News Main Street Electrical Parade and A Christmas Fantasy Parade to return

Christmas parade will be back this year, but rehearsals have not started. MSEP will return next year for its 50th.

So MSEP is off the table to join WDW for its 50th? If MSEP was coming back for the holidays I’d sat they could send it to WDW after the holidays and debut it there for both WDWs 50th and MSEPs 50th, but if its true MSEP will return to DL next year, then that shoots that theory. Question is what is Paint The Nights future?

I think its the most iconic of all Disney parades. can you explain why you feel the way you do about it?

It's just... tired. I loved it, don't get me wrong. I bought a light bulb in '96. I think the soundtrack is fabulous.

But it's lived out its usefulness two decades ago when they brought it back suddenly to try and save DCA in July, 2001 (and failed). It's been chopped down and edited and downsized into a Hits N' Highlights version of the original. Most of the dancers and many characters were all cut out of the production decades ago, as payroll taxes and HR costs skyrocketed and TDA got more and more miserly.

The MSEP in the 2020's is just this stripped down, shortened, downsized shell of its former self, croaking down the parade route on fumes of nostalgia and Disney Parks Blog talking points.

There actually is still imagination left in the world. Paint The Night proves that. The MSEP served its purpose well in the 20th century. This is not its century. It's time to move on. Let it be remembered proudly and fondly, but don't make it embarass itself just because TDA is too cheap for Paint The Night.

These two people no longer live in the White House. There's no reason for Disneyland's Entertainment Department to pretend otherwise.

That said... I do like that dinner jacket President Ford is wearing! Which reminds me I have to get ready for a dinner party... but how jazzy would it be for me to show up in that outfit?! Way overdressed for La Jolla in August, but wow would they talk!

Sit in a warehouse until people forget about it and/or it becomes unsalvageable like Spectro, most likely.

Most logical is they send it to WDW for the Spring or Summer. It would be something else for WDW to promote for the 50th and to use it as a crowd eater for when Tron opens. Nighttime will probably be the more popular time for Tron.

Thank you. That makes more sense now. I didn't know some of the things you said so thank you for the education also. And I bet you would rock in that jacket.

Heck when Disneyland updated MSEP for the Summer of 2009. For some unknown reason, they never brought back the entire Dumbo section (despite Disney already making a new score for the unit).

This year is the 25th Anniversary of that campaign.
Man Disney really went all out on the "Farewell Season" back in 1996.

There were billboards

A special VHS tape dedicated to Main Street Electrical Parade's final year, even an hour long news broadcast!

I even stumbled upon this video which recorded the parade's finale night. Look at how excited guests were during that evening. Heck, in this video you can actually see Mickey leaving the Drum Float to wave goodbye at the numerous floats and characters!

I once came across an old article from a guest who actually attended the final showing. He mentioned at one point, the entire parade paused to a series of applause from guests. After the parade was finished, guests all sung the "Mickey Mouse Club Alma Mater" as a farewell tribute.

Heck, somebody even created a pin counting the amount of times Disney had a "Farewell Tour" for the Main Street Electrical Parade.
MainStreetElectricalParadeFarewellTour.jpg

As of 2021, Disney gave the MSEP a "Farewell Tour" 6 times! Disney can you please finally put the parade out of it's misery.

Here's a better idea, somebody on this site should make an edit of this meme from Jimmy Neutron. But replace Sheen with Mickey Mouse's face and the text saying "Say Farewell (or welcome back) Main Street Electrical Parade" and Ms. Fowl (with the logo of WDWMagic or the Disney Park Community) by saying "Disney this is the 7th time you gave MSEP a "Farewell Tour" (or brought back MSEP).

What DL should have done was built a version of Tokyo’s Dreamlights, keeping MSEP alive in a new way, instead of Paint The Night. Not that Paint The Night is a bad parade but DL just can’t let MSEP go lol.

I agree. If we can't have Paint The Night Parade back anymore, then maybe they should make MSEP into MSEP Dreamlights.

Knowing current Disney and it's cheapness (especially since we're entering the Chapek era), there's no way Disney would even dare attempt to make an East Coast version of "Tokyo Disneyland Electrical Parade Dreamlights". Considering OLC takes very good care of Dreamlights (such as giving the parade a refresh every few years to keep it fresh and updating some of the floats) and their parades in general. I don't see DL and WDW giving two hoots about even going the extra mile as Japan does.

This is the same company that cheapened out on Galaxy's Edge and shortened the length of Seven Dwarf's Mine Train (it was originally going to be much longer).

It has been my understanding that 'Paint The Night' was mothballed because it was very expensive to operate.
This has been talked about in the past, several times, on this very Forum.
A few years ago now, so perhaps things have changed.....but last I was aware :

PTN Parade costs a fortune in payroll and maintenance to operate.
I also recall talk back when it was first shelved that the costumes were in rough shape due to near constant use during Disneyland's 60th Diamond Anniversary.
Also some costume issues, which needed to be addressed.
Disney apparently just came to a point where they felt it was too costly to run, and it's been stored away since.
Thus why you keep seeing the 'less expensive to operate and maintain' Parade.

I love the MSEP, and will to my dying day.
I will never tire of seeing it on any given night.
But TP said it above and has a valid point - it has sadly been down sized over the years due to mishandling and operational reasons.
And the 'updated' recreation of the original soundtrack is annoyingly cheesy.
The original REAL synth soundtrack is far superior.
Perhaps they will switch it back next time out of the gate.

That said, I am pretty sure I will be back to Disneyland next year for my favorite Parade's golden anniversary.
Oh yes....

While I'm a big fan of Paint The Night Parade, but I'm starting to give up hope for PTN to come back. If Main Street Electrical Parade is the only nighttime parade we're going to have, so be it. And I doubt we're going to get a new nighttime parade anytime soon due tthis evil pandemic.
