Pirates (especially when the effects are working properly). I could only imagine what they could do with improvements...

Heading to WDW in 20 days (yay!) but last day is the 24th (boo!). Just in case they open the ride early, what mermaid things should I look for? Only mermaid I know of is the skeleton in the boat.

There is a bend in the path and you will hear the mermaid song (not sure how it goes) and if you look over the side of the boat you could see mermaids swimming (a projection in the water).

In the water beside the boat, if I recall, just before the mist. (I'm not sure of that, it was last January that I saw it)

Thanks! Never noticed any water projections but will definitely look next time I'm there and the ride is open. DH and I like to look for small details we've overlooked in the past.

it's actually just before the beach scene with the mermaid skeleton... a little projection and splash in the water...even when it was first turned on , it didn't look too good. The cavern sequence is actually a pretty long portion of the ride with nothing really happening...they could do so much more...

Are you referring to the rock outcropping that from certain views looks like a skull? I think that's really cool.

That's the one. I don't care one way or the other. It just seemed like an odd thing to include in that addition and a bit of a time cul-de-sac considering they were having trouble getting the mermaids to work.
